Microsoft is testing a tidier File Explorer right-click menu and optional background window preloading in Windows Insider builds—not announcing a feature for every Windows 11 PC. The menu changes regroup commands such as “Copy as Path” and “Compress to ZIP file”; preloading is intended to make Explorer open faster. Microsoft has not published speed-test results or confirmed that these experiments are in the stable Windows 11 release.
What changed—and who can use it?
Microsoft described the experiments in its November 21, 2025 announcement for Windows 11 Insider Preview builds 26100.7271 and 26200.7271. The changes were gradually rolling out to Insiders, so even an eligible build number did not guarantee that every PC would show them.
The announcement is not evidence that either feature reached the standard public release. Microsoft’s May 29, 2026 Insider update documented further File Explorer work, including context-menu keyboard navigation, but did not confirm these November experiments as generally available. Treat both as Insider features unless Microsoft confirms a stable-release rollout.

The experiment aims to reduce clutter in the first-level menu by placing less frequently used actions in flyouts. Microsoft called the new group Manage file, while noting its name could change. The announced locations were:

In practice, a local image may show image-related actions, while a OneDrive-synced file may have cloud controls. Folders, executables, scripts, permissions, installed apps, and third-party shell extensions can all affect which commands appear and where. The redesign is a further refinement, not the original Windows 11 context-menu change: Windows 11 already uses a streamlined menu, and older extension commands may still be under Show more options, as Microsoft’s File Explorer support page explains.
The practical trade-off is straightforward: a shorter main menu may be easier to scan, but familiar actions can take an extra click. Users who often copy paths, make ZIP files, or rotate images may need to adjust their muscle memory. Third-party commands can remain inconsistent, including commands that appear only in the legacy menu.

What Explorer preloading does
Preloading prepares an Explorer window in the background before you open one—for example with Windows key + E, the taskbar icon, or by opening a folder. Its intended benefit is a quicker-feeling launch, without a visible Explorer window appearing beforehand.
Microsoft did not publish launch-time measurements or figures for memory, CPU, storage, or battery impact. Background preparation may use some resources, but the announcement does not quantify any cost. It is not justified to promise a particular speed improvement or claim a specific resource penalty without testing the relevant PC.

How to turn preloading off
If your Insider installation has received the experiment, open File Explorer > Folder Options > View. Clear Enable window preloading for faster launch times, then select Apply and OK. To enable it again, select the checkbox.
The setting may be absent even on a named Insider build because availability is gradual. Check your build in Settings > System > About or run winver. Check your channel under Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, install any available Insider updates, and allow time for a staged rollout. Do not assume a missing checkbox means Windows is broken; the official instructions do not require a Registry edit or third-party enabling utility.

How to assess whether it helps your PC
If you have the toggle and want to decide whether to keep it, compare it on your own system rather than relying on a single launch:

- Note your Windows build, available memory, storage type, and whether cloud-storage integrations are active.
- After a restart, open Explorer several times and note how it feels immediately after sign-in and again after a long idle period.
- Turn preloading off, apply the setting, and repeat under similar conditions.
- Compare repeated launches, not just one opening. Keep other conditions as consistent as practical.
This is a personal comparison, not a controlled benchmark: network shares, large folders, cloud providers, background activity, and warm versus cold launches can change the result. If you are on a memory-constrained device or simply prefer less background activity, disabling the option is a reasonable choice. The setting lets you make that trade-off where the experiment is available.

If the menu or option is missing
- Confirm the build and channel: use
winveror Settings, then check Windows Insider Program status. - Check for updates and staged availability: eligible builds may not receive every experiment at the same time.
- Look for older commands: try Show more options for legacy or extension-provided actions.
- Consider what you selected: menus vary by file type, cloud provider, permissions, and installed shell extensions.
For an Insider-specific bug, Microsoft’s announcement directed feedback to Feedback Hub categories including Desktop Environment > Right-Click Context Menu and Files, Folders and Online Storage > File Explorer Performance/File Explorer. Because these are experiments, menu placement and labels may change, and visual, keyboard, or compatibility issues are possible. Microsoft’s May 2026 note about improved keyboard navigation reflects continuing Explorer work; it should not be mistaken for confirmation that the preloading experiment shipped to all users.
