Xiaomi has tested two self-developed humanoid robots at its Beijing electric-vehicle factory. Xiaomi President Lu Weibing said the robots kept pace with the plant’s approximately 76-second vehicle production cycle. But the available evidence describes a limited factory-floor trial—not proof that humanoid robots now perform large-scale, routine car assembly or operate without human supervision.

What Xiaomi actually demonstrated

The reported trial moved Xiaomi’s humanoid-robot work beyond laboratory demonstrations and onto a live EV production line. Two Xiaomi-developed humanoid robots were tested at the company’s Beijing factory, which produces vehicles including the SU7 and is associated with the YU7.

Lu Weibing said the robots could keep up with the factory’s roughly 76-second production cadence. That figure should be treated as a company-reported performance claim, not an independently audited benchmark. It also does not necessarily mean that a robot independently built a complete vehicle every 76 seconds. The robots may have been assigned to a particular station whose work did not slow the line.

Public reporting does not establish the exact station, the number of completed cycles, the robots’ precise tasks, or whether operators intervened between cycles. It also does not identify the production units as Xiaomi’s well-known CyberOne prototype. The available report describes a trial involving two self-developed humanoid robots, not a full production rollout.

A highly automated factory already does most of the work

Xiaomi’s Beijing EV plant was already designed around extensive conventional automation. Robotic arms and other specialized systems handle tasks such as welding, component assembly, transport, and inspection. Xiaomi has also promoted automated and “lights-out” production capabilities, although such descriptions should be attributed to the company and its investor materials.

That context is important: the humanoid robots are an experimental layer added to an established automated manufacturing system. They are not replacing the factory’s principal assembly technology.

Conventional industrial robots remain attractive for stable, high-volume operations because they are fast, precise, and optimized for a narrowly defined task. A dedicated arm, gantry, or fixture can often outperform a humanoid at repetitive work.

Why test a humanoid robot?

The potential advantage of a humanoid form is flexibility. Automotive factories are built around human-sized workspaces, shelves, controls, tools, and walkways. A bipedal robot could theoretically enter those environments without requiring every workstation to be redesigned.

That could make humanoids useful for tasks that are:

  • repetitive, awkward, hazardous, or physically demanding;
  • too variable for dedicated machinery;
  • performed in workspaces designed for people;
  • low-volume or temporary enough that specialized automation is difficult to justify.

However, this is a general manufacturing rationale, not a Xiaomi-confirmed explanation for the trial. A humanoid is not automatically better than a purpose-built machine. It must still deliver reliable manipulation, safe interaction with workers, consistent cycle times, low downtime, and competitive operating costs.

What remains unproven

The trial does not establish that Xiaomi’s humanoid robots are:

  • operating continuously on a 24/7 production schedule;
  • working across multiple assembly stations;
  • fully autonomous;
  • performing complete vehicle assembly;
  • replacing human workers;
  • cheaper or more reliable than conventional automation;
  • responsible for a material share of Xiaomi’s vehicle output.

Important practical details are also unknown. Xiaomi has not publicly disclosed, in the sources available for this report, the robots’ uptime, defect or rework rate, human-intervention rate, charging requirements, maintenance burden, or cost per completed task.

The hardest cases in a factory are not carefully prepared repetitions. A useful production system must recover from dropped or misaligned parts, missing components, changing lighting, sensor occlusion, unexpected obstructions, tool wear, and safety events. It must also connect to line controls, quality systems, traceability software, and emergency-stop infrastructure.

CyberOne is background—not proof of factory deployment

Xiaomi established a robotics laboratory in 2021 and unveiled its full-size humanoid robot CyberOne on August 11, 2022. Xiaomi’s published CyberOne specifications include a height of 177 centimeters, a weight of 52 kilograms, 21 degrees of freedom, and a maximum walking speed of 3.6 km/h.

Those specifications belong to CyberOne and should not be assigned to the robots used in the EV-factory trial. The available reports do not clearly establish that CyberOne itself was the production-line machine, nor do they show that it is commercially available as an ordinary industrial product.

Xiaomi’s robotics background material presents CyberOne as a research and technology demonstration platform. The factory trial is a separate development and should be described on its own terms.

Where AI fits in

Humanoid robots require more than motors and mechanical joints. They need systems for perception, planning, control, manipulation, balance, and recovery from unexpected conditions.

Xiaomi’s 2026 SU7 material describes MiMo-Embodied as a foundation model intended to connect cognition across assisted driving and embodied robotics, allowing knowledge transfer between those areas. That positioning shows how Xiaomi wants to link its vehicle, AI, and robotics businesses.

It does not, by itself, prove that the factory robots achieved a particular autonomy or success rate. Factory integration is a separate challenge: the robot must work within production scheduling, safety rules, inspection processes, and automotive quality requirements.

Why the experiment matters to the EV industry

The significance is not that humanoids have suddenly replaced automotive robots. It is that a major EV manufacturer is testing whether a general-purpose robot can operate under real production constraints: fixed takt times, safety requirements, repeatability, quality control, and limited tolerance for downtime.

China offers a particularly active environment for this experiment because it combines large automotive and electronics supply chains, substantial industrial-robot manufacturing capacity, and a growing humanoid-robot sector. Even so, industry and government-linked coverage describes humanoid commercialization as early, with many applications still at the pilot stage. The broader industry context remains one of staged commercialization rather than proven mass deployment.

The trial can also serve two purposes at once. Operationally, it may help Xiaomi collect data and test flexible automation. Strategically, it reinforces Xiaomi’s ambition to extend beyond smartphones into smart vehicles, embodied AI, and industrial robotics. Promotional value does not make the trial fake; it simply means the demonstration has both technical and business significance.

  1. the exact robot model and production role;
  2. the station or stations covered;
  3. the number of completed cycles and operating hours;
  4. the proportion of autonomous operation versus remote supervision;
  5. uptime, failure, intervention, defect, and rework rates;
  6. charging and maintenance requirements;
  7. comparison with a human worker and conventional automation;
  8. the number of robots formally deployed during normal production;
  9. evidence that the system works across changing parts, variants, and line conditions.

Without those metrics, the Xiaomi announcement demonstrates technical feasibility: humanoid robots can be brought onto an EV production line for a controlled trial. It does not yet demonstrate economic superiority or factory-wide adoption.

The employment question

A single trial cannot establish Xiaomi’s long-term employment policy. Humanoids could supplement workers by handling repetitive or dangerous tasks, or they could eventually reduce demand for some roles if the technology becomes reliable and economical. They could also create new work in robot supervision, maintenance, programming, safety, and quality control.

The practical outcome will depend less on the robot’s appearance than on its measurable performance. If a humanoid requires frequent intervention, moves more slowly than a dedicated machine, or costs substantially more to operate, its role may remain limited. If it can reliably handle variable tasks in existing human-oriented workspaces, it could become a useful complement to fixed automation.

Bottom line

Xiaomi is genuinely testing humanoid robots in an operating electric-car factory, and that is a meaningful step beyond a laboratory demonstration. But the evidence does not show that humanoids now build Xiaomi cars at scale. For now, the robots should be understood as a limited experiment in flexible factory automation operating alongside the conventional machinery that still performs most of the plant’s work.
