Verdict: X-plore is still a compelling Android file manager for people who move files among phone storage, removable drives, cloud accounts, PCs, and network servers. Its dual-pane layout makes transfers unusually clear, while its broad toolkit includes archive browsing, USB OTG, SMB, SFTP, cloud connections, and built-in viewers. That breadth comes with a trade-off: the interface is dense, setup can be technical, and Android’s storage restrictions still apply.
This is a current reassessment of the older X-plore review: the app is published by Lonely Cat Games and remains listed on Google Play. As of August 18, 2026, the listing showed 10M+ downloads, a 4.4-star rating, ads and in-app purchases, and an update dated June 2, 2026. Ratings, availability, and purchase options can vary by region and change over time. Check the current Google Play listing.
What X-plore does
X-plore is a file manager built around two visible locations and a hierarchical tree view. You can browse local shared storage and removable media, then use the other pane to open a destination such as another folder, a cloud account, or a network share. The point is not simply that it has many features: it puts source and destination side by side, making file operations easier to follow than in a one-location-at-a-time browser.
That desktop-like approach is most comfortable on a tablet, foldable, Chromebook, or Android TV device. On a small phone, the panes and controls can feel crowded, and you may need to switch between or scroll through locations. The original SitePoint review, published in 2012 and updated in 2024, identified this same usability trade-off. Read the historical review.

How the two-pane workflow works
- Open the folder containing the files in one pane.
- Open the destination folder in the other pane.
- Select one or more items using the app’s selection controls.
- Choose the relevant action: copy, move, delete, rename, share, or archive.
- Confirm the destination and any overwrite prompt, then wait for the operation to finish.
For important data, copy first, check that the destination files open correctly, and only then remove the originals. This is safer than moving files immediately, especially when dealing with large transfers or unfamiliar storage. Avoid moving active application data while the app that uses it is running.
X-plore also handles common maintenance tasks such as creating folders, searching, viewing available file properties, using favorites or shortcuts, and managing hidden-folder visibility. It offers batch rename and a recycle-bin function; how recoverable a deletion is can depend on the location and operation, so do not treat the recycle bin as a substitute for a backup.
Local storage, SD cards, and USB drives
The app can browse shared internal storage, supported microSD cards, and USB storage connected through USB OTG. These are not the same as every directory on an Android device. Shared storage is where ordinary downloads and user files commonly live. App-private directories, protected system locations, and some application-data folders are subject to Android’s permissions and storage rules.

Installing X-plore does not bypass those rules. Access to a removable card or USB drive may require an Android permission prompt, and protected paths such as parts of Android/data or Android/obb may remain restricted depending on the Android version, device maker, and access method. Root access is available only on a device that has already been rooted; X-plore does not root a phone. Rooting itself has security, update, warranty, and data-loss implications.

Do not modify or delete system files just because they are visible. A mistaken operation can break apps or the device. The developer’s feature and support information is at the official X-plore page.
Archives and built-in viewers
X-plore can browse ZIP, RAR, and 7z archives in a folder-like view, and it can create and extract ZIP files. There is an important difference in archive support: the developer documents RAR operations as read-only, so do not expect to edit or recompress RAR contents as if they were ordinary folders. ZIP operations that require recompression can also take longer.
The app includes image viewing and thumbnails, audio and video playback, text and PDF viewing, video-subtitle support, a hex viewer, and a read-only SQLite viewer. The developer says PDF viewing is supported on Android 5 and newer. Built-in playback is convenient, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every codec, container, subtitle, or document. APK files can be inspected as ZIP archives; that does not make an APK safe to install.

Cloud and network connections
The current feature set includes Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, WebDAV and other supported cloud or web-storage services, along with network technologies including SMB/Samba, FTP, FTPS, SFTP, DLNA/UPnP, and SSH shell access. Actual features after connecting depend on the service, authentication method, server settings, permissions, and network. X-plore is a management interface, not cloud storage or a sync service; you need your own provider account, and provider operations are not necessarily identical.

Connect a cloud account
- Open the cloud or web-storage area and select a supported provider.
- Sign in through the provider’s authorization flow where offered, then review the access requested.
- Test with a small file before relying on the connection for an important transfer.
- Remove the connection when you no longer need it, and reauthorize if a token expires or is revoked.
Granting a file manager cloud access can give it access to files covered by the provider’s authorization scope. Connect only accounts you intend to use and remove obsolete connections.
Choose the right file-transfer protocol
Plain FTP is not inherently encrypted. FTPS adds TLS to FTP, while SFTP is a separate protocol carried over SSH; SFTP is not simply another name for FTP over TLS. Prefer an encrypted option when the server supports it, and use strong, unique credentials.
SMB or other network connections may fail even when X-plore supports the protocol. Check that the phone and server are on a reachable network, the server address and credentials are correct, the server permits access, and firewalls or router client-isolation settings are not blocking communication. SMB version compatibility can also matter. Support for a protocol is not a guarantee that every NAS, router, or server configuration will work.

Depending on your setup, you can use X-plore’s Wi-Fi sharing, its browser-based access to the Android device, an SMB/LAN share, FTP/FTPS, or a USB cable with Android’s system file-transfer mode. The available functions are documented by the developer, but menu names and steps can change between versions. Use browser or Wi-Fi access only on a trusted network; stop sharing when finished, and do not expose a temporary file server to an untrusted network.

Vault, app manager, and APK limitations
X-plore offers a Vault for files you choose to protect with a password or fingerprint. It is a feature for selected files, not a complete device-security or backup solution: it does not automatically protect every file on the phone, cloud account, backup, or transfer.
The app manager can list installed apps, show app information, open an app or its Play Store page, and provide options to share, copy, uninstall where Android allows it, or explore an APK. A copied APK is not necessarily a complete backup or a working reinstall package. Many Play Store apps use app bundles and multiple split APKs; the developer documents this limitation in its app-manager guide.

A file manager needs permission to work with files you select. Network browsing and cloud access introduce separate credentials, authorization, and exposure questions. Before connecting a service, consider what it can access, use encrypted protocols where possible, avoid reusing passwords, and remove connections you no longer need. Enabling root access, if your device is rooted, increases the consequences of an incorrect operation.
The developer’s privacy policy, dated January 9, 2025, says the app uses OAuth where possible and does not retain login credentials for those services. It says credentials for services such as FTP that cannot use OAuth are kept in an encrypted private configuration file, and that removing a connection or uninstalling the app removes the associated connection. For Google Drive, the policy describes access to files for app functionality and says Google user data is not sold, disclosed, or otherwise used outside that functionality. These are the developer’s stated practices, not an independent security audit or guarantee.

Google Play’s separate data-safety section reports that the app may collect or share categories including personal information, photos and videos, financial information, and app-performance information. That disclosure and the developer’s policy describe different aspects of data handling; neither supports a blanket claim that the app is either fully private or unsafe. Review both, as well as the permissions and access requested in your own setup.
Is X-plore free?
X-plore is free to install, but it is not accurate to assume every feature is free. Google Play lists ads and in-app purchases, and the developer says some advanced functions require payment through a donation model. Exact amounts and purchase options can vary by country and storefront, so check the current app listing and the developer’s donation information rather than relying on an old price.
Who should use X-plore?
X-plore is a strong fit if you regularly move files between two locations, manage removable drives, connect to a NAS or server, browse archives, or want several storage types in one app. It is also worth considering if you value SFTP/SSH tools, USB OTG, Wi-Fi transfer, an app manager, and built-in viewers—and are willing to learn a busy interface.
It may be a poor fit if you want a minimal, phone-first browser for downloads and photos, dislike ads or optional paid features, or need a guaranteed way into protected Android directories. It is not a cloud-sync service, a full app-backup system, a password manager, or a replacement for a dedicated NAS or server client. The dual-pane design also offers less benefit on a small screen than on a larger display.
Bottom line
X-plore remains an unusually versatile Android file manager, with its clearest advantage being the two-location workflow combined with broad local, cloud, and network support. Choose it if those capabilities solve real file-management tasks and you are comfortable with configuration and Android’s limits. Choose a simpler file browser if you mainly need basic local browsing and sharing. Before using X-plore for sensitive files, remote accounts, or system-level work, check current permissions, connection security, and the access your device actually allows.
