For an X link preview using the summary_large_image card, create a landscape image near a 1.91:1 aspect ratio. Current secondary guides recommend either 800×418 pixels for a compact export or 1200×628 pixels for a larger X-oriented master; 1200×630 pixels is a practical general Open Graph master. These are current industry recommendations, not a verified pixel requirement in X’s present official documentation.
Use the large-image card metadata, keep important content away from the edges, publish the image at a public HTTPS URL, and inspect the actual preview before you share the page.
Which X card uses a landscape image?
The dimensions above apply to a URL preview generated when somebody shares a web page on X (formerly Twitter). They do not describe an image uploaded directly to a post, an X profile header, or an image in an article itself.
summary_large_image
This card is the prominent landscape treatment. Set twitter:card to summary_large_image and provide an image through Open Graph and/or Twitter metadata.

summary
The smaller summary card uses a square-style thumbnail presentation. A wide 1.91:1 source is therefore intended for a different layout; changing only the card value will not turn a square card into a large landscape card.
Recommended dimensions compared
| Export | Aspect ratio | Best use | What the guides establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 800×418 px | About 1.91:1 | Compact, X-focused export | PostSize describes this as a practical summary-card size. |
| 1200×628 px | About 1.91:1 | Higher-detail X master | MetaBlast lists it for X; PostSize lists it as a clearer master at the same ratio. |
| 1200×630 px | About 1.90:1 | One reusable Open Graph master | MetaBlast and og-image.org present it as a broadly reusable Open Graph recommendation. |
The two-pixel height difference between 1200×628 and 1200×630 is small enough that the same design normally works for both. None of these references provides a controlled test proving that one pixel dimension always renders better. Exact crops and rendering can also change as X updates its preview system.
Which size should you pick?
- Choose 800×418 when you want a lighter, compact asset and your workflow is primarily X.
- Choose 1200×628 when you want a larger file with more detail while preserving the X-oriented ratio.
- Choose 1200×630 when one image must serve several Open Graph consumers and you want the common general-purpose canvas.
Whatever canvas you select, preserve the landscape shape and preview the finished result. The ratio is more consistently supported by the available guidance than any single pixel count.

Protect the safe area
Keep headlines, faces, logos, product names and other essential details away from every edge. Leave visual breathing room on all sides so a slightly different crop, card width or mobile layout does not remove the information that explains the link.
Use readable type
Text that looks comfortable on a 1200-pixel canvas may be difficult to read when X displays the card at a much smaller width. Prefer one short headline, strong contrast and a simple hierarchy. Do not rely on tiny legal copy or a long paragraph inside the image; put that information in the page title and description instead.
Build at the final ratio
Do not design a square image and stretch it into 1.91:1. Compose the artwork on the final landscape canvas, then export the dimensions you need. If you create both 1200×630 and 1200×628 versions, keep the important elements in the shared central area.

Open Graph versus Twitter/X tags
og:image is the general Open Graph image. MetaBlast’s implementation guidance says X can fall back to og:image when twitter:image is omitted, but supplying the same image explicitly in both places makes the intended asset unambiguous. If you provide og:image:width and og:image:height, make sure the numbers describe the actual file, not the size you intended to export.
Use absolute, public URLs
The image URL should be absolute, use HTTPS, and be reachable by a crawler without a login, cookie, VPN or application session. A relative path such as /images/card.jpg, a URL requiring an authorization header, or a file blocked by robots or a firewall can prevent the image from being fetched.
Match metadata to the canonical page
Set og:url to the URL you expect people to share. Keep the title, description and image specific to that page. If a framework generates tags dynamically, confirm that the values are present in the server-rendered HTML that an unauthenticated crawler receives.
Prepare and publish the image file
Choose a practical format
JPEG, PNG and WebP are common web formats. Use the format that preserves your artwork while keeping the file reasonably light. A photographic card generally compresses well as JPEG; a graphic with flat colors or transparency may benefit from PNG or WebP. Whatever you choose, verify that your host serves the correct content type and does not require an interactive browser challenge.
Keep the image stable
Use a durable URL and avoid replacing the file with a different design while keeping the same path unless you intend to deal with cached versions. If the design changes, a versioned filename such as article-og-1200x630-v2.jpg makes the change easier to reason about.

Confirm the response
Request the image directly and check that the server returns a successful response, the expected content type and the complete file. Redirects are often acceptable, but a redirect to a login page, an HTML error document returned with an image extension, or a server that blocks non-browser user agents can produce a missing preview.
A complete do-it-yourself workflow
- Choose the card. Set the intended presentation to
summary_large_image. - Choose the canvas. Export 800×418, 1200×628 or 1200×630 according to whether you prioritize a compact X asset, a larger X master or cross-platform reuse.
- Compose safely. Keep essential content inside a generous central safe area and check legibility at thumbnail size.
- Export and optimize. Produce a reasonably light JPEG, PNG or WebP and record its actual pixel dimensions.
- Publish publicly. Put the file at an absolute HTTPS URL that can be fetched without authentication.
- Add metadata. Set
og:image, accurate width and height values, and thesummary_large_imagecard. Addtwitter:imageas the same absolute URL if you want an explicit X-specific declaration. - Inspect the rendered HTML. View the page source or server response, not only the values shown in a client-side editor, and confirm that the tags are inside
<head>. - Share a test URL. Preview the result before a campaign, product launch or announcement. Check both desktop and mobile appearances when possible.
Preview the page without relying on your local browser
A screenshot of the page can reveal whether the title, description and surrounding layout look right after the metadata is deployed. It does not guarantee that X will use the same crop, because X generates its own card from fetched metadata, but it is a useful check for broken layouts, overlays and missing assets.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo captures a URL through a website screenshot API, so you can automate a visual check after publishing the page. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and timeouts are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

Caching and refresh behavior
Preview services cache fetched metadata and images. If you changed the image but still see the old card, first confirm that the page source points to the new URL and that the image URL itself serves the new bytes. MetaBlast suggests sharing the page with a changed query parameter to encourage a fresh fetch. Treat that as a troubleshooting suggestion from the guide, not a guaranteed current X control.
Changing the image filename or adding a version identifier is usually clearer than repeatedly editing an unchanged URL. Allow time for caches to expire, and do not judge a new design solely from a preview generated before the change.

Troubleshooting common failures
No image appears
- Cause: The page has no
og:imageor the URL is relative. Fix: add an absolute HTTPS image URL and verify it directly. - Cause: The crawler receives a login page, challenge or denied response. Fix: make the asset publicly fetchable and review firewall, CDN and robots settings.
- Cause: The tags are injected only after JavaScript runs. Fix: emit them in server-rendered HTML or your framework’s metadata mechanism.
The card is square or small
Check that twitter:card is exactly summary_large_image, not summary. A correctly sized image cannot force the large layout when the card type requests the square presentation.
The image is cropped badly
Keep key content farther from the edges, return to the shared 1.91:1 landscape shape and test the actual preview. Do not assume that the entire source canvas will always be visible in every placement.
The old image persists
Inspect the current HTML and image response, then use a versioned filename or the query-parameter refresh suggestion. Cached previews may continue to show an earlier fetch.
Metadata dimensions are wrong
Compare og:image:width and og:image:height with the exported file’s real dimensions. Correct the tags whenever you switch between 800×418, 1200×628 and 1200×630.

For a single article, the differences between these canvases are modest; the more important reliability factors are a reachable URL, valid metadata and a design that survives resizing. Larger images can contain more detail but also produce larger downloads, so compress them without making text unreadable.
If you automate visual checks, cache your own screenshot results when the page has not changed and use a wait condition for pages that render content asynchronously. ScreenshotNeo supports a selectable cache TTL, selector waits, delays and network-idle waits, allowing you to choose between fast checks and a fully settled page. Its billing model charges only clean shots; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits cost nothing, with the response identifying the verdict and whether it was billed.

What the current evidence does—and does not—establish
The available secondary references agree on a landscape image near 1.91:1 and disagree on one universal pixel size. The legacy X developer documentation URL checked for this question redirected to the current developer-platform overview, which did not expose the older card-sizing details. Therefore, 800×418, 1200×628 and 1200×630 should be treated as practical recommendations rather than a confirmed current official X requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an X card image size different from an og:image size?
They describe related but different layers: og:image is the general Open Graph image declaration, while twitter:card selects the X presentation. The same 1.91:1 landscape file can serve both when the card is summary_large_image.
Can I use 1200×630 for X even though some guides say 1200×628?
Yes. Both preserve essentially the same landscape ratio, and current guides treat 1200×630 as a broadly reusable Open Graph canvas while 1200×628 is an X-oriented alternative.
Does setting image width and height guarantee the displayed crop?
No. Those tags describe the source asset. X can resize or crop the preview, so keep important content away from the edges and inspect the rendered card.
Will changing the image URL immediately update every existing X preview?
Not necessarily. Cached metadata and images can remain visible after an update. Verify the new response, use a versioned asset URL when appropriate and allow cache refresh time.
