Windows Touch Keyboard is a built-in software keyboard designed mainly for touchscreen PCs and tablets. To open it, show the Touch keyboard icon in the taskbar and select it; tapping a text field may also open it automatically when Windows detects the right device and keyboard state. The steps differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10, and the Touch Keyboard is not the same tool as Windows On-Screen Keyboard.
Touch Keyboard vs. On-Screen Keyboard
These are two separate Windows tools with overlapping uses. The Touch Keyboard is optimized for typing on a touchscreen with a finger or pen, and offers touch-oriented layouts and handwriting input. The On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) is an accessibility utility intended for use with a mouse, touch, pen, switch device, or another pointing method. It includes options such as scanning mode and an optional numeric keypad. Choose the Touch Keyboard for tablet-style typing; consider the OSK when you need its accessibility controls or a more persistent conventional keyboard. Shortcut note: Pressing Windows + Ctrl + O opens the On-Screen Keyboard, not the Touch Keyboard. For the Touch Keyboard, use its taskbar icon or tap a text field when automatic display is working.

Open the Touch Keyboard in Windows 11
- Right-click the taskbar, or press and hold it on a touchscreen, then select Taskbar settings.
- Open System tray icons.
- Set Touch keyboard to Always.
- Select the keyboard icon in the taskbar’s system-tray area.
If you use a detachable tablet without its keyboard, choose When no keyboard attached instead. Windows can use this setting to show the icon when it detects no wired or Bluetooth keyboard. Choose Always if you want the icon available even while a physical keyboard is connected. Microsoft lists these options in its Touch Keyboard enable and disable instructions.

Open the Touch Keyboard in Windows 10
- Right-click or press and hold the taskbar.
- Select Show touch keyboard button.
- Select the keyboard icon that appears in the taskbar.
Windows 10 also has an automatic-display setting at Start > Settings > Devices > Typing. Under Touch keyboard, turn on Show the touch keyboard when not in tablet mode and there’s no keyboard attached if you want it to appear under those conditions. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; these are legacy instructions, and the operating system no longer receives normal free security and feature support from Microsoft.
Why it may not open automatically
Tapping a text field does not guarantee that the keyboard will appear. Automatic display can depend on the Windows version, tablet or device state, whether Windows detects an attached physical keyboard, the setting you chose, and whether the app exposes its text field in a way Windows recognizes. Detachable keyboard covers and folded-back keyboards can also affect detection.

To check whether the problem is automatic display or the keyboard itself, first open it from the taskbar icon. If that works, the Touch Keyboard is available and the issue is more likely to involve device detection, settings, or the app’s text field. If it does not, check that the icon is enabled and not set to Never in Windows 11.
Hide or disable the Touch Keyboard
Windows 11
Close the keyboard if it is open, then go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > System tray icons and set Touch keyboard to Never. Microsoft describes this option as hiding the icon and disabling the Touch Keyboard. It does not disable the separate On-Screen Keyboard.

Windows 10
Close the keyboard, right-click the taskbar and clear Show touch keyboard button. Then open Start > Settings > Devices > Typing and turn off Show the touch keyboard when not in tablet mode and there’s no keyboard attached.
Choose a layout and reposition the keyboard
In Windows 11, open the Touch Keyboard and select its keyboard-settings icon in the upper-left corner to choose a layout. Depending on the Windows version and input language, the options include:

- Default: Larger, touch-friendly keys, with some keys omitted.
- Split: Two halves arranged for two-handed tablet typing.
- Small: A compact keyboard that can be moved around the screen.
- Traditional: A layout closer to a physical keyboard, with a wider selection of keys.
- Handwriting panel: Write with a pen or fingertip and let Windows recognize the input.
Japanese input has additional 12-key and 50-on layouts. Options vary by language, and swipe or shape-based typing is not available in every language. A language change may affect the layouts available, but you do not need to change Windows’ display language just to show the keyboard.
The keyboard can be docked in a fixed position, generally along the bottom, or undocked and moved. When you undock the Default, Split, or Traditional layout, Windows switches it to the Small layout. If the keyboard seems to have changed unexpectedly, check whether it was undocked.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The taskbar icon is missing: In Windows 11, check Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > System tray icons > Touch keyboard and make sure the setting is not Never. In Windows 10, right-click the taskbar and enable Show touch keyboard button. On a touchscreen, press and hold the taskbar if right-clicking is awkward.
- The icon is visible, but tapping text does nothing: Select the icon to test manual opening. Check the automatic-display setting, keyboard attachment, and device state. If it opens manually, test another app’s text field; behavior can vary by application.
- A physical keyboard is connected, but the icon remains: That is expected if Windows 11 is set to Always. Change it to When no keyboard attached if you want conditional visibility.
- The wrong layout appears: Check the keyboard-settings menu, current input language, and whether the keyboard has been undocked. Some layouts are language-dependent.
- The keyboard covers the text field: Try moving or docking/undocking it, or switch to the Small layout. If the app remains awkward to use, an external keyboard may be more practical for longer sessions.
If settings look correct but the behavior remains inconsistent, restart Windows and check for pending updates. Avoid registry modifications as a first fix: official taskbar and Settings controls are safer and less dependent on a particular Windows build.
When to use a physical keyboard instead
The Touch Keyboard is convenient for short messages, searches, tablet use without a keyboard cover, and handwriting with a pen. A physical keyboard is usually more comfortable for long documents, coding, spreadsheets, frequent modifier-key shortcuts, numeric entry, or anyone who needs tactile feedback. USB keyboards are straightforward for many PCs; Bluetooth models can suit tablets, but require Bluetooth support and a charged battery. Windows may change automatic Touch Keyboard behavior when it detects a physical keyboard.
For a Surface Pro, look for a keyboard cover confirmed for that exact generation; compatibility is model-specific. A full-size Surface Keyboard is a different kind of accessory, suited to a desk rather than an attached tablet cover. For other devices, check the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying.
