For most new sites that need control, customization, and room to grow, self-hosted WordPress.org is the stronger long-term choice. Weebly can be the better fit when you want a hosted, drag-and-drop setup and have modest requirements. The right answer depends on your site’s size, technical tolerance, publishing goals, and commerce needs.

This comparison means self-hosted WordPress.org—the open-source software installed on a web host—not WordPress.com, which is a separate hosted service run by Automattic.

WordPress.org and Weebly are different kinds of products

Weebly is a hosted website builder: the service supplies the editor and hosting, so you work inside its platform. WordPress.org is free, open-source publishing software that you install on a hosting account. You choose the host and remain responsible for more of the technical operation.

WordPress.org describes itself as “the free, Open Source web publishing software project, owned by no one individual or company.” That does not mean a WordPress site has no costs; hosting, a domain, optional extensions, and maintenance can all cost money.

Quick comparison

Consideration Self-hosted WordPress.org Weebly
Hosting You select and pay a hosting provider; hosting may be managed or unmanaged. Included as part of the hosted service.
Initial setup Requires a domain and hosting setup, followed by WordPress installation and configuration. Generally a simpler, drag-and-drop start for a straightforward site.
Customization Themes, plugins, publishing controls, user roles, and access to your site data support extensive adaptation. Uses the tools and integrations supported by the platform; suitability depends on the exact current requirement.
Maintenance You or your host must handle updates, backups, security, and troubleshooting to the extent your service does not cover them. The provider handles the underlying hosting environment, reducing routine infrastructure work.
Software price The WordPress software has no license fee. Free and paid offers exist, but current plan amounts and limits should be checked on Weebly’s official pricing pages.
Long-term portability Generally offers more control over files, database, hosting choice, and migration options. Migration and export options should be tested against your specific content before you commit.

When self-hosted WordPress is the better choice

You need a site that can evolve

WordPress separates its core publishing system from themes and plugins. That makes it practical for blogs, documentation, membership features, editorial workflows, service businesses, and other projects whose requirements may change. The same flexibility creates more decisions: extensions must be selected, updated, secured, and occasionally replaced.

Control and ownership matter

With a suitable host, you control the installation, site data, database, theme files, and hosting relationship. That can make redesigns, integrations, and migrations easier than moving between a closed builder’s supported options. Portability is not automatic, however: keep current backups and test an export or migration rather than assuming every component will transfer perfectly.

You can accept technical responsibility—or pay someone to manage it

WordPress.org currently recommends PHP 8.3 or later, MariaDB 10.11 or later or MySQL 8.0 or later, HTTPS, and Apache or Nginx. Older PHP and MySQL versions used by legacy environments are end-of-life and can expose sites to security vulnerabilities. A managed WordPress host may perform some updates, backups, and security work, but you must verify exactly what is included.

When Weebly may be the better choice

You want the shortest path to a modest site

A hosted editor can remove decisions about server software, installation, and much of the underlying maintenance. For a small brochure site, personal page, or simple store whose requirements fit the platform, that convenience may outweigh WordPress’s greater flexibility.

You prefer a constrained set of choices

Weebly’s hosted model can be easier to operate when you do not want to compare hosts, plugins, themes, update schedules, or security tools. “Easier” is situational: a complex site can still require substantial configuration, while a managed WordPress host can simplify WordPress considerably.

Your required features are already supported

Check the current Weebly editor, apps, content limits, checkout features, payment options, export behavior, and support terms against a written requirements list. The available evidence does not establish a universal feature or ecommerce winner, and Weebly’s detailed current plan terms need direct confirmation.

Cost: compare the whole operating cost

WordPress’s software is free, but a realistic budget can include a domain, hosting, premium themes or plugins, paid support, backups, security services, and maintenance. A low-cost host may leave more work to you; a managed host may cost more while covering more routine tasks.

Weebly offers free and paid plans, but plan prices, introductory versus renewal rates, domain terms, storage, support, ecommerce limits, and add-ons can change. Compare the same billing period and the same required features on the official Weebly pages before declaring either platform cheaper. A free tier may also impose branding, domain, or feature restrictions that make it unsuitable for a business site.

Commerce and growth decisions

Neither platform should be selected on a generic claim that it is “best for ecommerce.” Write down the products or services you sell, payment gateways, taxes, shipping, subscriptions, inventory, staff roles, analytics, marketing integrations, transaction costs, and data-export needs. Then verify each requirement in the current product documentation.

WordPress can be extended through plugins and themes, but every additional component increases update and compatibility work. Weebly may reduce that maintenance burden when its built-in and supported commerce tools cover the job; if they do not, the platform’s constraints can become an expensive reason to rebuild.

Migration, portability, and Weebly’s 2026 outlook

Do not rebuild an existing Weebly site solely because a comparison article labels the service “maintenance mode.” That is a commentator’s characterization, not a confirmed official status. Claims about a lack of major updates since 2024, current support, or a future discontinuation should be checked against current Square/Weebly announcements; they are not settled by the evidence available here.

If you are considering a move, inventory pages, posts, images, redirects, forms, products, customer records, analytics, and SEO metadata. Make a complete backup, perform a test migration on a temporary domain, and confirm that URLs, media, forms, and checkout work before changing DNS. Existing Weebly owners should first verify the current roadmap, export capabilities, migration effort, and business requirements.

A practical decision framework

  1. List non-negotiables. Include content types, integrations, commerce functions, team roles, accessibility, performance, and export requirements.
  2. Choose your operating model. Select Weebly if hosted simplicity is the priority and its current tools meet the list; select WordPress.org if control, extensibility, or portability carries more weight.
  3. Price the complete setup. Include recurring hosting or platform fees, domain renewal, premium extensions, support, backups, security, and your own maintenance time.
  4. Confirm the current details. Recheck Weebly plan terms and roadmap statements, and confirm the WordPress host’s PHP/database versions, backups, update policy, and support scope.
  5. Test before committing. Build a representative page, form, product, or workflow and test export and recovery. A short practical trial is more reliable than a platform-wide slogan.

Bottom line for 2026

Choose self-hosted WordPress.org when you want broad publishing capability, control over your stack, extensibility, or a clearer path to moving hosts—and you are prepared to maintain the installation or pay for management. Choose Weebly when a modest site fits its current tools and a hosted, simpler workflow is more valuable than maximum customization. “WordPress.com” is a separate hosted product, so its pricing, support, and maintenance model must be evaluated independently.
