1. Install and activate Yoast SEO
- Sign in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Plugins → Add Plugin.
- Search for Yoast SEO, choose Install, then choose Activate.
- Continue to Yoast’s First-time configuration.
If you have a ZIP file instead, WordPress supports manual plugin installation by uploading the ZIP through the Plugins area. Follow Yoast’s installation guide for the documented dashboard and ZIP methods. After activation, Yoast’s guide says, “You can now go and configure the plugin.”
2. Complete First-time configuration
Open the Yoast SEO menu in the dashboard and start First-time configuration. Labels and screen layout can vary by WordPress and plugin version, so use the configuration entry shown in your installation if it differs slightly.
Let Yoast optimize its SEO data
SEO data optimization lets Yoast inspect indexable objects on your site. Allow it to finish; Yoast notes that the process can take time on sites with lots of content. Avoid treating a longer run on a large site as proof that the setup has failed. See the configuration guide.

Describe who or what the site represents
Choose whether the site represents a person or an organization and provide the requested identity details. Yoast uses this information in the structured data it generates. Enter accurate, public-facing information rather than selecting an organization simply because it sounds more formal.
Add social profiles and review site basics
Add social profile links if they are relevant to the site. In site basics, review the site name, alternate name, tagline, title separator, and site image. These details help define how the website is identified and represented; use the real name and a suitable image. Yoast documents these fields in its Site basics guide.
Yoast adds settings at more than one level: global settings, and settings associated with posts, pages, and taxonomies. Completing initial setup does not replace checking the settings on an individual page.
3. Use the SEO and readability analysis while editing
Open a post or page in the WordPress editor and find the Yoast panel or sidebar. Its analyses provide editorial feedback on the content you are working on. The precise presentation depends on the editor and plugin version.

Yoast’s SEO analysis can consider use of the keyphrase, internal links, and links to other websites, among other factors. Choose a clear topic or keyphrase that reflects what the page is actually about, then read each suggestion and decide whether it improves the page for its readers.
- Use the subject naturally in the title and copy where it makes sense; do not repeat it mechanically to satisfy an indicator.
- Link to relevant pages on your own site when they help readers continue to useful information.
- Use outbound links when a source or further explanation benefits the reader.
- Keep useful wording and structure even if an automated suggestion would make the page less clear.
Review readability analysis
Readability checks can include transition words, passive voice, sentence length, and word length. Treat these as signals to reread the text, not rigid rules. A passive sentence may be appropriate when the actor is unknown or unimportant; a longer sentence may be clearer when it expresses a careful qualification.
Yoast’s content-analysis guide describes the analysis. Neither an SEO indicator nor a readability indicator establishes that a page will rank, be indexed, or satisfy every reader.
4. Review site-wide features
Go to Yoast SEO → Settings and review Site features. These settings control plugin capabilities across the site, rather than the analysis of only one post.

WordPress also has a built-in sitemap. Yoast recommends its sitemap feature; enabling it disables the default WordPress sitemap and provides the Yoast version. A sitemap helps discovery, but is not a guarantee that a search engine will crawl or index every URL. See Yoast’s Site features documentation.
5. Leave advanced settings alone until you have a reason
Yoast’s Advanced settings cover schema, breadcrumbs, author/date/format archives, special pages, media pages, and RSS. These options can affect how different parts of a site are described or exposed, so change them to fit the site’s structure rather than following a generic checklist.
- Schema: structured descriptions for the site and its content.
- Breadcrumbs: navigation elements that can show a page’s position in the site.
- Archives: controls for author, date, and format archive pages.
- Special and media pages: settings for particular page types and attachment pages.
- RSS: controls for content included in RSS feeds.
Yoast marks crawl optimization as Premium. Internal-link suggestions and IndexNow are also identified as Premium features in the relevant settings. The free plugin still includes the core setup, SEO and readability analyses, and sitemap functions described above. Check the feature label in your own installation before building a workflow around a Premium-only option. See the Advanced settings guide and Site features guide.
6. A practical first-page workflow
- Finish setup: confirm the site identity and let SEO data optimization complete.
- Draft for the reader: write a page that answers a specific question before trying to improve its indicators.
- Open Yoast’s analysis: review keyphrase and link suggestions, applying only those that make the page more useful.
- Read the page aloud or carefully: use readability flags to find wording that needs attention, not to force every sentence into a formula.
- Check relevant site settings: review the sitemap and schema features; leave unfamiliar advanced controls at their defaults until you understand their effect.
- Update and check the published page: confirm the result is readable and the intended content appears. Plugin feedback is not a substitute for checking the page itself.
7. Troubleshooting common setup questions
The configuration takes a long time
Yoast says SEO data optimization may take a while on sites with lots of content. Give the process time to inspect indexable objects. If it appears stuck, consult Yoast’s configuration guide and check whether the dashboard shows a specific alert rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

I cannot find a feature shown in a tutorial
Check Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features and the relevant Advanced settings. Some features, including internal-link suggestions, IndexNow, and crawl optimization, are marked Premium. Tutorial screenshots may also reflect a different plugin version or editor.
The sitemap seems to be missing or different
Review the XML sitemaps feature in Site features. Yoast’s sitemap replaces WordPress’s built-in sitemap when enabled, so do not assume the two should both be present. Consult Yoast’s feature documentation for the expected behavior.
A green indicator is not appearing
Read the specific analysis feedback and inspect the page. Indicators assess selected characteristics; they are not a required ranking score. Do not damage accuracy, natural language, or useful links merely to change a color.
The structured data or search result does not look as expected
Check the person-or-organization choice and the identity details in configuration, then review relevant schema settings. Yoast’s schema settings describe the site and content; they do not promise that a search engine will display a particular rich result.
