Yes, a phone can act as a basic detector—but only for changes in magnetic fields. Many phones contain a three-axis magnetometer, the sensor used for compass readings. With a suitable app, it can help you find a nearby magnet or some iron and steel objects. It is not a conventional all-metal detector: it generally will not find gold, silver, copper, or aluminum on their own, and it is not a reliable tool for buried objects or checking wires in a wall.

What your phone is actually detecting

A magnetometer measures the strength and direction of the magnetic field along three axes. Android documentation calls it the geomagnetic-field sensor; Apple exposes magnetometer data through its device-sensor frameworks. The readings are commonly shown in microteslas (µT). Earth’s magnetic field is present even when no nearby object is affecting the sensor, so a nonzero reading is normal. (Android sensor overview; Apple magnetometer data; Google Science Journal guidance)

A compass app interprets magnetic-field information for navigation, using other sensor data as well. A metal-detector app typically displays changes in the magnetometer reading, sometimes adding a graph, sound, color, or alert threshold. A conventional metal detector works differently: it uses a search coil and electromagnetic induction, which lets it detect a broader range of metals.

That difference matters. A phone is best understood as a short-range magnetic-field detector. It may react to ferromagnetic materials such as iron and many kinds of steel, permanent magnets, magnetic clasps, speakers, and some motors. It does not identify a metal’s composition, and an app’s beep or graphic is not proof that an object is made of a particular material.

Check whether your phone supports it

Not every phone has a magnetometer. Android’s sensor documentation tells developers to check whether the magnetic-field sensor is available on a particular device; a model may omit it. Apple documents magnetometer access on supported hardware, but availability can still depend on the device and app. (Android sensor availability; Apple device sensors)

  1. Install a magnetometer, magnetic-field, or metal-detector app from your phone’s app store.
  2. Open it and look for a live reading in µT or microteslas. A three-axis view may show X, Y, and Z readings.
  3. If the app says the magnetic sensor is missing or unavailable, the phone cannot provide this function through software alone.

Choose an app that clearly says it uses the magnetometer and shows numerical readings or a graph. Check its permissions, privacy disclosures, ads, and in-app purchase terms. Be skeptical of claims that the same basic sensor can reliably find gold, buried treasure, radiation, radio-frequency signals, or paranormal activity. A sensor reading is useful evidence only for the quantity the sensor actually measures.

How to use your phone as a basic detector

1. Remove likely sources of interference

Take off magnetic wallet attachments and cases, and move away from magnetic mounts, laptops, speakers, refrigerators, vehicles, steel desks, power strips, and large appliances. Do not rest the phone on metal while scanning. Magnetic accessories can affect compass accuracy, and the phone itself has components and surroundings that can bias its reading. 2. Check or calibrate the compass

On Android, Google’s Maps guidance recommends moving the phone in a figure-eight until the direction beam narrows and points correctly. This can help with magnetometer-based compass behavior, though a detector app may have its own calibration controls. On iPhone, use Compass as a basic check: hold the phone flat and see whether its direction behaves plausibly away from magnetic interference. The exact calibration behavior varies; do not expect every iPhone to show a dedicated calibration button. (Google Maps compass calibration; Apple Compass guidance)

3. Establish a baseline

Hold the phone in the orientation you plan to use and move several feet from obvious magnets and metal. Wait for the reading to settle, note the approximate value, then slowly rotate the phone to see how much the reading changes naturally. The phone measures Earth’s field as well as influences from the device and its surroundings, so there is no universal µT threshold that means “metal detected.” Compare changes against your own stable baseline instead.

4. Test with a known object

Use a small magnet or a steel screw. Start with it away from the phone, then move it slowly toward the phone’s top, bottom, and sides while watching the reading or graph. Move it away and repeat, ideally approaching from another direction. A repeatable change confirms that the app is responding to a magnetic source; it does not tell you the phone’s maximum range or mean it will detect every metal.

5. Scan slowly and repeat

For a nearby cabinet, drawer, or surface, hold the phone at a consistent distance and orientation. Move it slowly in parallel passes. If the reading changes, mark the spot and scan it again from another direction. Keep in mind that the sensor may sit away from the center of the phone, so try bringing different edges close to a known target rather than assuming the whole back responds equally.

What it can detect—and what it cannot

Target What to expect
Permanent magnet Usually a clear response when brought close.
Steel screw, nail, or bracket May be detectable nearby; results depend on size, orientation, distance, and the phone.
Iron object Often detectable if it is close enough to affect the field.
Speaker or motor May produce a response because of magnets or electrical components.
Gold or silver alone Usually not detectable this way; a magnetic clasp or nearby magnetic part could be detected instead.
Aluminum, copper, or brass alone Generally not detectable by a phone magnetometer in ordinary circumstances.
Stainless steel Depends on the alloy and how magnetic it is; some stainless steel is weakly magnetic or nonmagnetic.
Buried coin or other buried object Not a dependable use case. A phone is not a substitute for a dedicated detector.
Live electrical wire A phone might respond to some current or metal fittings, but it is not a safe or reliable wire detector.

“Metal” is not one sensing category for a magnetometer. The app responds to magnetic-field changes, not to metal as a general property. Even a magnetic object can go unnoticed if it is too small, too far away, poorly oriented, or obscured by stronger fields. There is no reliable universal detection distance: performance depends on the object, its position, the phone’s sensor and surroundings, and interference.

How to interpret readings without being misled

  • Look for a repeatable change, not a magic number. Earth’s field varies by location, and phones can have different baseline offsets.
  • Keep orientation steady. Rotating the phone changes how the field is measured along each axis.
  • Compare near and far. A suspected source should cause a change as you approach and recede, and the pattern should repeat.
  • Treat alerts as app features, not standards. Apps may smooth, threshold, or reformat sensor data; a sound or color alert is not independent proof.
  • Do not infer metal type, distance, or size from µT alone. The reading cannot provide a general conversion to those quantities.

Common false readings and fixes

  • The reading changes almost everywhere: Movement, orientation changes, sensor noise, or surrounding equipment may be responsible. Try an open area, keep the phone fixed, and repeat the scan.
  • The reading is high near the case: Remove a magnetic case, MagSafe accessory, wallet, ring, or mount and retest away from other metal.
  • The app does nothing: Confirm that the sensor is supported, then test a known magnet or steel screw. Remove accessories, move to a less cluttered location, and try an app that shows live µT values. If there is still no response, the hardware may not support the feature—or the target may not be magnetic.
  • It reacts near a laptop or speaker: Magnets, motors, and electrical equipment can affect readings. Move the suspected source away and see whether the change follows it.
  • It seems to find a wire: The response could come from a steel fastener, conduit, appliance, or a field from current. A phone reading cannot establish that a wire is safe, live, or located precisely enough to drill near it.

When to use a real tool instead

  • Buried objects or broader metal detection: Use a dedicated metal detector designed for the task.
  • Finding studs or possible wiring in a wall: Use a purpose-built stud finder with suitable modes and follow its instructions. No consumer detector guarantees that an area is safe to drill.
  • Checking for live electricity: Use an appropriate, certified noncontact voltage tester and follow its instructions. Never rely on a phone app for electrical safety.
  • Documenting or measuring magnetic fields: Use a dedicated gaussmeter or professional magnetometer when accuracy and repeatability matter.
  • Checking whether a loose object is magnetic: A small magnet is often a simpler test than an app.

Some apps describe their readings as “EMF,” but a phone magnetometer measures magnetic-field information within the sensor’s capabilities. It is not a general-purpose radio-frequency analyzer, radiation detector, or medical instrument.
