Use a source image of at least 2560 × 1440 pixels for a Wix background when you want high-resolution quality. Wix presents that figure as a quality recommendation, not a mandatory canvas size for every page or screen. The image can still be cropped because Wix backgrounds adapt to the visitor’s viewport, scaling mode and focal position.
For a dependable result, prepare a large, well-composed original, set its desktop position, then inspect the mobile editor separately. Crop the mobile version or assign a different image when the desktop composition does not survive a narrow screen. Compress files over 25 MB before uploading and consider a static color or shape when loading speed matters more than photography.
What size should a Wix background image be?
Start with 2560 × 1440 pixels. Wix’s site-media guidance identifies that size as a high-resolution recommendation for quality and clarity. It is not a universal required background dimension, and it does not guarantee that every pixel will remain visible. A background fills an area whose shape changes between desktop, tablet and mobile layouts, so the editor may crop or scale the image.
Think of 2560 × 1440 as a practical source-size floor for a prominent background, not as a promise of a fixed 16:9 display. The final appearance depends on the page area, the visitor’s viewport, the selected scaling mode and the position of the subject inside the image. Why one dimension cannot fit every screen
A desktop monitor is usually wider than a phone held vertically. If Wix preserved every edge of a desktop image on a phone, the image would often become too small to cover the section. Instead, responsive background behavior can enlarge the image and trim its sides or top and bottom. The crop is not a defect; it is the consequence of filling a differently shaped container.
Place important content—faces, products, logos and text—near the visual center or inside a broad “safe” area. Keep decorative detail near the edges. Then test the actual page at both wide and narrow widths rather than judging the source file alone.

Wix background scaling modes and positioning
The available labels and behavior can vary by Wix editor context. Wix’s desktop documentation describes Fill as resizing the background to fit the screen while retaining proportions; its mobile guidance lists Fill, Fit, Tile and Stretch and provides a positioning grid. A separate mobile-background article describes a mobile Fill option as showing the image in its original size. Treat these descriptions as context-specific rather than assuming that one mode behaves identically in every editor.

Use the editor’s position grid to anchor the important part of the image. If a subject is on the left, choose a left-focused position; if it is centered, use a central position. Positioning changes which part is sacrificed when Wix has to crop.

How to configure a desktop and mobile background in Wix
- Open the page in the Wix Editor. Select the page or section whose background you want to change and open its background-image controls.
- Choose the source image. Upload an appropriately large file or select an image offered through Wix’s media choices. Wix says backgrounds may use images from Wix or Unsplash for free, or purchased imagery from Shutterstock; availability and licensing are handled in Wix’s own interface. See Wix’s background-image instructions.
- Set desktop scaling and position. Select the scaling option available for that background, then use the position grid to keep the focal subject visible. Preview the full page, not just the background picker.
- Switch to the mobile editor. A phone layout has a different shape and size, so do not assume that the desktop crop transfers cleanly.
- Crop the mobile image. In the mobile editor, use the background image’s Crop & Edit or Crop & Extend controls, then adjust scaling and position. Wix documents this workflow in its mobile cropping article.
- Choose a separate mobile image when necessary. Wix allows a different image for mobile. Use that option when the desktop composition puts the subject outside the phone crop or when a simpler image improves readability. The separate-image workflow is described in Wix’s mobile background guidance.
- Preview and publish. Check the page at several browser widths and on a real phone. Look for clipped faces, hidden calls to action, unreadable overlaid text and unusually slow loading before publishing.
Preparing the file before upload
Start with enough pixels
Use the 2560 × 1440 recommendation as your starting point for a large, full-width background. A smaller source may look soft when enlarged on a large display. A larger source can be useful for a highly detailed image, but it also creates a bigger file and more work for the browser.
Compress oversized files
Wix advises compressing files larger than 25 MB before upload. That threshold is a practical warning, not a target file size for every image. Export a visually acceptable version, then inspect it at 100% zoom for banding, ringing or blurred text. If the background is photographic, moderate compression is usually less distracting than a slow first load.

Choose an efficient format
Wix’s site-performance guidance recommends AVIF rather than PNG unless transparency is needed. Wix also says uploaded images are automatically resized for optimization. These are current Wix recommendations; they do not mean that every background is delivered in one identical format or at one fixed dimension. If you need transparent pixels, retain PNG; otherwise evaluate AVIF where your workflow supports it.
Crop or reduce an unnecessarily large image before uploading, particularly for mobile. Wix specifically advises cropping or making large images smaller to help mobile loading. When speed is the priority, Wix suggests replacing a photographic background with a static shape or colored section.

Composition checklist for desktop and mobile
- Keep the main subject away from extreme edges that are likely to be trimmed.
- Leave uncluttered space where Wix text and buttons will sit.
- Use a focal position that matches the subject rather than accepting the default center automatically.
- Inspect both orientations after every change to scaling or crop.
- Check contrast behind headings, navigation and buttons at the narrowest layout you support.
- Test a slow mobile connection if the background is large or appears near the top of the page.

How to verify the published result
The editor preview is necessary but not sufficient. After publishing, open the live URL at a wide desktop width, a tablet-like width and a narrow phone width. Confirm that the background crop leaves the important subject visible and that foreground text remains readable. If you need repeatable snapshots for a design review, capture the published page at specific viewport sizes and compare the files after each change.
