Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.2130 was a Dev Channel preview released on October 18, 2024 as KB5044400. Based on Windows 11 version 24H2, it introduced a controller-friendly on-screen keyboard, several Narrator improvements, clearer Unicode Wi-Fi network names in a command-line tool, and a collection of reliability fixes.
It was not a normal retail Windows update. Features were gradually rolled out, and Microsoft listed known taskbar and Start menu problems. As of September 2026, Build 26120.2130 is a historical Insider build rather than a current installation target.

Microsoft’s release announcement divided the changes between features and fixes that were gradually rolled out to some Dev Channel users and changes made available more broadly within the channel. Therefore, two PCs showing the same build number might not have displayed every feature at the same time.

Key features in Build 26120.2130
“All apps” was renamed “All”
Microsoft changed the Start menu label All apps to All. This was a small terminology and interface adjustment, not a new application-management system or a major Start menu redesign. Like other Insider changes in this build, it might not have appeared immediately for every user.

New Gamepad keyboard layout
The on-screen keyboard began receiving a Gamepad layout designed for navigation with an Xbox controller. The keys were arranged vertically to better suit controller movement, and Microsoft added button accelerators:
- X acts as Backspace.
- Y inserts a Space.
This could help users operate a living-room PC, a gaming computer connected to a television, or a system used with alternative input methods. It was not presented as a complete replacement for a physical keyboard and mouse, however. It was an early rollout of a controller-oriented typing interface.
Narrator could copy its most recently spoken text
Build 26120.2130 added the shortcut:
Narrator key + Control + XIt copies the content Narrator most recently spoke to the clipboard. This can be useful for descriptions, codes, numbers, or interface text that is difficult to select normally.

Narrator support for new Outlook mail
Narrator began automatically reading mail contents in the new Outlook app, in a way Microsoft described as similar to existing behavior in classic Outlook. This was an accessibility improvement, not an AI-generated summary feature. The release announcement does not establish identical behavior for every message view, message type, or language.

netsh wlan show networksAs a result, network names containing Unicode characters or emojis could be displayed more accurately in command-line output. This helped with troubleshooting and network inventory, but it did not rename networks, improve wireless performance, add a new Wi-Fi standard, or guarantee correct display in every third-party tool.
Fixes and why they mattered
Reliability fixes
- Sign-in after sleep: Microsoft fixed a problem affecting some Insiders where locking a PC and waking it from sleep could leave the login screen contents unloaded, preventing sign-in.
- Live Captions: The build fixed a crash affecting some users when launching or using Live Captions after the previous preview flight. The release note did not claim improved caption accuracy or new language support.
Clipboard and taskbar fixes
- Clipboard history: Copied items could fail to appear in clipboard history; this issue was addressed.
- Taskbar window switching: With multiple windows open for one application, repeatedly pressing a shortcut such as Windows key + 1 did not always cycle through that application’s windows. Microsoft fixed the reported behavior, but the shortcut was not guaranteed to cycle every window in every taskbar configuration.
The clipboard-history fix was separate from the new Narrator shortcut. One repaired missing items in the clipboard history interface; the other added a new way to copy text spoken by Narrator.
Narrator accessibility fixes
The build addressed several Narrator issues:
- Narrator could become slower after about 15 minutes of continuous use with a single application.
- It could unnecessarily announce “contains style” when focus was on styled text, including bulleted and numbered text.
- Some dialogs did not properly follow Windows’ 200% text-scaling setting.
These changes were particularly important for screen-reader users and people who rely on large text. Microsoft still asked users who experienced performance delays to report them through Feedback Hub, so the fixes should not be interpreted as a guarantee of perfect long-session performance.
Mica with slideshow backgrounds
Microsoft fixed an issue in which the Mica visual effect did not work correctly when a slideshow was used as the desktop background. This was a targeted visual fix, not a general graphics-driver or desktop-composition overhaul.
Known issues
Taskbar-related explorer.exe crashes
Microsoft was investigating reports that explorer.exe could crash when users hovered over certain open applications in the taskbar. The taskbar or other parts of the Windows shell might disappear and reload. Explorer restarting does not necessarily mean that the entire PC has crashed, but repeated shell crashes are a serious reason to avoid a Dev Channel build on a primary work computer.

Selecting a letter in the Start menu’s application list could cause the list to stop working correctly. Microsoft’s suggested recovery actions were to reboot the PC or restart Windows Explorer.

To restart Windows Explorer:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
Task Manager labels can vary slightly by Windows build and language. If restarting Explorer does not help, reboot the PC as Microsoft recommended.

Build 26120.2130 did not guarantee an identical experience for every Insider. Microsoft gradually enabled some features and fixes for users who had turned on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available, while other changes rolled out more broadly to the Dev Channel.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting. If another computer had the Gamepad keyboard, the shorter Start menu label, or a Narrator change while yours did not, the difference was not necessarily an installation failure. Insider features could also be changed, removed, replaced, or never released outside testing.

Before installing any Insider preview, back up important files, avoid using a critical production computer, and keep recovery media or a known-good backup available. Rollback options depend on the build, installation timing, retained recovery files, and device state, so an easy return is not guaranteed.
Is Build 26120.2130 still relevant?
Build 26120.2130 is useful as a record of Windows 11 24H2 development and for researchers investigating the history of Insider features. It is not the latest Windows 11 preview and should not be treated as a current download target in 2026. Microsoft’s current Insider release notes provide the appropriate reference for newer builds. Microsoft has also since changed its Insider channel and build structure, as described in its later channel transition announcement and June 2026 build announcement.
Most importantly, the features in this preview were not guaranteed to ship in stable Windows. A feature appearing in an Insider build does not by itself prove that it became part of every retail Windows 11 installation.
Verdict
Build 26120.2130 was a modest, practical Dev Channel flight rather than a major Windows redesign. Its standout change was the Gamepad keyboard layout, while its Narrator updates improved accessibility workflows and its fixes addressed several real usability problems. The documented taskbar and Start menu issues, staged rollout, and preview-only status made it suitable for testing—not for users seeking a predictable everyday installation.
