Error 0x80070570 means Windows could not read or process a required file or directory. Microsoft maps it to ERROR_FILE_OR_DIRECTORY_CORRUPTED, but the code is a symptom rather than a complete diagnosis. The correct fix depends on whether it appears in Windows Update, an upgrade, USB setup, or ordinary file access.

Back up important files first. Then use the path below: repair Windows with DISM and SFC, check the file system when appropriate, recreate suspect installation media, and investigate hardware if corruption continues.

Identify where 0x80070570 occurs

Where you see it Most relevant possibilities Best starting point
Windows Update Corrupt component-store or update files, disk errors, filter-driver interference DISM, then SFC, then a file-system check
Windows 10 or 11 upgrade Existing system corruption, unreliable storage, incompatible software Back up, repair Windows, then retry
Fresh installation from USB Bad download or USB, unstable port, target-drive errors Recreate official media and test another drive or port
Copying or opening files Corrupt source or destination, failing storage, bad cable or connection Test another drive, cable, and port; protect data
Application or archive extraction Corrupt download, destination errors, storage or memory instability Download again and check the destination drive

Record the full message and the operation that triggered it. “Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing” points toward setup media, the target disk, or both; it does not by itself prove that a hard drive has failed.

Microsoft documents the Windows Update error and its repair sequence at its troubleshooting article. The broader error mapping and filter-driver context are described in Microsoft’s support documentation.

Before running repairs

  • Copy documents, photos, browser data, work files, and other irreplaceable data to a separate drive or cloud location.
  • If the drive clicks, grinds, overheats, disconnects, freezes, or produces repeated read errors, prioritize recovery over repeated scans.
  • Do not format, delete partitions, or reinstall Windows until the backup is verified.
  • Disconnect unnecessary external storage while troubleshooting updates or setup.

Microsoft also advises backing up before creating installation media or reinstalling Windows: official installation-media guidance.

Repair a running Windows installation

1. Run DISM first

  1. Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
  2. Select Run as administrator and approve User Account Control.
  3. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for a successful completion or a clear error before continuing. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies files used by SFC. By default, it may obtain repair files through Windows Update. Microsoft’s instructions are in Use the System File Checker tool.

If DISM cannot use Windows Update

Use a compatible mounted Windows image or network share as the source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

C:RepairSourceWindows is only a placeholder. Replace it with the actual path to a source matching the installed edition, language, architecture, and build as closely as possible. Do not repeatedly run the same command if the component store, source, or drive is clearly damaged.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

2. Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Keep the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Interpret the result as follows:

  • No integrity violations: protected Windows files were not found to be corrupt.
  • Corrupt files repaired: restart and retry the failed operation.
  • Corrupt files could not all be fixed: review the CBS log, reassess DISM and the repair source, or use Windows Recovery Environment.
  • Could not perform the requested operation: Microsoft recommends trying Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment.

SFC repairs protected Windows system files; it does not repair arbitrary personal documents, archives, or application installers. See Microsoft’s current SFC steps at Using System File Checker in Windows.

3. Check the file system with CHKDSK

In an elevated Command Prompt, run the normal logical-error repair:

chkdsk C: /f

If Windows says the drive is in use, type Y to schedule the check and restart. The deeper option is:

Rank #3
chkdsk C: /f /r

/r checks for bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information, so it can take substantially longer. On a visibly failing drive, protect or recover data before subjecting it to prolonged reads. CHKDSK can repair logical file-system errors and report bad sectors; it cannot make physically deteriorating storage reliable.

Drive letters can change in Windows Recovery Environment or setup. Identify the Windows volume first rather than blindly using C:. An offline repair also requires offline DISM syntax; /Online in recovery targets the currently running recovery environment, not necessarily the installed Windows copy.

Retry Windows Update

  1. Restart the computer after DISM, SFC, and any scheduled disk check.
  2. Open Settings, go to Windows Update, and choose Check for updates or retry the failed update.
  3. If it fails again, record the KB number and complete message.
  4. Search Settings for the Windows Update troubleshooter; menu names vary slightly by Windows version.

Microsoft’s current update guidance is available at Troubleshoot problems updating Windows. Some non-Microsoft antivirus and other filter drivers can interfere with update file access. As a controlled test, follow the security vendor’s instructions to temporarily disable or uninstall that software, then re-enable or reinstall protection immediately.

When setup reports corrupt or missing files

  1. Download Windows media only from Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page or the linked installation-media instructions.
  2. Use the Media Creation Tool or an official ISO with a blank USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. Creating media erases the USB.
  3. Try a different USB drive and a directly connected port, avoiding an unpowered hub.
  4. Confirm that setup sees the intended target drive correctly before deleting partitions.
  5. If fresh official media fails at unpredictable points, stop repeatedly downloading the same installer and investigate the target SSD/HDD, USB controller, cables, and system memory.

The Windows 11 Media Creation Tool creates media for x64 processors; Microsoft says it cannot create media for Arm-based PCs. Do not treat the x64 tool as universal. Windows 10 reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025, so upgrade decisions in 2026 should account for that status.

If the error occurs while copying or opening files

  • Try the same operation with another source or destination drive.
  • Replace the USB cable or use another port.
  • Check source and destination separately; corruption on either can produce the code.
  • If only one downloaded archive or installer fails, download it again from the original publisher.
  • If unrelated files become unreadable, back up immediately and assess drive health.

DISM and SFC are not general-purpose personal-file recovery tools.

When to investigate hardware or seek recovery help

Hardware becomes more likely when official media fails repeatedly, failures occur at different points, files corrupt in unrelated locations, the drive disappears or freezes, or the PC also crashes or reports memory errors. Test or replace the USB drive, SSD/HDD, cable, port, or RAM as appropriate; the error code alone cannot identify which component is defective.

If important data exists only on a clicking, grinding, overheating, or intermittently detected drive, consult a professional recovery service before running CHKDSK or reinstalling. For software failures after backup, Windows Recovery Environment, a compatible local DISM source, an in-place repair installation, or a reset/clean installation are escalation options.

What not to do

  • Do not assume every occurrence means the hard drive is dead.
  • Do not run SFC before DISM when following Microsoft’s documented repair order.
  • Do not use registry cleaners, generic driver-updater subscriptions, or unofficial ISO mirrors.
  • Do not treat a successful SFC or CHKDSK result as proof that failing hardware or bad installation media is fixed.
  • Do not make disabling security software permanent; use it only as a controlled test.

Does 0x80070570 mean my hard drive is dead?

No. Corrupt update files, installation media, USB connections, file-system errors, filter drivers, RAM, and storage hardware can all produce the symptom. Repeated corruption or drive instability warrants hardware testing.

Should I run SFC or DISM first?

Run DISM first, then run sfc /scannow. DISM repairs the component store that SFC relies on.

Can CHKDSK delete my files?

CHKDSK is intended to repair file-system structures, but any repair scan carries risk on unstable storage. Verify your backup first, and seek recovery help when data is irreplaceable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will reinstalling Windows always fix this error?

No. Reinstallation can replace damaged software, but it will not fix bad USB media, failing storage, unstable RAM, or a bad connection. Back up before considering it.

What if DISM and SFC both fail?

Move to a compatible local repair source or Windows Recovery Environment, then consider an in-place repair or reinstall after backup. Persistent failures should prompt storage and hardware checks.
