For most WordPress sites, copy the video’s URL and paste it on a blank line in the block editor. WordPress may turn it into an embedded player automatically; if it does not, use the provider’s block or the generic Embed block. This displays a video hosted by another service—it does not upload the video file to your WordPress Media Library.
Choose the right way to add the video
Embedding, uploading, and self-hosting are different. An embed displays a player supplied by YouTube, Vimeo, or another service. Uploading places a file in WordPress’s Media Library; self-hosting means your WordPress hosting account or another storage service delivers that file. For an existing public video, an embed is usually the easiest route and avoids making your WordPress account responsible for storing and serving the file. It can still load third-party scripts, cookies, and other requests, so an embed is not automatically the fastest or most private choice.

Embed a video by pasting its URL
- Copy the URL of the individual video from its hosting service.
- In the WordPress block editor, open the post or page and place the cursor on a new line.
- Paste the URL. For a supported provider and URL format, WordPress may convert it into an embed block automatically.
- If WordPress shows an embed prompt, click Embed and wait for the player preview.
- Save or publish the page, then open the front-end page to check the player.
If pasting does not work, select the + inserter, search for Embed or the provider’s name, and add that block. You can also type /embed on a new line to find the generic Embed block. Paste the URL into its field and click Embed. WordPress documents this workflow for the block editor at Embed block; WordPress.com documents URL pasting at Embed block support.

WordPress lists services including YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, TikTok, TED, VideoPress, and WordPress.tv among its embed providers. Support depends on the URL and the provider’s current rules; a channel, profile, or landing-page link may not work when a specific video link is needed. See WordPress’s embeds documentation.

Embed a YouTube video
- Copy the URL of the YouTube video, playlist, or live stream.
- Paste it on a blank line in the editor, or add the YouTube block from the block inserter.
- Click Embed if prompted, then check the preview and add a caption if it helps readers.
- Preview the published page on desktop and mobile.
The YouTube block supports videos, playlists, and live streams; see WordPress.com’s YouTube block guide. The video owner must allow embedding, and country, age, account, or other restrictions can prevent playback. Private videos do not work through the ordinary public embed workflow. If WordPress turns a URL into a player but you want a plain link, use descriptive linked text instead of leaving the video URL by itself.
YouTube’s WordPress documentation says the service shares non-personally identifying viewing data with YouTube and the video publisher. For a privacy-sensitive site, review the player’s behavior, your consent setup, and applicable privacy requirements; a privacy-enhanced URL does not guarantee that no data is collected. Embed Vimeo or another video service
For Vimeo, paste the individual video URL on a blank line or add the Vimeo block, then click Embed if WordPress asks. WordPress lists Vimeo as a supported provider in its embeds documentation. If the player does not appear, check the video’s Vimeo privacy and domain-embedding settings as well as the URL. Vimeo’s available plans, storage, and bandwidth limits can change; verify current details in Vimeo’s plan documentation.

Other supported services generally follow the same paste-or-block workflow, but provider support does not mean every link or every type of video will embed. Use the URL for the specific video, not a search result, profile, or general page. If a service is not recognized, try its official iframe code in a Custom HTML block, if your site permits that.
Upload a video with the Video block
Choose the Video block when you want to add a file from your device or Media Library, or use a direct video URL. In the editor, click +, search for Video (or type /video), and select one of the available sources:
- Upload to add a file from your device.
- Media Library to choose a video already in WordPress.
- Insert from URL to provide a direct video-file URL.
The Video block is not the same as a YouTube or Vimeo embed: pasting one of those service URLs into the block may turn it into a provider-specific embed instead. Depending on your WordPress version and site setup, Video block settings can include captions or text tracks, a poster image, playback controls, preload, dimensions, alignment, autoplay, and looping. WordPress lists these options in its Video block guide. The block supports text tracks, but WordPress does not automatically guarantee accurate captions or provide a transcript; supply or configure those separately.

Direct uploads can be reasonable for a short, compressed clip on a site with suitable hosting. Before uploading a large or popular video, consider storage and bandwidth limits, backup size, concurrent viewers, and whether you need adaptive streaming or multiple resolutions. A dedicated host may be more suitable for large, private, or business-critical video.
Add an iframe or custom embed code
Use an iframe when the provider supplies official embed code, the service is not recognized by WordPress, or you need provider-specific parameters. In the block editor, add a Custom HTML block, paste the provider’s code, and preview the page. Use code from the video service itself rather than an untrusted source.
WordPress may sanitize or remove HTML depending on your role and site configuration. Plugins, security tools, managed hosting, or a content security policy can also restrict iframes or scripts. On WordPress.com, Custom HTML permissions and options depend on the site and plan; see its Embed block support. In the Classic Editor, use its HTML/Text view where permitted. In a page builder, use the builder’s video or HTML element; labels and behavior vary.

Custom iframe code may have fixed dimensions that overflow or crop on small screens. Prefer the provider’s responsive embed option when available, and test it at mobile width. If custom styling is necessary, preserve the video’s aspect ratio rather than imposing a desktop-only width.
WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress are not identical
Self-hosted WordPress sites, WordPress.com sites, and managed WordPress environments can differ in plan features, user permissions, plugins, and security settings. WordPress.com’s documentation says its Video block is available on Premium, Business, and Commerce plans, while VideoPress is available on Business and Commerce plans. Check current eligibility and features in WordPress.com’s Video block guide and video support page. Do not assume an option shown in one WordPress environment is available in another.

Check mobile layout and aspect ratio
The core Embed block supports responsive behavior, but the result can still depend on the theme, provider markup, or custom HTML. Test the published page at portrait mobile width and confirm the player stays within the content column. Avoid fixed desktop widths; keep the source video’s proportions in mind, since portrait, square, and older 4:3 videos are not all widescreen. The core block’s responsive setting is documented in the Embed block reference.

Provide captions and context
Use captions for spoken content and consider a transcript for instructional, educational, or otherwise important material. Add a useful caption or nearby explanation so readers know what the video covers. If you also provide a link, make its text descriptive rather than relying on a bare URL. Captions and transcripts must come from the video host, a supplied text-track file, or a separate transcription workflow.
Use autoplay carefully
Browsers may block autoplay, especially when a video has sound. WordPress.com warns about this in its Video block documentation. Avoid autoplay for instructional content unless it clearly benefits the viewer. If a decorative design needs autoplay, muted playback, visible controls, and a poster image are more considerate choices; do not rely on autoplay to convey essential information.
Treat background video as decoration
A Cover block can use video as a background from supported providers, including YouTube, Vimeo, VideoPress, Animoto, TikTok, and WordPress.tv, according to the Cover block reference. Background video should not be the only way essential information is communicated. Provide the same message in text and consider mobile data use.

Fix common video embed problems

If you cannot restore the embed, include a normal link to the video as a fallback so visitors who can access the provider can still watch it.
Choose a video host when the basic embed is not enough
A public YouTube embed is often enough for a tutorial or demonstration. Other needs—cleaner branding, access controls, lead generation, or managed delivery—may call for another service. These are options, not universal rankings; compare current features and terms before choosing.
