Windows 8.1 with Bing was a preinstalled edition supplied on selected partner devices, mainly to help manufacturers offer lower-cost Windows hardware. Microsoft described it as delivering the same experience as Windows 8.1 Update, with one stated distinction: Bing was the default search provider in Internet Explorer. That default could be changed. Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023, so computers still running this edition no longer receive Microsoft security updates or technical support.
What Windows 8.1 with Bing actually was
Microsoft announced the edition on May 23, 2014, as part of an effort to help hardware partners build less expensive Windows devices. It was intended to be preloaded by hardware partners, not downloaded as a separate consumer edition. Microsoft said it provided the same experiences as Windows 8.1 Update, while Internet Explorer used Bing as its default search engine. (Microsoft announcement, May 23, 2014)
The Bing setting applied to Internet Explorer specifically. It did not mean that Windows forced Bing on every browser, and users could select another search provider through Internet Explorer’s settings or menu.
Windows 8.1 with Bing versus regular Windows 8.1 Update
| Feature | Windows 8.1 with Bing | Windows 8.1 Update |
|---|---|---|
| How it was distributed | Preloaded only on participating hardware-partner devices | Microsoft’s standard Windows 8.1 Update experience |
| Default search provider | Bing in Internet Explorer; changeable by the user | Not defined by the Bing-edition announcement |
| Core Windows experience | Microsoft said it was the same as Windows 8.1 Update | Windows 8.1 Update |
| Separate consumer download | Not described by Microsoft as a standalone download | Not applicable |
Can you remove Bing?
You do not need to remove Windows to stop using Bing. Open Internet Explorer’s settings or add-on management area, view the available search providers, and select another provider as the default. This changes Internet Explorer’s search behavior; it does not convert the installation into another Windows edition. The Microsoft announcement’s distinction concerns Internet Explorer, not every browser installed on the computer.

Is Windows 8.1 with Bing still supported?
No. Microsoft ended Windows 8.1 support on January 10, 2023. The computer can continue to start and run existing programs, but Microsoft no longer supplies security updates, software updates, or technical support for the operating system. Microsoft also says there is no Extended Security Update program for Windows 8.1. (Microsoft Support)
An antivirus product cannot replace fixes for vulnerabilities in the operating system itself. An unsupported Windows 8.1 computer is therefore a poor choice for routine internet-connected work, online banking, handling sensitive files, or other activities where unpatched flaws could matter.

What should an owner do now?
1. Check whether the hardware can run a supported Windows release
Microsoft’s current guidance says there is no free upgrade path from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 or Windows 11. Check the computer against the system requirements for the version you are considering, and verify that the applications, drivers, and peripherals you rely on are supported. Microsoft’s guidance notes that Windows 8.1-era PCs are unlikely to meet Windows 11 requirements. (Microsoft Support)
2. Plan for a replacement when the machine is not eligible
If the hardware cannot run a supported Windows version, Microsoft recommends moving to a new Windows 11-capable PC. Before changing machines, back up personal files, identify software that must be reinstalled, and confirm that you have the required licenses or account access. Compatibility and licensing depend on the individual computer and software; Microsoft’s general support page does not establish eligibility for a particular device.

3. Treat continued use as a risk-managed exception
If an old device must remain in service temporarily, keep sensitive activity off it, limit network exposure, maintain current backups, and avoid assuming that an antivirus installation makes an unsupported operating system secure. These precautions reduce exposure but do not restore Microsoft’s security support.
What happened to Store apps?
Microsoft says installed Microsoft Store apps and games can continue to be used, but new purchases and in-app purchases ended on January 10, 2023. Microsoft also stated that publisher updates for installed Store apps and games were available through June 30, 2023, unless an individual developer continued support independently. That policy is not a guarantee that every app still works or receives updates today. (Microsoft Support)

Historical example: Toshiba Encore Mini
One device announced with Windows 8.1 with Bing was Toshiba’s Encore Mini, a 7-inch tablet. Microsoft’s September 2014 announcement said it supported additional microSD storage of up to 128 GB. Those are launch-era specifications for a historical model, not evidence of current availability or a recommendation to buy one. Confirm the exact tablet model and its storage limits before purchasing any card; extra storage does not make an unsupported operating system secure. (Microsoft, September 3, 2014)

Bottom line for 2026
Windows 8.1 with Bing was essentially Windows 8.1 Update on partner hardware, with Bing preselected only for Internet Explorer and with that choice changeable. The meaningful issue today is not the search engine: support ended in 2023. Check the device’s compatibility with a supported Windows release, and replace it with a Windows 11-capable computer when it cannot be upgraded safely.
