Use Alt+Tab to switch between open Windows programs and windows. Hold Alt, press Tab until the desired thumbnail is highlighted, then release Alt. For a visual overview use Windows+Tab; for a pinned app use Windows+a number; and for another virtual desktop use Windows+Ctrl+Left Arrow or Right Arrow.
Alt+Tab: the standard program-switching shortcut
- Hold down Alt.
- Press Tab once to open the task switcher.
- Continue tapping Tab while holding Alt to move through the open windows.
- Release Alt when the target window is highlighted. Windows brings that window to the foreground.
Alt+Tab switches windows, not just application names. Thus, two File Explorer windows and a browser window can all appear separately. The order follows Windows’ task-switcher order, not necessarily the left-to-right order of taskbar icons. Microsoft documents this behavior in its multitasking guide.
To move backward, hold Alt+Shift and press Tab (Alt+Shift+Tab).

When Windows+Tab is better
Press Windows+Tab to open Task View. It shows open windows alongside your virtual desktops, making it easier to identify a particular document or application when many items are open. Use Tab to move among controls, the arrow keys to move through desktops or windows, and Enter to select. This keyboard navigation is described in Microsoft’s taskbar accessibility guidance.
Task View is also where you can create desktops, move windows between them, and organize workspaces. It is an overview and selection screen rather than a rapid cycling shortcut.

Switching between windows of the same program
For several windows belonging to one application, Alt+Tab remains the general method: keep pressing Tab until the specific window is highlighted. You can also:

- Ctrl-click a grouped taskbar icon to cycle through that application’s windows.
- Use Windows+Ctrl+number to return to the last active window of a pinned application.
Do not confuse windows with tabs inside one window. Alt+Tab normally switches windows, not ordinary browser or document tabs. Windows can optionally include recent Microsoft Edge tabs in the switcher; that behavior is controlled in Multitasking settings.

Taskbar shortcuts for pinned programs
The number in Windows+number refers to the pinned app’s current position on the taskbar, counted from left to right. For example, Windows+1 targets the first pinned app and Windows+9 the ninth. If the app is closed, Windows launches it; if it is running, Windows switches to it. Rearranging pinned icons changes which app each number targets.
Windows+Shift+number opens a new instance of the pinned app, while Shift+clicking its taskbar icon does the same. These are useful when a predictable taskbar layout matters more than cycling through every open window.

Virtual desktops are a different kind of switching

| Windows+Ctrl+F4 | Close the current desktop |
These shortcuts change workspace, not the active program within the same workspace. Closing a desktop does not close its applications; Windows moves those windows to another available desktop, according to Microsoft’s multiple-desktop documentation.

- Two or three frequently alternating apps: Alt+Tab.
- Many windows or an unknown target: Windows+Tab.
- A known pinned app: Windows+number.
- Several windows from one pinned app: Ctrl-click its grouped taskbar icon or use Windows+Ctrl+number for the last active one.
- Separate projects or workspaces: virtual desktops.
Control what Alt+Tab displays
Open Settings > System > Multitasking. Windows provides options for whether Alt+Tab includes windows from only the current desktop or from all desktops. The same area can control whether recent Microsoft Edge tabs appear. Labels differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases, so search within the Multitasking page if the wording is not identical. Microsoft’s multitasking instructions describe these choices.

When Alt+Tab does not show the window you expect
- Keep Alt held: tap Tab while Alt remains down; releasing Alt immediately activates the current selection.
- Open Task View: use Windows+Tab to inspect every visible window and desktop.
- Check other desktops: the window may be on another workspace. Change the Multitasking option to include all desktops if desired.
- Check grouped windows: use Alt+Tab, Ctrl-click the taskbar group, or the pinned-app shortcut.
- Review Edge-tab settings: extra browser tabs can make the switcher look different from an app-only list.
- Check the keyboard: compact laptops may require Fn; gaming modes can disable the Windows key.
- Consider the environment: full-screen games, remote sessions, virtual machines, kiosks, and some accessibility tools may capture or alter shortcuts. Microsoft notes that common shortcuts do not work identically in every application.
The Task View taskbar button may be hidden, but Windows+Tab remains the keyboard route. Core switching shortcuts are documented for current Windows 10 and Windows 11, although screens and labels vary. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that does not by itself disable these shortcuts.
