Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27729 arrived in the Canary Channel on October 17, 2024. Its main addition was a Snipping Tool option called “Copy as table,” alongside fixes for some game crashes, an Alt+Tab black-screen problem, and a BitLocker issue. It also came with serious known risks, including display failures on some older NVIDIA GPUs. Build 27729 is now a historical, superseded preview—not a current installation target.

Build 27729 was an Insider preview, not a general Windows 11 release. It followed earlier Canary builds including 27718 and was followed by build 27744. Canary builds expose early platform work and are not tied to a specific future retail release. Features can change, be removed, or never ship broadly.
Microsoft’s Build 27729 announcement is the source for its feature, fixes, and known issues. The build chronology has moved on substantially since then; Build 27729 should be treated as a historical reference.
Snipping Tool’s “Copy as table” explained
The build’s headline feature was an update to Snipping Tool, version 11.2409.23.0 or newer. After capturing a screenshot containing a table, users could open Text actions and select Copy as table. The copied content was intended to retain a table-like structure when pasted into a spreadsheet, email, or document, instead of becoming one unstructured block of recognized text.

- Paste the result into a spreadsheet, email, or document, then check it against the image.
Microsoft said the feature worked best when the screenshot contained one table. Clear, high-contrast images with simple rows and columns are a better fit than blurry screenshots, merged cells, complex layouts, or several tables surrounded by page text. Check column boundaries, row alignment, punctuation, decimal points, dates, and totals before using the extracted data. This is OCR-assisted extraction, not a guarantee of spreadsheet-perfect results.
The app update was rolling out to Canary and Dev Insiders, so installing Build 27729 did not guarantee that the option would appear immediately on every device. Microsoft also uses staged feature rollouts, meaning two devices on the same build can show different features. The announcement did not describe “Copy as table” as a new Windows-wide OCR engine.
What Build 27729 fixed
- Some game crashes: Microsoft fixed an underlying issue that caused some games, including Microsoft Solitaire & Casual Games, to crash on launch after installing Build 27718 or later. The note did not promise to resolve every game crash.
- Alt+Tab black screen: The build addressed a problem that could leave some users looking at a black screen for several seconds when switching apps with Alt+Tab.
- BitLocker: Microsoft fixed an issue that had prevented BitLocker from working correctly for a small number of Insiders in the previous two flights. This was not a blanket guarantee against all BitLocker problems.
These fixes were useful, but they did not make the build a general performance update or remove the significant risks in its known-issues list.
Known issues that mattered
Most consequential warning: some older NVIDIA GPUs could leave the display black or unresponsive. Microsoft cited examples including the GeForce GTX 970 and Quadro K620. Affected systems could also show GPU errors in Device Manager or have a graphics adapter that did not work correctly. This warning applied to some older GPUs, not all NVIDIA cards. Microsoft’s release notes advised using Windows Recovery to roll back to the previous build if the system became unusable, then pausing updates while waiting for a fix.

- Windows Hello on a specific Copilot+ PC transition: Microsoft warned that moving a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel, or retail Windows into Canary could cause the PIN and biometric sign-in to stop working. The reported message was “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available,” with error
0xd0000225. Microsoft said the PIN could be recreated using Set up my PIN. This warning was about that channel-transition scenario, not every Copilot+ PC. Keep a working account password and recovery method available. - Installation rollbacks: Some Insiders reported rollbacks while installing Canary builds, with error
0xc190010identified in the announcement. That code is not a universal diagnosis. A failed upgrade is different from a successful update followed by a driver or app problem; back up important data and avoid repeated attempts without checking free disk space and recovery options. - System bugcheck: Microsoft was investigating crashes with
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, an operating-system bugcheck reported to have begun with Build 27723. The release note did not identify one definitive cause or a universal command-line fix. If affected, prioritize recovery and data protection rather than speculative registry changes. - Emoji Panel and Clipboard History: Microsoft was investigating failures to open these features in certain surfaces, including Registry Editor. The report did not say that the Emoji Panel or Win+V failed everywhere.
For the older NVIDIA issue, Microsoft also noted a release-window-specific update-pause detail: people who had paused updates on Build 27723 might need to unpause and re-pause updates to avoid taking Build 27729 while remaining on Build 27718. That was historical guidance for that point in the Canary flight sequence, not current Windows Update advice.
Was Build 27729 worth installing?
In October 2024, it made sense only for controlled testing. A tester might have installed it to assess table extraction, check whether the cited game crashes or Alt+Tab behavior were fixed, or test BitLocker in a noncritical environment. The older NVIDIA graphics warning, possible installation rollbacks, system bugcheck, and specific Windows Hello transition risk were material reasons not to put it on a production workstation or a primary gaming PC.
In 2026, there is no reason to seek out Build 27729 as a current update. It has been superseded by much newer Insider development. Use Microsoft’s Flight Hub to check current build information and follow current Insider guidance rather than relying on a two-year-old preview.

Keep backups, another sign-in method, and recovery options ready. Do not rely on an experimental preview for a device holding irreplaceable data.

Recovery and leaving Canary
If a preview system becomes unusable, use Windows Recovery to roll back where available rather than repeatedly trying to start the faulty installation. Microsoft’s documented Insider ISO process can be used for an in-place installation: download the chosen Insider ISO, mount it in File Explorer, run setup.exe, choose to keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps, then verify enrollment under Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. The relevant instructions are in Microsoft’s Insider ISO guide.
A clean install is more destructive: Microsoft warns it erases files, settings, and applications. Back up first; from the mounted ISO, run setup.exe, choose Change what to keep, then select Nothing. Microsoft also documents bootable USB installation, including a USB drive of at least 8 GB; its contents are erased, so back them up before preparing the drive.
Leaving Canary can carry its own cost. If the target channel has a lower build number than the installed Canary build, switching back may require a clean Windows installation. Check channel and build compatibility before enrolling; do not assume that changing a setting will provide a simple downgrade without data loss.

What the release means in context
Build 27729 was principally a Snipping Tool feature update paired with targeted fixes—not a broad Windows shell redesign. “Copy as table” offered a practical shortcut for turning a screenshot into pasteable structured content, but availability was staged and the result needed verification. For testers, the more important decision was whether the value of trying it outweighed the build’s graphics, installation, and stability risks.
