A payment gateway connects your checkout to a processor or payment method, returns the result, and may handle payment details on another page, in hosted fields, or directly in your checkout. The right integration depends on your business country, currencies, customers’ preferred methods, store features, software compatibility, and security responsibilities—not simply on whether it is a well-known brand.
What happens when a customer pays
In a WooCommerce store, the customer selects a method at checkout. The gateway securely requests the required payment information and relays it to a third-party payment service. That service verifies billing details and available funds, transfers or authorizes money, and sends a payment result back to WooCommerce so the order can receive an appropriate status.
Offline methods follow a different path. Bank transfer can create an order while the customer pays separately; cash on delivery and cheque are also offline-style options. They do not provide the instant authorization of an online processor, so the merchant must verify payment before fulfilling the order.
Common gateway implementations
- Redirect: checkout sends the customer to a provider-hosted page, then returns the customer to the store.
- Hosted or iframe fields: payment fields appear within the checkout experience while the provider handles the sensitive field submission.
- Direct fields: payment fields are presented in the store checkout and the store server participates more directly in the transaction.
- Offline methods: WooCommerce records order details, but payment is completed outside an automated card authorization flow.
These categories describe data flow and customer experience. Follow the specific extension’s current documentation because implementation details and compliance requirements vary.

What to check before choosing an integration
Compare integrations against the store’s actual requirements in this order:
1. Merchant eligibility
Confirm that the provider accepts businesses registered in your country and supports the currencies you need. Payment-method availability can also change by country, account type, and currency. A country shown only as a preview or planned location is not a supported operating location.
Rank #2
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
2. Customer payment methods
List the methods your customers genuinely need: cards, digital wallets, local bank methods, or buy-now-pay-later services. An official Stripe extension, for example, documents card, express-checkout, local, and buy-now-pay-later choices, but availability is conditional rather than universal.
3. Checkout experience
Decide whether a redirect is acceptable, whether hosted fields provide the desired balance of convenience and reduced card-data exposure, or whether a direct in-page flow is essential. Consider mobile behavior, wallet buttons, failed-payment recovery, and whether customers can return to the order without confusion.

5. Total cost
Review the processor’s current pricing for your location and payment types. Include currency-conversion charges, dispute fees, payout costs, and any extension or service charges. Stripe sets its own transaction fees; an old comparison table cannot establish what you will pay today.
6. Compatibility and support
Check the extension’s current WordPress, WooCommerce, PHP, HTTPS, and browser requirements, its maintenance history, and the support channel responsible for problems. Compatibility requirements and supported methods are volatile, so verify them immediately before installation.

A practical setup path
- Identify the commerce stack. Confirm that WooCommerce is installed and that the payment extension is the official integration or comes from a provider you trust.
- Confirm eligibility. Check business-country support, required currencies, and the payment methods available to your account.
- Prepare the site. Update WordPress, WooCommerce, PHP, and the extension to supported versions. Make the entire site accessible over HTTPS, including checkout and account pages.
- Create or connect the provider account. Follow the provider’s current onboarding guide and complete identity, business, and payout verification. During WooPayments signup, the registered business country is selected as part of setup and cannot later be changed through that signup flow.
- Configure deliberately. Enable only methods the business can reconcile, refund, and support. Set order-status, email, statement-descriptor, webhook, and payout options where the extension provides them.
- Test before launch. Use the provider’s test or sandbox environment where available. Test a successful payment, decline, customer cancellation, return from a redirect, confirmation email, order status, refund, and every subscription or preorder path you intend to sell.
- Launch with monitoring. Make a real low-value transaction if appropriate, verify the payout and order record, and monitor failed payments, webhook errors, disputes, and refunds during the first operating days.
Security and PCI DSS responsibilities
PCI DSS applies to entities that store, process, or transmit cardholder data. A redirect or hosted-field gateway can substantially reduce your site’s direct exposure to raw card data, but it does not make the entire merchant environment exempt from PCI responsibilities.
What remains your responsibility
- Secure hosting, HTTPS, backups, and administrative access
- Prompt WordPress, WooCommerce, PHP, theme, and plugin updates
- Strong passwords, least-privilege accounts, and multi-factor authentication where available
- Reviewing installed extensions and removing unused software
- Monitoring logs, checkout behavior, malware warnings, and provider alerts
- Completing the compliance questionnaires, scans, or other controls applicable to your merchant setup
A provider’s own PCI compliance does not certify your whole website or transfer every merchant obligation. Direct gateways generally demand stronger server security and can create broader compliance duties because payment fields and data handling involve your environment. HTTPS is a baseline requirement, not a complete security program.

Common beginner mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a gateway before checking whether it supports the merchant’s country or settlement currency.
- Enabling every available payment method without confirming eligibility, fees, refunds, or reconciliation.
- Assuming hosted checkout eliminates the need to secure WordPress and its plugins.
- Testing only a successful card payment and never testing declines, refunds, redirects, webhooks, or recurring billing.
- Relying on an outdated compatibility list or pricing article instead of the provider’s current documentation.
- Installing multiple overlapping gateways without a clear fallback and order-status policy.
When the “best” gateway is conditional
Stripe, WooPayments, PayPal, and other recognizable names can all be reasonable choices, but no single processor is best for every WordPress store. A local business serving one market may prioritize domestic methods and simple payouts; an international store may prioritize currency coverage and wallet support; a subscription business may need recurring authorization and dispute tooling above all else. Make the choice only after the eligibility, customer-method, workflow, cost, compatibility, and security checks above pass for your store.
