Neither is universally better. WordPress.com is a hosted service that bundles the WordPress software with hosting and managed services. With WordPress.org software, you choose a host and take more direct responsibility for operating your site. Choose according to how much control and maintenance you want, which features your particular plan or host provides, and the total cost—not the names alone.
What is the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com?
WordPress.org is the home of the free, open-source WordPress publishing software. To make a site publicly available with that software, you need a web server, usually through a hosting provider you select. WordPress.com is a hosted service run by Automattic, built on WordPress software; it supplies hosting as part of its service. They are related, but they are not two unrelated content-management systems.
In everyday comparisons, “WordPress.org” usually means using the open-source software with a host you choose, while “WordPress.com” means using Automattic’s hosted service. Downloading WordPress from WordPress.org does not, by itself, provide a live website.
How the two options compare
| Decision factor | WordPress.org software with a host you choose | WordPress.com |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | You select a hosting provider and arrangement; the software needs a web server to run a public site. | Hosting is supplied as part of the service. |
| Maintenance | You or your host handle the operating tasks, such as updates, backups, and security. What the host takes on depends on its service. | The service is managed hosting, so Automattic handles hosting operations; check the plan for the scope of included features and support. |
| Themes and plugins | You can choose from the WordPress ecosystem of themes and plugins, subject to your host and technical setup. | Learn WordPress says all plans include the ability to install plugins and themes. Some features are built in, so a plugin may not be necessary for every need. |
| Files and configuration | Traditional hosting typically gives you direct access to site files and broad control, depending on the host. | Customization varies by plan. Learn WordPress identifies SFTP/SSH, database management, staging sites, and custom code on higher-level plans; do not assume those capabilities are included in every plan. |
| Support | WordPress.org relies on community-driven forums; support from your hosting provider depends on that provider’s terms. | Learn WordPress describes a dedicated support team across paid plans. Confirm the current support scope for the plan you are considering. |
| Costs | The software is free, but a live site still needs hosting and may also involve a domain or paid add-ons. | A free plan and paid plans are offered. Check the current plan page for prices and included features. |
Feature and support details above reflect WordPress.org documentation and the Learn WordPress lesson; plan capabilities can change. Compare the specific plan and host rather than relying on older blanket claims about what either option permits.

Which option fits your site?
Choose WordPress.com if you prefer a managed service
WordPress.com may suit you if you want hosting supplied and would rather rely on a managed service for hosting operations. First check that the plan includes the themes, plugins, customization, and support your site requires. Plugin and theme installation is available across WordPress.com plans according to Learn WordPress, but advanced developer capabilities are not necessarily available on every plan.
Choose WordPress.org software if you want to choose your host
Using WordPress.org software with a provider may suit you if selecting your hosting arrangement and having more direct control over site files and configuration matter to you. You will need to decide which maintenance work to handle yourself and which tasks your host includes. Hosting providers differ: some offer generic hosting, while WordPress-specific or managed WordPress hosting may include services such as installation, backups, updates, or developer tools.

Consider managed WordPress hosting as a middle path
A managed WordPress host can combine the open-source software with a provider that takes on some maintenance. The amount of help, access, and support depends on the provider and plan, so check its terms rather than assuming “managed” means every operational task is covered.

Before signing up or migrating, compare the actual plan and hosting service against the needs of your site:
Rank #3
- Hosting and upkeep: Identify who is responsible for hosting, updates, backups, and security, and what the provider explicitly includes.
- Flexibility: Check the plugin, theme, file, database, and code access available on the exact plan or host you would use.
- Support: Compare the support channel and scope, including what comes from the platform and what comes from a separate hosting provider.
- Total cost: Include recurring hosting or plan charges and any domain or paid add-ons you expect to need. Free software does not mean a live self-hosted site has no operating costs.
Both routes offer portability: WordPress users own their content and can move between hosting providers as needs change. Moving still takes work, and settings or third-party services may not transfer automatically. Plan the migration around what must be moved and reconfigured.
