The Windows 11 setting behind the “two clicks” security headline is Administrator protection. It changes how administrator elevation works by keeping everyday activity in a reduced-privilege context and requiring deliberate, temporary approval for administrative tasks.
That can reduce exposure to privilege-escalation attacks, token reuse and some automatic-elevation paths. However, the real process involves several navigation steps, a restart and compatibility testing—and the feature may not yet appear on every Windows 11 PC.
What Windows 11 Administrator protection does
Traditional Windows administrator accounts let users work normally while retaining the ability to obtain elevated privileges through User Account Control (UAC). That model is useful, but a compromised administrator session can give malware more opportunities to find or reuse privileged processes and tokens.

Administrator protection is designed to harden that model. Ordinary work runs with reduced privileges, while an administrative action requires interactive authorization. The elevated operation is intended to use a temporary, system-managed administrative context that is separated from the user’s normal profile rather than simply turning the entire session into a permanently privileged environment.

Windows Hello—such as a PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition where configured—is intended to make these approvals more convenient. The goal is not to eliminate UAC, nor does it guarantee protection from every escalation technique. It reduces the attack surface associated with persistent or implicit administrator access.
Why this can improve security
- Less persistent elevation: everyday applications spend less time operating with administrator privileges.
- Fewer opportunities for token abuse: separating administrative work from the ordinary user context may make privileged tokens and processes harder to reuse.
- More deliberate approvals: administrative actions are more likely to require an explicit credential or Windows Hello confirmation.
- Reduced profile exposure: a separated administrative context can behave differently from the user’s normal profile, limiting some persistence and data-access paths.
These are meaningful security improvements for privilege-related threats, not a blanket guarantee that Windows is now safe. Administrator protection does not replace Microsoft Defender, security updates, phishing resistance, multifactor authentication, backups or careful prompt handling.
How to enable Administrator protection
On a Windows 11 installation where the feature is available:

- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Account protection.
- Find Administrator protection and switch it on.
- Restart the PC when Windows prompts you to do so.
The consumer-facing path is reported in coverage from WindowsForum. The “two clicks” description comes from the original Pocket-lint headline; it is shorthand for a simple toggle, not a literal description of the complete procedure.
If the option is missing
Do not assume that your PC is faulty. Availability can depend on the Windows 11 edition, servicing or build level, Microsoft’s rollout status and whether the device is managed by an organization. Preview channels and unusual configurations may also expose different controls.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Restart the computer and check Windows Security → Account protection again.
- Check your Windows edition and build in Settings → System → About.
- If it is a work or school PC, ask the administrator whether Group Policy or mobile-device management controls the feature.
- Avoid random Registry edits or third-party utilities claiming to unlock it.
What changes after you turn it on
Expect more visible friction around administrative actions. Windows may request a Windows Hello approval or other credentials more often, and you may see fewer silent or automatic elevation paths. Treat that as a security feature, not an invitation to approve every prompt.

Only approve an elevation request when you initiated the action and understand which application is requesting it. Prompt fatigue can undermine the protection if users automatically confirm unexpected requests.

Check the following after the restart:
- A normal application that requires administrator approval.
- Your commonly used installers and software updaters.
- Driver and hardware utilities.
- Backup and disk-management tools.
- Mapped network drives and network-share installers.
- Developer tools, WSL, Hyper-V and virtual-machine workflows.
- Scripts, automation and remote-management tools.
One successful test does not prove that every administrative workflow is compatible.

Who should enable it now?

For a personal PC, enable it when the setting is available and you can tolerate testing a few important applications. For a business, pilot it on representative machines before applying it widely. Enterprise configuration may involve Group Policy or Intune/MDM, but policy names and supported builds can change, so administrators should consult current Microsoft documentation rather than copying policy settings from forum posts.

Elevated software cannot see a mapped drive
Mapped drives and network credentials can exist in the ordinary user context without being visible to an elevated process. This is a possible compatibility issue, not a guaranteed failure on every PC.
Try copying the installer locally, entering credentials when appropriate, or using a properly packaged deployment method. Do not disable the protection across the computer simply because one installer expects the old behavior.

WSL, Hyper-V or virtual machines stop working correctly
These workflows may depend on particular elevation, service or credential assumptions. Test them on a non-production machine, record the original configuration and verify your toolchain before enabling the feature across a development fleet.
A script or updater fails
Unattended tasks may not be able to respond to an interactive approval request. Look for a supported deployment or service configuration instead of granting broad permanent elevation to the task.
How to roll back
If a critical application fails, return to Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security → Account protection → Administrator protection and switch the setting off if that control is still presented there. Restart Windows, then retest the affected workflow.
Because availability and labels can vary by build, the exact rollback experience may differ. Before enabling the feature on an important machine, document its original state and make sure you have another administrator account or a suitable recovery route. Disable the feature only as a targeted troubleshooting step; investigate and remediate the incompatible application where possible.
What Administrator protection does not protect against
- Phishing, malicious links or harmful documents.
- Stolen passwords or compromised online accounts.
- Unpatched Windows and third-party applications.
- Data loss, ransomware or accidental deletion without reliable backups.
- Every form of malware running in a standard user session.
- Account takeover caused by weak authentication.
Keep Windows and applications updated, leave Microsoft Defender and its tamper protections enabled, use Windows Hello or another phishing-resistant sign-in method, remove unnecessary local-admin membership and maintain offline or versioned backups.
