If opening images is slow, first check whether you are using Microsoft Photos or the older Windows Photo Viewer. They are different apps, so the right fix depends on which one is delayed. For Microsoft Photos, start with its built-in Repair option, then Reset if needed. If several apps are slow, test a local copy of the image and check Windows and storage health before changing advanced settings.
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the PC still works, but it no longer receives Microsoft’s normal free security updates and support. Microsoft’s Windows support information explains the support status.
Before troubleshooting: identify the app and the kind of delay
Right-click an image, select Open with, and note the selected app. It may be Microsoft Photos, Windows Photo Viewer, Paint, a browser, or another program. Many people use “Photo Viewer” as a general name for the app that opens pictures, but instructions for Microsoft Photos do not necessarily apply to the legacy Windows Photo Viewer. Microsoft describes Photos as its built-in app for viewing, organizing, editing, and sharing photos and videos.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNext, compare a few files: a small JPEG saved on the PC, a PNG, a large camera image, and—if relevant—an image on a USB drive, network share, or cloud-synced folder. Note whether the delay happens when the viewer opens, when you move between images, or only while File Explorer fills in thumbnails. This simple comparison helps separate an app problem from a file, location, or Explorer problem.

- One image is slow: the file may be unusually large, damaged, or in a format that takes longer to process.
- Only files on an external, network, or cloud location are slow: test the same image from the PC’s internal drive before changing app settings.
- Explorer previews are slow but images open promptly: investigate thumbnail generation rather than the image viewer.
- Many apps or files are slow: check system load, storage, and Windows components as well as Photos.
These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular cause. Back up irreplaceable images before broader recovery steps. Repairing or resetting an app is different from deleting files in Pictures or on another drive, but a backup is prudent before any significant troubleshooting.
1. Repair Microsoft Photos, then reset it if necessary
Repair is the least disruptive first step. Microsoft notes that Repair and Reset options are not available for every app. If Photos offers them, try Repair, test the app, and use Reset only if Repair does not solve the delay. Microsoft’s app-repair instructions give the corresponding Settings paths.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Photos, select the three-dot menu beside it, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, then reopen Photos and test the same image.
- If it is still slow, return to the same screen and select Reset. Restart Windows and test again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select Microsoft Photos, then Advanced options.
- Select Repair if available. If that does not help, choose Reset.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Reset returns the app to its default state and may remove app-specific stored data or settings; it does not, by itself, delete image files saved in your folders or on an external drive. Microsoft explains app Reset behavior in its Windows app support tools documentation.
2. Update Photos and Windows
Install pending Windows updates from Settings > Windows Update (the label or location can vary slightly by Windows release). If Photos is managed through Microsoft Store, open the Store and check its library for app updates. Restart after updates if prompted, then retest. An update is a sensible maintenance step, not a guaranteed fix for slow image opening.

If you need to ask for help, record your Windows version/build and the Photos version shown in the app’s settings or app information. Behavior can vary by version, so that information is more useful than describing the app only as “Photo Viewer.”
3. Compare the image on local and external storage
Copy one affected image to a local folder such as Pictures or the Desktop, then open that copy. Compare it with the original on a USB drive, external hard drive, network share, or OneDrive/other cloud-synced folder.
- If the local copy opens quickly, investigate the original location: the drive may be slow or busy, a network connection may be lagging, or a cloud client may still be syncing. Check that the file is available locally and that you have permission to read it.
- If both copies are slow but other images are not, the particular file may be very large, damaged, or otherwise unusual. Try another copy or a different viewer to narrow it down.
- If local images and other applications are also sluggish, the viewer may not be the root cause; check system load and storage below.
4. Distinguish a slow thumbnail from a slow viewer
If the delay is in File Explorer—blank icons or previews taking a long time to appear—rather than when opening the full image, rebuilding the thumbnail cache is a reasonable, low-risk test. It will make Windows regenerate previews, so they may take time to return.

5. Check system load and storage
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc while reproducing the delay. Look for sustained high CPU, memory, or disk activity and note whether a sync client, antivirus scan, or another task coincides with it. Also check whether the system drive is nearly full and whether the problem occurs only with a particular external drive. If several programs are affected, investigate the PC’s general performance and drive condition rather than repeatedly resetting Photos.
If the problem started just after a Windows or driver update, note that timing. Avoid random GPU-control-panel or registry changes: without evidence that a specific setting is involved, they can introduce new problems without addressing a slow drive, file, or app.
6. Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
Use these commands if the slowdown affects Windows more broadly, or if simpler app and location tests have not helped. Open Command Prompt as administrator (search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator). Run DISM first, wait for it to finish, and then run SFC:

7. Treat display color profiles as an advanced, targeted test
A display profile is not a first-line explanation for every slow viewer. If the lag began after monitor calibration or a profile change, you can test that possibility cautiously. Press Win + R, enter colorcpl.exe, and review the Devices and Advanced tabs. Record the current profile and settings before making any change. Temporarily test the Windows default profile or remove only a recently added profile if you know how to restore it, then restart and compare.
Do not casually delete a calibrated profile: it can affect color accuracy, which matters for photography and print work. If the test makes no difference, restore the original configuration.

If Repair, Reset, and updates do not help, use Windows app-management controls or Microsoft Store to uninstall and reinstall Photos if those options are offered on your system. Back up important files before broader recovery actions, and test again before changing the default app association.

PowerShell removal commands found in community answers are a more advanced fallback, not a routine fix. Package names and app state can vary, and removing the package may leave you without the viewer until it is reinstalled. What if the slow app is Windows Photo Viewer?
Windows Photo Viewer is a legacy viewer associated with older Windows versions, not simply another name for Microsoft Photos. Test the same local image in Photos and, if available, another viewer to see whether the delay is specific to the legacy app. If only that viewer is slow, switching apps may be the practical solution.
Some guides offer registry files to restore Windows Photo Viewer. Registry imports can change system configuration and should not be treated as an official Microsoft performance fix. Use only reputable, version-appropriate instructions, make a backup first, and do not assume the old viewer supports newer formats or the features in Photos. Switching viewers can work around an app-specific issue, but it will not fix slow storage or broader Windows problems.
When another viewer makes sense
If your only need is opening images and Photos remains sluggish after app-specific checks, you can choose another viewer. Download it from the vendor’s official site, check format support and privacy practices, and avoid unofficial repackaged installers. Third-party apps have their own update policies and trade-offs; installing one is an option, not a required repair.
Escalate only after isolating the cause
If Photos and other apps remain slow after these checks, use Windows recovery options only after backing up important files. Microsoft lists options such as System Restore, uninstalling a recent update, Reset this PC, or reinstalling Windows, with progressively broader effects. Review the recovery choices before proceeding. Reset this PC can remove apps and settings, and the selected option determines what happens to personal files; understand the choices and keep a separate backup first. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance.
