Usually, yes—but not literally everywhere. Current desktop browsers can receive Play/Pause and other hardware media-key events, even when the browser tab is in the background. Whether a key works depends on the operating system, browser, the site’s media player, and which app or tab currently owns the active media session.
What counts as a media key?
Media controls include Play/Pause, Next Track, Previous Track, Stop, seek buttons, and dedicated headset buttons. Volume and mute keys are often handled directly by the operating system. Laptop function-row controls may require holding Fn, or may switch between function keys and media keys through firmware, BIOS, ChromeOS, macOS, or manufacturer settings.

HTML audio/video element or site playerChrome documented desktop hardware-media-key support beginning with Chrome 73. Firefox also documents keyboard and headset controls for web audio and video. The underlying Media Session API lets a page respond to platform controls and provide metadata. The current W3C document remains a Working Draft, and MDN classifies the API as limited availability, so this is broad support rather than a universal guarantee.
Which keys work automatically?

A site can register actions such as:

Browser and platform caveats
- Chrome desktop: hardware media keys are supported, but results still depend on the operating system, active session, and site.
- Firefox desktop: Mozilla documents hardware keyboard and headset control for audio and video on macOS 10.12.1 or later, Windows 8.1 or later, and GTK-based Linux distributions. Its documented behavior does not cover every Web Audio application.
- ChromeOS: the top row can be configured as media keys or conventional function keys; Google documents switching this behavior with the device’s modifier key.
- Edge and Safari: do not assume they are identical to Chrome or that a particular version guarantees hardware-key behavior. Browser, OS, and site differences still apply.
- Mobile browsers: desktop behavior does not transfer directly. Mobile operating systems, lock screens, headsets, and app media sessions use different routing rules.
Why Play/Pause works but Next or Previous does not
This is normal. A browser may automatically connect Play/Pause to an HTML media element while leaving Next, Previous, chapters, queue navigation, ad skipping, and custom controls to the site. Failures are especially common with single-page apps, players built on Web Audio, autoplay-blocked media, or pages that never integrate the Media Session API.
Having an on-page player—or even having navigator.mediaSession available—does not prove that a site has registered useful handlers.

Why the wrong tab or application responds
Media keys are global controls, not automatically “this tab” controls. A browser and operating system choose among registered or currently playing sessions. A paused YouTube tab, another music tab, a second browser, or a native player such as VLC can compete for control. Chrome’s Media Control interface lists media from tabs and can take you back to the source tab. Pausing or closing competing sources usually makes the intended session win, but priority rules vary.

A reliable troubleshooting sequence
- Test outside the browser. Try the keys in a native music or video app. If they fail everywhere, inspect the keyboard, headset, OS, or vendor software first.
- Check the Fn layer. Try the key with and without
Fn. Verify whether the laptop’s top row is in media-key mode. - Use simple media. Play a normal
<audio controls>or<video controls>page. Play/Pause is the useful baseline; Next/Previous may correctly do nothing. - Start playback and remove conflicts. Pause media in other tabs and native applications. In Chrome, open the media-control interface and select the source you want.
- Test the site’s implementation. Check whether the service supports only Play/Pause, also supports seeking, or advertises full track navigation. A custom player may not be wired to media sessions.
- Try a clean environment. Use a private window or a fresh browser profile, disable media-related extensions, and update the browser and operating system.
- Avoid stale flags. Some older Chrome-derived builds exposed a
Hardware Media Key Handlingflag, but experimental flags change or disappear. Treat such advice as version-specific, not a universal fix.

What media keys do not promise
- They do not switch browser tabs or control every native application simultaneously.
- They cannot make a site skip ads or change playlists that have no corresponding player action.
- They do not guarantee control of Web Audio applications that lack Media Session integration.
- They may be intercepted by keyboard firmware, operating-system shortcuts, vendor remappers, extensions, or another active media session.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Media keys are a broadly supported browser feature, not a universal contract. Play/Pause usually works with ordinary web audio and video; Next, Previous, seeking, and cross-app behavior depend on the site, browser, operating system, and active media session.
