The uncanny humanoid robot in the viral footage is Neo Gamma, an early home-robot prototype from Norwegian robotics company 1X Technologies. Its knitted full-body suit, black face panel, and tiny recessed eyes make it look like a walking sweater with a machine underneath.
The robot was shown serving drinks, vacuuming, carrying laundry, cleaning windows, and tidying a home. But that February 2025 promotional video did not prove that Neo Gamma could perform those tasks reliably, independently, or safely in an ordinary household. 1X now markets a later product, NEO Home Robot, with advertised pricing and U.S. deliveries beginning in 2026.
What robot is this?
Neo Gamma is a bipedal humanoid intended to assist with household work. 1X released its home-robot demonstration on February 21, 2025, and the coverage behind the viral headline was published by Futurism on February 24, 2025.
Neo Gamma should not be casually treated as identical to the current NEO product. It appears to represent an earlier prototype or design stage, while 1X’s present consumer offering is called NEO.

Why does it look so strange?
Instead of exposing metal joints and mechanical components, Neo Gamma wears a soft, rounded knitted covering called KnitSuit. Its humanlike proportions and gait are paired with a smooth black face panel and small, recessed eyes.
That combination creates the reaction many viewers had: the body resembles a cozy sweater, while the expressionless face resembles a mask. The design was intended to make a machine feel softer and less threatening around people, but a human-shaped robot without a recognizably human face can be more unsettling than exposed machinery.
1X’s current NEO materials similarly describe a soft exterior, covered joints, cushioning, and a machine-washable nylon suit. Those current claims should not automatically be applied to every Neo Gamma prototype. See the company’s NEO product page for the current design.

What did Neo Gamma do in the video?
The 1X promotional video shows the robot:
- Preparing or serving tea and coffee
- Vacuuming floors
- Carrying laundry and tidying clothes
- Cleaning windows
- Adjusting or hanging a picture
- Collecting groceries
- Moving through a home while people go about their activities
The accurate wording is that the promotional video shows these activities. The footage does not establish long-term reliability, a success rate, independent operation in arbitrary homes, or safe behavior around children, pets, clutter, fragile objects, and unexpected contact.
Was Neo Gamma autonomous?
The available reporting did not establish precisely how much autonomy was used in every scene. A company-produced demonstration can show what a robot was made to appear to do under filmed conditions, but it cannot by itself rule out teleoperation, task preparation, repeated takes, or human intervention.
1X’s current NEO product makes the role of human assistance more explicit. The company says NEO arrives with foundational autonomy, can learn and repeat chores, and can receive scheduled help from a remote 1X Expert for tasks it does not know. It also advertises mobile-app and VR remote control.

That is not necessarily a defect. Remote assistance may help a general-purpose robot cope with unfamiliar situations. But it means the product should not be described as a completely independent robotic servant. Important unanswered questions include when an Expert may connect, whether the operator can see through the robot’s cameras, whether the customer is notified, how sessions are recorded, and what happens when no Expert is available. 1X lists these subjects in its NEO FAQ, but the available page information does not resolve them.

Neo Gamma was not presented as a normal retail product in February 2025. 1X described it as an early step toward internal home testing rather than a generally available consumer appliance.

These are 1X’s advertised commercial terms, not independent confirmation that deliveries have occurred at scale or that the robot performs as promised in ordinary homes.

According to 1X, NEO is designed to accept chores by voice or through a mobile interface, schedule tasks, navigate around a home, self-charge, communicate by voice, learn new capabilities, and use a built-in large language model. The company also advertises remote piloting through its app and VR hardware.
It is useful to separate three categories:
- Advertised functionality: what 1X says NEO is designed to do.
- Demonstrated functionality: what appears in company videos or staged presentations.
- Independently verified functionality: repeatable performance tested by people outside the company.
The supplied material establishes the first two categories, not broad independent validation of the third.

These are manufacturer specifications. “Lift” does not mean the robot can safely carry that weight around a home, and a four-hour runtime will vary with terrain, payload, movement, and task mix. IP44 does not mean the body is waterproof or suitable for outdoor use. Peak compute figures, load-cycle claims, backdrivability, accuracy, and noise ratings also require independent testing before they are treated as real-world performance.
Does a humanoid make household automation better?
Not automatically. A humanlike body can help a robot use furniture, doors, shelves, and tools designed for people. But for one predictable job, a specialized machine may be cheaper and more dependable: a robot vacuum, smart washer, automated lawn tool, or cleaning service can be a better fit than a general-purpose humanoid.
The meaningful test is not whether NEO can perform a chore once. It is whether it can repeat that chore across unfamiliar homes, lighting conditions, rugs, narrow corridors, stairs, clutter, pets, wet floors, and delicate objects without frequent intervention.

Cost over time
Using the advertised $499 monthly subscription:
- One year: $5,988
- Three years: $17,964
- Five years: $29,940
The ownership option is advertised at $20,000 before electricity, maintenance, insurance, service, and possible future software or subscription charges. These figures do not establish which option is better value; warranty limits, service terms, delivery conditions, software policy, and actual chore performance matter just as much.
Practical questions buyers should ask
- How often does a human Expert intervene during normal use?
- Can remote staff view or control the robot inside the home, and is the owner notified?
- What data from cameras, microphones, maps, and household behavior leaves the home?
- How does it behave around children, pets, stairs, glass, knives, hot surfaces, and water?
- What happens during an internet or cloud-service outage?
- Who pays if the robot damages property or injures someone?
- How frequently do the suit, hands, battery, actuators, and sensors need service?
- Does the robot actually cook? The current FAQ raises that question, but the available information does not establish general cooking capability.
The real surprise is not the face
Neo Gamma’s sweater-like appearance made it memorable, but the more consequential development is the shift from a striking prototype video to a priced, deposit-based home-robot product.
That shift still leaves the central questions open: how much work is truly autonomous, how often humans are involved, how safely the machine handles unpredictable homes, and whether its cost is justified over a specialized appliance or human service. Until those questions are answered with independent, repeatable evidence, NEO is best understood as an ambitious early home-robot system—not a proven mechanical housekeeper.
