Windows keyboard accessibility options are built-in tools that change how keystrokes are accepted, provide feedback about keyboard states, or let you use Windows without a physical keyboard. In Windows 11, open them at Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard. In Windows 10, use Settings → Ease of Access → Keyboard. The quickest route on either version is Windows key + U.
Choose Sticky Keys for difficulty pressing several keys together, Filter Keys for accidental or repeated keystrokes, Toggle Keys for audible Caps Lock or Num Lock feedback, and the On-Screen Keyboard when physical keyboard input is difficult or unavailable.

Windows 11
- Press Windows + U, or open Start → Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select Keyboard.
Windows 10
- Press Windows + U, or open Start → Settings.
- Select Ease of Access.
- Select Keyboard.
If the physical keyboard is not working, open Settings with the mouse and turn on On-Screen Keyboard. If the keyboard still works enough to enter a shortcut, press Windows + Ctrl + O.
Sticky Keys
Sticky Keys lets you use a multi-key shortcut one key at a time. For example, instead of holding Ctrl while pressing S, press Ctrl, release it, and then press S. This is useful when pressing or holding several modifier keys simultaneously is difficult.
Turn it on or off from the Keyboard accessibility page. Windows can also activate it when you press Shift five times. If that shortcut is being triggered accidentally, open Sticky Keys’ detailed settings and disable the activation shortcut where that control is available. Turning the feature off does not always disable the shortcut prompt by itself.
Sticky Keys does not repair a stuck or defective key, compensate for missed keystrokes, filter repeated input, or turn arbitrary key sequences into accessible commands. It can also interfere with games or software that expects keys to be held simultaneously.

Filter Keys changes keyboard sensitivity. It can ignore very brief keystrokes or delay the start and repetition of a held key, helping when involuntary movements cause accidental taps or repeated characters.

Open the Keyboard accessibility page, turn on Filter Keys, and use its additional settings to adjust timing where your Windows build provides those controls. The shortcut is Right Shift held for eight seconds.
If typing suddenly feels slow, quick taps disappear, or a keyboard seems to ignore input, turn Filter Keys off and test in Notepad. If the problem remains, try another keyboard or USB port, check the keyboard layout and language, and investigate drivers, wireless connectivity, stuck keys, or keyboard utilities. Filter Keys is not the same as the enterprise Keyboard Filter feature described later.
Toggle Keys
Toggle Keys plays a sound when Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock changes state. It is useful when indicator lights are difficult to see or a keyboard does not have them.

Enable or disable it on the Keyboard accessibility page, or hold Num Lock for five seconds. Toggle Keys confirms a state change; it does not prevent those keys from changing state. Other system sounds, firmware behavior, or a stuck key can also cause beeps, so not every keyboard sound comes from Toggle Keys.

On-Screen Keyboard
The On-Screen Keyboard displays a virtual keyboard that can be operated with a mouse or another compatible pointing device. It can provide temporary input while a physical keyboard is being repaired, or support users who cannot reliably operate physical keys.
Turn it on at Windows 11: Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard, or Windows 10: Settings → Ease of Access → Keyboard. You can also press Windows + Ctrl + O.
Do not confuse it with the touch keyboard, which is primarily designed for touchscreen text entry, or voice typing, which converts speech to text. The On-Screen Keyboard can occupy valuable screen space and may be slower for long passages. Some games, secure sign-in screens, remote sessions, elevated prompts, and preboot environments may handle it differently or not provide it at all.
Mouse Keys
Mouse Keys uses the numeric keypad to move and click the mouse pointer. It is configured separately from the Keyboard page at Windows key + U → Accessibility → Mouse → Mouse Keys in Windows 11. Windows 10 uses the corresponding Ease of Access → Mouse page.

The shortcut is Left Alt + Left Shift + Num Lock. Mouse Keys is most practical with a full numeric keypad. Laptop keyboards with embedded number pads may require an Fn or Num Lock combination, and Num Lock state can affect behavior. It is not simply the same as using arrow keys to navigate a pointer.
Other keyboard-related settings
Underline access keys
The option to underline access keys helps identify letters used with Alt to open menus or activate controls. It does not create an access key when an application has not defined one, and behavior varies between classic desktop programs, Windows components, and newer applications. Microsoft explains access-key behavior in its accessibility design guidance.
Print Screen
Windows keyboard settings may include an option to use the Print Screen key to open screen capture or snipping. This is primarily a convenience setting rather than a disability-specific input tool, and behavior can differ by Windows release, keyboard manufacturer, and third-party screenshot software.

Related keyboard-driven accessibility tools
- Magnifier: Press Windows + Plus to turn it on, Windows + Plus or Minus to change zoom, and Windows + Esc to turn it off. While active, Ctrl + Alt + I inverts colors.
- Narrator: Provides spoken descriptions and has its own extensive command set. Use Microsoft’s shortcut reference for Narrator-specific commands rather than assuming ordinary Windows shortcuts apply.
- Voice typing: Press Windows + H to dictate text in supported fields. It is mainly speech-to-text, not complete hands-free control of Windows.
- Windows Speech Recognition: Microsoft documents Windows + Ctrl + S for turning it on. Broader speech-recognition tools can provide more navigation and command control than voice typing.
Troubleshooting common symptoms
“My computer beeps when I press keys.”
Check Toggle Keys, but also consider system notification sounds, keyboard firmware, a stuck key, or an application utility. Test in a simple text editor and try another keyboard if possible.
“My keyboard ignores quick taps.”
Turn off Filter Keys and test again. If the problem persists, check the keyboard connection, USB port, wireless battery or receiver, layout, drivers, and physical switches.
“Pressing Shift brings up a prompt.”
Shift pressed five times is the Sticky Keys shortcut. Open Keyboard accessibility settings, turn Sticky Keys off if you do not need it, and disable its activation shortcut in the detailed settings.
“My numeric keypad moves the mouse.”
Mouse Keys is probably enabled. Press Left Alt + Left Shift + Num Lock, or open Accessibility → Mouse and turn Mouse Keys off. Check Num Lock and any laptop Fn controls as well.

“My shortcuts work one key at a time.”
Sticky Keys may be enabled. Turn it off from the Keyboard accessibility page and disable its shortcut if accidental activation is recurring.
“My keyboard no longer works.”
Use the mouse to open Settings and enable the On-Screen Keyboard. Then test the physical keyboard in a simple text field, try another USB port or keyboard, check for a stuck key, and verify the keyboard layout and language. A Windows accessibility setting cannot fix a failed switch, damaged cable, depleted wireless battery, or firmware problem.
When Windows’ built-in options are not enough
Windows can help with modifier keys, keystroke filtering, audible state feedback, pointer control, and alternative text entry. It does not provide every type of physical or customized assistance. Consider specialized hardware or software when you need a low-force or one-handed layout, split or ergonomic construction, keyguards, large keys, adaptive switches, programmable remapping, advanced chorded input, or reliable operation before Windows loads.
Suitability depends on the user’s physical access needs, applications, device, and operating environment. Professional assistive-technology guidance can be more appropriate than choosing a generic keyboard. Also remember that Windows’ consumer Filter Keys is different from Keyboard Filter, an enterprise and embedded-device feature for suppressing unwanted keys or combinations. Microsoft documents Keyboard Filter for specified Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions and notes that it is not supported in a Remote Desktop session: Keyboard Filter documentation.
Important limitations
Accessibility tools available after sign-in may not work identically at the sign-in screen, in BIOS or firmware setup, during Windows installation, in every administrator prompt, inside games using exclusive input modes, or during remote sessions. Do not assume that an on-screen keyboard or shortcut will be available at every stage of startup.
