Yes—Microsoft Photos has a genuine OCR feature called Scan Text. It can recognize text in screenshots, scans, receipts, labels, and other images, then let you select and copy the result. However, Microsoft introduced it through staged Windows Insider rollouts, so the button may not be available on every Windows 11 PC or Photos installation.
What Photos OCR does
OCR, or optical character recognition, converts text stored as image pixels into selectable characters. Instead of manually typing a quotation from a photographed page, for example, you can ask Photos to recognize it and copy the result into Notepad, Word, an email, or another app.
It can be useful for screenshots, photographed documents, Wi-Fi labels, receipts, printed notes, and short passages of text. OCR does not guarantee perfect formatting: columns, tables, line breaks, punctuation, handwriting, and unusual fonts may need correction.

How to use “Scan Text” in Photos
- Open the image in the current Microsoft Photos app.
- Look along the bottom toolbar of the image viewer for Scan Text or its OCR icon.
- Select Scan Text and wait while Photos analyzes the image.
- When the text overlay appears, select all or part of the recognized text.
- Copy it, then paste it into the destination app.
The March 2025 update also added Search in Web for selected recognized text. That is separate from copying: it sends the selected text into an online web-search workflow, so do not use it for sensitive information unless you are comfortable with that action.
Which Windows and Photos versions support it?
Microsoft’s original October 2024 announcement described OCR for Windows 11 and Windows 10 PCs, but the feature was rolled out through Windows Insider channels rather than promised as an immediate universal stable-release feature. The revised March 2025 experience listed Photos version 2025.11030.20006.0 or later. An earlier announcement listed version 2024.11100.17007.0 or later.
These are Microsoft’s documented version thresholds for those rollouts. Microsoft may change the app version and availability after those announcements, and the cited sources do not establish universal stable-channel availability as of September 2026.

Microsoft did not list a Copilot+ PC requirement for Photos OCR in the cited announcement. Copilot+ hardware requirements in that release applied to separate features such as Super Resolution, not OCR. Do not confuse Photos OCR with semantic photo search, automatic categorization, or other newer AI features.
Update Photos before troubleshooting
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Choose Get updates.
- Install any available Microsoft Photos update.
- Fully close and reopen Photos, then open the image again.
You can check the installed app version from Windows’ installed-app settings or the Microsoft Store listing. The current Photos app is the relevant one; Photos Legacy is a separate older application and should not be assumed to have the same features. Microsoft has documented the distinction between the two apps in its Photos rollout documentation.
Why Scan Text may be missing
You are viewing a thumbnail, not the image viewer
Open the image fully in Photos. The OCR control is described as part of the image viewer, not the gallery, thumbnail grid, or an image preview inside another application.

Your Photos build has not received the feature
Updating the app does not guarantee that the feature will appear. Microsoft described the OCR releases as staged Insider rollouts, and not every Insider received them immediately. If the button remains absent after updating, the feature may not be enabled for your Windows release, Insider channel, or particular installation.

You are using Photos Legacy
Check that you opened the current Microsoft Photos app rather than Photos Legacy. The names and icons can be confusing because both may be installed.
The image contains no detectable text
In the revised experience, Microsoft changed the OCR button so it could appear on every image and report when no text was detected. Therefore, seeing the button does not mean every photograph will produce usable text.

The image is difficult to read
Try a sharper, brighter image with straight lines of text and strong contrast. OCR commonly struggles with tiny or compressed text, glare, motion blur, patterned backgrounds, curved labels, angled pages, illustrations mixed with text, multiple columns, tables, and handwriting.
What not to do: registry “unlock” guides
Some third-party reports described registry values intended to expose an experimental Photos OCR feature. Such reports are not the same as a Microsoft-supported activation procedure. The method may stop working as Photos changes and could create support or rollback problems.

Update Photos through the Microsoft Store first. Avoid modified Photos packages, replaced system files, and unofficial downloads. If Photos itself is malfunctioning, Windows app repair may be safer than changing undocumented settings; use reset only with care because it can remove app settings.

OCR accuracy and privacy limitations
Proofread anything important. OCR can confuse similar characters such as O and 0, omit punctuation, merge lines, or misread accented characters. It is particularly unsuitable as an unquestioned transcription method for legal, financial, medical, or technical material.
There are also two separate privacy questions:
- Recognizing and copying: the cited Microsoft announcements do not establish that Photos OCR is entirely local, so do not assume a specific processing model.
- Search in Web: this is explicitly an online-search action involving the selected text. It should be treated differently from simply copying the OCR result.
Best alternatives when Photos OCR is unavailable

Snipping Tool
Windows 11’s Snipping Tool includes Text Actions for extracting text from screenshots. It is a practical fallback when the text is visible on screen. Microsoft discusses the feature in its Windows experiences announcement.
PowerToys Text Extractor
PowerToys Text Extractor is better suited to repeated screen OCR. It works across applications and can recognize text from images or video, but it is an additional utility rather than a built-in Photos workflow.
OneNote
OneNote can copy text from pictures and file printouts. It is useful when you want to preserve the source image with your notes or handle a multi-page printout.
Which option should you use?
- Use Photos Scan Text for occasional extraction from a saved image when the control is available.
- Use Snipping Tool for text currently visible on your screen.
- Use PowerToys Text Extractor if you perform screen OCR repeatedly.
- Use OneNote when extracted text needs to stay with images or document printouts.
- Choose dedicated document-OCR software for batch processing, searchable PDFs, layout preservation, structured forms, or audit-ready results.
The practical verdict is straightforward: Photos OCR is real, but “hidden” mainly describes its discoverability and staged availability—not a guaranteed secret switch. Check the current Photos app and its rollout status, try the supported viewer workflow, and use Snipping Tool or PowerToys if your installation has not received Scan Text.
