Microsoft announced WMIDiag 2.2 on May 12, 2015, as an administrator-focused utility for diagnosing Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) problems. It ran a VBScript, collected diagnostic information, and produced reports; it did not automatically repair WMI. The key caveat today is that Microsoft says the WMI Diagnosis Utility is no longer supported beginning with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, so WMIDiag 2.2 should be treated as historical or legacy tooling—not a generally supported choice for current Windows systems.
What WMIDiag 2.2 was
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is a Windows framework that lets administrators, scripts, applications, and management products query information about hardware, software, services, configuration, and operating-system components. When inventory, monitoring, or a management script fails, WMI may be involved—but an error reported through WMI does not by itself prove that the WMI service or repository is damaged. A provider, permissions issue, application, or another part of Windows can be responsible. Microsoft’s WMI troubleshooting guidance recommends diagnosing the actual failure rather than assuming repository corruption.
WMIDiag, short for WMI Diagnosis Utility, was a Microsoft diagnostic package distributed as WMIDiag.exe. It extracted files including WMIDiag.vbs and documentation. The VBScript inspected WMI-related configuration and gathered information intended to help administrators or support personnel narrow down a problem. The 2.2 release was announced on May 12, 2015. Microsoft’s announcement described bug fixes and new functionality, but does not provide a complete authoritative list of every change; the package’s included documentation is the release-specific reference if you have a verified original copy. Microsoft’s 2.2 announcement is also available as a later Community Hub copy of the original post.

Requirements and limits
- Local administrator rights: Microsoft identified administrative privileges as a requirement. An unelevated run may be incomplete or report that the necessary privileges are missing.
- Windows Script Host: WMIDiag was a VBScript utility, not a PowerShell cmdlet. Script Host had to be available under the system’s policy.
- Compatible system: The tool could warn or fail on an unsupported Windows build. That warning is about the utility’s compatibility, not proof that WMI is broken.
- Local diagnosis: WMIDiag was designed to diagnose the computer on which it ran, rather than act as a conventional remote WMI diagnostic client. Administrators could arrange remote execution through tools such as Group Policy, management systems, WinRM/WinRS, or PsExec, but that is remote deployment or execution—not native remote-diagnosis support.
- Read-only behavior: It reported findings and recommendations; it did not automatically change the system to repair WMI.
Microsoft’s historical guidance estimated a run could take roughly 15–20 minutes, depending on the machine and collection work. Treat that only as an old estimate, not a runtime guarantee on another system.
How the historical command-line run worked
On a compatible legacy machine, an administrator would extract the package, open an elevated command prompt, change to its folder, and invoke the script using the command-line Windows Script Host, cscript:
C:
cd WMIDiag
cscript WMIDiag.vbs
Using cscript exposed console activity and allowed command-line options, unlike double-clicking the script. The default output location was the user’s temporary directory. To direct logs to a chosen folder, Microsoft documented the LOGFILEPATH option, for example:

Repository consistency was not checked by default. The historical utility-specific option was:
cscript WMIDiag.vbs checkconsistency
This parameter is not a general Windows repair command. Because the utility is unsupported on newer Windows versions, do not run it on a production system merely to try this check. Microsoft also noted possible 32-bit/WoW execution issues on 64-bit systems; using an appropriate native command shell does not remove the broader support limitation.
What the reports contain—and how to read them
WMIDiag generated three main types of output, with dynamically formed filenames that could include system and run details:

The report distinguished warnings from errors. An error may point to a condition needing attention, while a warning may matter only in light of the machine’s configuration or the application involved. Neither label is a substitute for connecting a finding to the observed symptom.
For a useful support investigation, preserve the output and correlate it with the failing task, the relevant namespace, class, provider, permissions, and service state. Check Event Viewer and any logs from the application or management product producing the error. Consider recent software, driver, policy, or Windows changes. A report can help localize the investigation, but it cannot determine by itself whether the underlying fault belongs to Windows, a third-party provider, or the application using WMI.
Do not start by deleting the WMI repository
Repository deletion or rebuilding is not a safe first-line fix. Microsoft warns that deleting the repository as an initial troubleshooting step can damage Windows or installed applications. First establish what is failing and whether the cause is a particular provider, namespace, permissions setting, service, or dependent application. Use the procedure Microsoft documents for the specific diagnosis, and involve the product vendor or Microsoft support when the system’s role or impact warrants it. Microsoft’s troubleshooting article discusses this caution.

Is WMIDiag 2.2 supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No—not as a currently supported Microsoft diagnostic utility. Microsoft’s current WMI troubleshooting documentation states that the WMI Diagnosis Utility is no longer supported starting with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. That covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 as well as Windows Server 2012 and later. Do not assume the old script will run correctly, produce a complete report, or be suitable for a production system on those versions.
If investigating a legacy machine or reviewing an archived support case, use a package only when its provenance can be verified, isolate and test it first, and treat its findings cautiously. Do not obtain it from an untrusted third-party mirror. The existence of the 2015 release does not establish that an official download remains available or that it is safe and supported on a current build.

Practical modern alternatives
There is no single direct replacement that reproduces WMIDiag’s broad report. On a supported Windows system, use focused checks and the diagnostic evidence relevant to the failing application:
Best Value
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_OperatingSystem
Get-CimInstance -Namespace rootcimv2 -ClassName Win32_Service
Get-CimClass -Namespace rootcimv2
These PowerShell commands test access to common CIM/WMI data and classes; they are not equivalent to WMIDiag’s full report generator. Pair them with Event Viewer, provider-specific logs, namespace and permission checks, and the application’s own diagnostics. For deeper tracing, consult Microsoft’s guidance on WMI troubleshooting and ETW: older WMI log files were replaced by Event Tracing for Windows (ETW), so old instructions to inspect those logs may not apply to current systems.
Do not confuse WMIDiag with WMIC. WMIDiag generated diagnostic reports; WMIC was a command-line interface for querying and managing WMI. Microsoft has deprecated the WMIC utility and points users toward PowerShell for many WMI tasks. That deprecation applies to WMIC, not to WMI itself. See Microsoft’s WMIC documentation and its WMI command-line tools reference.
Bottom line
WMIDiag 2.2 was a read-only Microsoft diagnostic utility released in 2015 to help investigate WMI problems, with logs and reports rather than automatic repairs. Its present-day value is mainly historical or limited to carefully controlled legacy investigations: Microsoft says it is unsupported from Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 onward. On current Windows, investigate the specific provider or application failure with PowerShell/CIM, event and provider logs, and supported Microsoft or vendor guidance—and do not rebuild the repository as a first step.
