Yes—if you want a capable 4K/60Hz home-theater receiver and can buy a tested example at a suitably low price. The discontinued Yamaha RX-A2070 still offers nine amplifier channels, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, YPAO room correction, phono, extensive zone controls, and a broad set of installation connections. Its central drawback is age: it is not a 4K/120Hz or 8K HDMI receiver, so it is a poor choice as the HDMI hub for a current high-refresh gaming system.
What the Yamaha RX-A2070 is
The RX-A2070 is a premium Yamaha AVENTAGE network AV receiver from the 2017-era generation. Yamaha now lists it as discontinued on its U.S. discontinued-product page. That does not erase its usefulness, but it means buyers should evaluate it as a used or remaining-stock component rather than a current model with new-product support and warranty expectations.
Its appeal is broader than movie decoding. Alongside nine internal amplifier channels and 9.2-channel processing, it combines network audio, MusicCast, a phono input, multiple zones, pre-outs, and custom-installation controls. Yamaha’s product overview describes it as a 9.2-channel AVENTAGE receiver.

Unless otherwise indicated, specifications are from Yamaha’s U.S. RX-A2070 specification page. Leave space for ventilation and rear cable bends; the chassis is substantial, and the listed depth does not account for the clearance a cabinet installation may need.

Read the power rating in context
The 140W figure is Yamaha’s full-bandwidth, two-channels-driven rating under the conditions shown above—not a promise of 140 watts to all nine channels simultaneously. Yamaha also lists 220W/channel into 8 ohms at 1kHz and 10% THD with one channel driven, and 220W/channel into 4 ohms at 1kHz and 0.9% THD with one channel driven. Those are different test conditions and should not be compared as if they were the same rating. Actual suitability depends on speaker sensitivity and impedance, listening distance, room, crossover settings, playback level, and how many channels are active.
How many speakers can it run?
The distinction between processing and amplification matters. The RX-A2070 can process a 9.2-channel system and has nine built-in amplifier channels. That is enough for common layouts such as 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 Atmos. It can also be assigned for certain bi-amp or multi-zone arrangements, subject to Yamaha’s amp-assignment rules. The 7.2-channel pre-outs allow connection to external amplification, but do not add power by themselves.
A 7.1.4 layout requires 11 powered speaker channels. The RX-A2070 cannot power that configuration entirely from its own amplifiers; external amplification is needed for the additional channels. Check the RX-A2070/RX-A3070 owner’s manual for the exact speaker and amp-assignment combinations before planning wiring.

The receiver decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, as well as formats including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X are upmixing options for suitable non-native material; they are not the same thing as the original soundtrack’s object-based mix. The manual documents additional decoding and processing modes.
Yamaha’s CINEMA DSP HD3 is a separate reason some listeners choose this receiver. It applies Yamaha sound-field processing, with programs designed to evoke acoustic spaces such as theaters and concert halls. The RX-A2070 specification page lists 24 DSP programs. This can create a more enveloping presentation, but it is a matter of taste: listeners seeking the least-processed presentation may prefer Straight or native decoding. Compare Straight, a surround decoder, and selected CINEMA DSP modes with the same content and level rather than assuming one mode is best for every room or listener.

YPAO setup: useful automation, not a room fix
YPAO-R.S.C. provides multipoint measurement, reflected-sound control, 3D and angle measurement features, YPAO Volume, Adaptive DRC, and precision equalization calculation. It can help set distances, levels, and tonal correction, but it cannot substitute for sensible speaker placement or acoustic treatment.
- Put the supplied YPAO microphone on a stable tripod at seated ear height. Do not hold it during measurement.
- Run the measurement in a quiet room. Start with the primary listening position, then use the manual’s prescribed pattern for multipoint or angle measurement.
- After calibration, inspect detected speaker size, distance, polarity, levels, and crossover results. Correct obviously implausible results rather than accepting every value automatically.
- If YPAO reports wiring or measurement errors, check speaker polarity, microphone placement, background noise, subwoofer settings, and connections, then rerun the process.
- Recalibrate after substantial speaker or furniture changes if the listening results no longer make sense.
Reflective surfaces, a noisy room, incorrect subwoofer level or crossover controls, and listening positions spread too far apart can affect measurements. Use the manual’s setup instructions rather than treating YPAO as equivalent to every newer room-correction system.

HDMI and video: the main reason to pass on it
The RX-A2070 is a 4K/60p-era receiver. It has eight HDMI inputs and two outputs, and Yamaha lists 4K pass-through, 4:4:4 color, HDCP, HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, BT.2020, ARC, and HDMI-CEC. Crutchfield identifies its connections as HDMI 2.0a and also lists 4K/60Hz support. The format ceiling, not the number of HDMI sockets, is the important limitation for a new system.
It is not a modern HDMI 2.1 hub for native 4K/120Hz gaming, 8K video, variable refresh rate, or auto low-latency mode. If a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or gaming PC needs high-refresh video, connect it directly to a compatible television or display, or use an appropriate HDMI 2.1 switch. Audio return through the display may introduce its own format and compatibility limits, so verify the source, TV, and receiver behavior for the audio formats you need. A newer AVR is the simpler choice when high-refresh pass-through is essential.
Yamaha’s published pages are inconsistent about HDCP revision: the U.S. specification page and Crutchfield identify HDCP 2.2, while Yamaha’s discontinued page refers to HDCP 2.3. These claims should not be treated as interchangeable. Confirm the documentation for the exact regional unit rather than relying on a generalized listing.

Yamaha’s specifications list ARC, not eARC. Do not buy the RX-A2070 on the assumption that it will provide modern eARC behavior or reliably return lossless Dolby TrueHD/Atmos audio from a television. For legacy HDMI systems, connecting sources directly to the receiver is often the more straightforward signal path.

Yamaha’s product information includes HDR formats, while launch-era references described some compatibility as arriving through a future firmware update. Treat compatibility as a feature of the receiver’s updated state, not proof that the product had every format at launch. For a particular unit, check its firmware and test the display/source combination you intend to use.
Music, MusicCast, Bluetooth, and vinyl
For music playback, the RX-A2070 includes Wi-Fi, MusicCast, AirPlay, Bluetooth input and output, USB audio, internet radio, and network playback from supported sources. Yamaha lists high-resolution support including DSD at 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz, FLAC/WAV/AIFF up to 192kHz/24-bit, and Apple Lossless up to 96kHz/24-bit on its product overview.
The RX-A2070 remains listed as a supported older-generation MusicCast product in Yamaha’s MusicCast compatibility document, and Yamaha provides MusicCast Controller and AV Controller information on its app and support page. Basic app control, multiroom linking, and individual streaming services are separate capabilities. Service catalogs and authentication can change by region and over time; Yamaha’s compatibility document warns that services may change or be discontinued. Do not assume the receiver has every service or newer MusicCast function found on current Yamaha models.
A phono input is included, so a conventional turntable with phono-level output can connect without a separate phono preamp. Check whether the turntable’s built-in preamp is switched to phono or line as appropriate, attach the ground wire if provided, and note that a moving-coil cartridge may require a specialized preamp.

Zones and custom-installation flexibility
Installation features are a significant strength for a receiver of this age. Yamaha lists powered Zones 2 and 3, a Zone 4 HDMI output, zone audio and video functions, Party Mode, HDMI zone switching, 7.2-channel pre-outs, RS-232C, IR input/output, web-browser control, and two 12V triggers. This can suit a main theater plus other rooms, a projector-and-TV arrangement, or a system that uses external amplification and control equipment.
Zone routing depends on source type and signal format; not every input can necessarily be sent to every zone at the same time. Check the owner’s manual against the actual wiring plan before buying, especially if a specific source must feed a remote room or display.
Firmware, manuals, and support
Yamaha’s support listings show firmware Version 2.87 dated October 4, 2021 for the RX-A1070/RX-A2070/RX-A3070 family and related models. A firmware update cannot add HDMI 2.1 bandwidth or turn the receiver into a 4K/120Hz or 8K platform.
For a used unit, check the installed version and use the update and instructions for the exact model and region from Yamaha’s firmware download listing. Keep power and network connectivity stable during an update; do not use third-party firmware files. The owner’s manual is the reference for setup, amp assignment, and zone restrictions.
Used RX-A2070 buying checklist
Do not judge an older AVR only by whether it turns on. Test the functions your system will depend on, ideally with a return option and enough time to exercise the receiver.

- Try every HDMI input and both HDMI outputs independently with known-good sources and cables; verify 4K/60 HDR pass-through if that is your intended use.
- Play audio through each amplifier channel and check for intermittent dropouts, protection shutdowns, or unusual fan noise.
- Test network connection and MusicCast discovery, plus Bluetooth pairing, AirPlay, or network playback if you plan to use them.
- Check the phono input and grounding if vinyl matters to you.
- Run YPAO and confirm the microphone input works; inspect results for plausible speaker distances and polarity.
- Test remote and front-panel controls, Zone 2/3 outputs, and triggers if your installation needs them.
- Look for heat stress, repair history, relay issues, and evidence of repeated shutdowns.
- Confirm that the remote, YPAO microphone, power cord, and antennas are included where applicable. Missing accessories may make setup harder or add replacement cost.
Older HDMI handshakes can be troublesome with newer displays and sources. If a connection fails, isolate the path: power devices off, disconnect and reconnect HDMI starting with the display, test one source at a time, try a different cable, and temporarily disable advanced HDR or high-refresh settings. A 4K/120Hz source should be routed directly to a compatible display when the receiver is in the way; firmware is not a guaranteed cure for every handshake fault.
RX-A2070 versus current Yamaha options
The right alternative depends on whether the priority is amplifier count or newer video support. The comparison below describes the cited Yamaha/Crutchfield information; retailer prices are time-sensitive snapshots observed in August 2026, not permanent prices or guaranteed availability.

Who should buy the RX-A2070?
- 4K movie watcher: A sensible candidate if the system is capped at 4K/60Hz and the particular used unit passes inspection.
- Atmos enthusiast: Well suited to 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 using its internal amplifiers; 7.1.4 needs external amplification.
- Console or PC gamer with a 120Hz display: Choose a newer HDMI platform or plan direct-to-display video routing; the RX-A2070 is not a 4K/120Hz pass-through receiver.
- Vinyl listener or multiroom user: Its phono input, network features, and powered zones are useful, with streaming-service availability subject to change.
- Custom installer: Pre-outs, triggers, IR, RS-232C, and zone options make it worth considering when their specific routing needs are supported by the manual.
- Buyer wanting warranty and predictable long-term support: A current model is the safer choice because the RX-A2070 is discontinued.
There is no dependable universal used-market price for this model: condition, included accessories, repair history, and return protection vary by listing. Compare the total cost of the specific unit—including any missing remote or microphone, HDMI workaround, external amplifier, and repair risk—with a current receiver before deciding.
