WWDC 2025 began on June 9, as the headline predicted—but Apple did not announce iOS 19 or macOS 16. At its keynote, Apple introduced iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26, shifting its platform names to year-based numbering. The five-day developer conference ran June 9–13, 2025; Apple released the finished software on September 15, 2025.
This is a post-event update to a preview published before the keynote. Its date and broad expectation of major iPhone and Mac software announcements were right; the predicted version names were not.
What the WWDC 2025 preview got right—and wrong
Apple held WWDC25 from June 9 through June 13, with the keynote on June 9. The event combined an in-person keynote at Apple Park with online sessions, developer videos, labs and documentation. WWDC is principally a software and developer conference: consumers watch for operating-system features and device compatibility, while developers look for changes to SDKs, APIs, Xcode, Swift, SwiftUI and Apple’s design tools. It is not ordinarily a major iPhone hardware-launch event.

Before the keynote, iOS 19 and macOS 16 were reasonable predictions based on the previous names—iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia 15—but Apple had not officially confirmed either name. Apple instead aligned its platform numbering with the year of the software cycle: iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26. It also announced iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26 and visionOS 26. What Apple announced for iPhone: iOS 26
Liquid Glass brings a new visual design
iOS 26 introduced Liquid Glass, a translucent design treatment that responds to surrounding content and context. It appears across system controls and navigation, icons, widgets, the Lock Screen, Home Screen and Control Center, as well as supported app interfaces. It is more than a change to wallpaper or icons: Apple also introduced design tools and APIs for developers to adapt their apps. Apple Intelligence additions have device and availability limits
Apple announced Live Translation for Messages, FaceTime and Phone; expanded visual intelligence that can work with material displayed on an iPhone screen; and new image- and text-generation experiences. Visual intelligence can also connect to ChatGPT for supported tasks. Apple described a mix of on-device processing and other processing paths, so “Apple Intelligence” should not be taken to mean every request is handled only on the device.

Eligibility depends on hardware, and features can also depend on language, region and local rules. Apple listed the detailed iPhone Apple Intelligence features for all iPhone 16 models and the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max—not the iPhone 15 or every phone that can install iOS 26. Apple’s iOS 26 announcement describes the features and stated limitations.
Communication, apps and everyday features
iOS 26 added call-screening and call-management tools intended to reduce unwanted interruptions, plus Messages improvements such as polls and better handling of unknown senders. Apple also announced safety and child-account changes, including communication limits and parental approvals. The experience of call screening and related services may vary by country, carrier, language or regional edition.
Other announced changes included an Apple Games app; CarPlay updates; Apple Music features such as AutoMix and lyric-related improvements; Maps features including preferred routes and visited places; and Wallet enhancements such as richer boarding-pass information and order tracking. Apple also highlighted Safari privacy improvements, Accessibility Reader and Braille Access. Some recording and camera-remote features involving AirPods require compatible AirPods hardware. What Apple announced for Mac: macOS Tahoe 26
macOS Tahoe 26—named after Lake Tahoe—received the Liquid Glass redesign and a closer visual relationship with Apple’s other platforms. Apple also announced desktop and Dock customisation, Spotlight improvements, closer integration with Apple services and iPhone experiences, Shortcuts updates, Apple Intelligence features where supported, and new developer-facing design APIs and frameworks. The keynote preview was not a guarantee that every announced capability would be available immediately to every Mac owner.

A particularly important detail for Intel Mac owners: macOS Tahoe is the final major macOS release for Intel Macs. That does not mean an Intel Mac stopped working when Tahoe arrived. It means owners should factor the cutoff into future software and hardware planning. The announcement alone does not establish how long a particular Mac will receive security updates or how long individual apps will support it. Apple discussed the platform and developer changes in its Platforms State of the Union.
Apple Intelligence on Mac requires an Apple silicon Mac with M1 or later, subject to feature, language and region limits. That requirement is separate from whether a particular Mac can install macOS Tahoe: install compatibility does not confer access to every AI feature.

Compatibility: installation is not the same as feature access
Apple said iOS 26 supports iPhone 11 and later. That is the general operating-system compatibility line, not a promise of identical features on every supported phone. In particular, Apple Intelligence has stricter iPhone hardware requirements.

For a particular device, check Apple’s full iOS 26 compatibility and feature information or macOS Tahoe announcement. Hardware eligibility is only one part of Apple Intelligence availability. Language settings, location and local regulation can also matter, and some features may arrive later or differ by region.

- July 2025: Apple said public betas would follow in July.
- September 15, 2025: Apple made the finished major platform updates available as free software updates.
The developer beta is for people building and testing software; a public beta is not the same as a finished release. Beta software can contain bugs, drain battery faster, affect performance, or disrupt apps and accessories. If you need a device for work, banking, travel, accessibility, health or emergency communication, waiting for a stable release is the safer choice. Developers or experienced testers with spare hardware should back up first and have a recovery plan. A backup should be verified, not merely assumed.

To explore Apple’s beta options, see the Apple Developer Program for developer resources and the Apple Beta Software Program for public testing. Ordinary users do not need a paid developer membership just to try a public beta.
What users should take from the announcement
- If your current iPhone meets your needs: iOS 26 compatibility alone is not a reason to buy a new phone. Consider new hardware only if you need features your model cannot run or your device no longer meets your performance or support needs.
- If you own an Intel Mac: Tahoe’s status as the final major macOS release makes it sensible to plan ahead, but not necessarily to replace a working Mac immediately. Consider the apps you rely on, expected OS needs, performance, battery, ports and external displays, memory and storage, and repair or replacement costs.
- If Apple Intelligence is your reason to upgrade: Check your exact model, language and region before spending money. An operating-system update or a beta install cannot remove the hardware requirements.
- If you are considering a beta: Weigh early access against reliability, and do not use your only essential device unless you can tolerate problems and recover from them.
What was not established by this software announcement
The WWDC keynote was focused on software platforms and developer tools. Treat hardware rumors or claims about unannounced products as speculation unless Apple separately confirms them. Similarly, a keynote feature announcement does not necessarily mean the feature was ready for every user on June 9: developer testing started then, public testing followed, and final updates arrived in September.
