Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4660 was a small Beta Channel release issued on January 3, 2025, as KB5048808. Based on Windows 11 version 23H2, it focused on usability and accessibility rather than introducing a major redesign.
The build began rolling out clearer labels for File Explorer context-menu commands, added easier Magnifier zoom resets, started disabling Suggested Actions, and included general File Explorer performance and reliability fixes. It was an Insider preview—not a stable update for all Windows 11 users—and feature availability could vary between PCs.

Microsoft’s official announcement described a focused release with changes in four areas: File Explorer usability, Magnifier accessibility, the deprecation of Suggested Actions, and general File Explorer reliability.
As of August 18, 2026, Build 22635.4660 is historical. It should not be treated as the current Windows 11 release or as a guaranteed preview of features that reached general availability.

File Explorer context-menu commands get labels
Build 22635.4660 began rolling out text labels for several common File Explorer context-menu actions:
- Cut
- Copy
- Paste
- Rename
- Share
- Delete
These commands had previously been represented primarily by icons in the modern context menu. The change did not add new File Explorer capabilities. Instead, it made existing commands easier to identify, particularly for people who do not immediately recognize the icons or who use touch and accessibility features.
In practical terms, the update changed how clearly File Explorer presented familiar commands—not what those commands could do.
Why the labels might not appear
Microsoft listed the File Explorer labels as a gradually rolled-out feature. Beta Channel users who enabled the setting to receive the latest updates as soon as they were available had a better chance of seeing the experiment, but activation was not necessarily immediate or universal.
Later, Microsoft reported in its announcement for Build 22635.5170 that the context-menu label change had been disabled. That later status is important historical context: the labels were an Insider experiment, not a permanent design commitment.

Magnifier adds easier zoom reset controls
The release also began rolling out new on-screen Magnifier controls for resetting zoom. The controls allowed users to:
- Return the view to a fit-to-screen magnification.
- Return to their last or preferred magnification.
This was an accessibility and usability improvement, not the introduction of Magnifier itself or a new magnification engine. Users who regularly switch between a highly magnified view and a full-screen view could avoid repeatedly adjusting the zoom level.

Microsoft also referenced the existing Ctrl + Alt + Minus shortcut, which switches between the current zoom level and 1× zoom. That keyboard shortcut was not new in Build 22635.4660; the new change added easier on-screen reset options.
The official announcement did not establish a final universal label for each button, so the controls should be described by their function rather than by unverified interface wording.

Suggested Actions begins its exit
Build 22635.4660 began the deprecation of Suggested Actions. This Windows feature could appear after users copied certain content, such as phone numbers or future dates, and offer contextual actions based on what had been copied.
In this release, Microsoft said it was beginning to disable the feature. That makes Suggested Actions’ change a product-direction update rather than a new capability. Users who relied on copy-and-act prompts might see fewer suggestions after moving to the build.
“Deprecated” should not be interpreted as proof that every PC lost the feature immediately. Insider functionality could be disabled progressively, and different systems could receive different behavior while Microsoft monitored feedback.
Microsoft did not state in the announcement why Suggested Actions was being deprecated. Explanations such as usage, privacy, or interface-design concerns should therefore be treated as speculation rather than confirmed reasons.

The announcement did not provide a detailed issue-by-issue list. It did not identify specific crashes, search failures, slow folder-loading scenarios, or context-menu hangs. The most accurate description is therefore limited to the official wording: Build 22635.4660 included File Explorer performance and reliability fixes.
That distinction matters because preview-release summaries often turn broad changelog language into specific bug claims that Microsoft did not actually document.

Build 22635.4660 used Microsoft’s staged rollout model. The Beta Channel announcement separated changes into two groups:
- Features, improvements, and fixes gradually rolled out to Insiders who enabled the option to receive the latest updates as soon as they were available.
- Features, improvements, and fixes rolling out to everyone in the Beta Channel.
The relevant Windows Update path was:
Settings → Windows Update → Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available

Microsoft could expand a gradual rollout over time while collecting feedback. As a result, installing the same build number did not guarantee an identical interface on every PC.

This rollout model also explains why an Insider could install Build 22635.4660 but not immediately see the File Explorer labels or Magnifier controls. The missing feature did not necessarily indicate a failed installation.
What to check if a feature is missing
- Open Settings → System → About and confirm that the installed OS build is 22635.4660.
- Open Settings → Windows Update and check for pending updates or a required restart.
- Review the Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available setting.
- Restart the PC after installing the update.
- Allow time for staged activation; enabling the setting does not guarantee immediate access.
- Remember that Microsoft could withdraw, replace, or change an Insider feature.
These checks cannot force an experiment to appear. They only help distinguish staged availability from a version or installation problem.
Should you have installed Build 22635.4660?
At release, the build made sense for Windows Insiders, accessibility testers, developers, technical writers, and enthusiasts who wanted to evaluate upcoming Windows behavior and provide feedback through Feedback Hub.

Preview features may also have incomplete localization or never ship in a public Windows release.
For ordinary Windows 11 users, this was not a normal production update delivered through the stable servicing channel. As of 2026, there is no practical reason to seek out this historical build merely for everyday use.
What this build really changed
Build 22635.4660 was modest, but its changes had distinct implications:
- Usability: File Explorer commands became more discoverable through text labels.
- Accessibility: Magnifier users gained simpler ways to switch between fit-to-screen and a preferred zoom level.
- Product direction: Suggested Actions began being phased out rather than expanded.
- Reliability: File Explorer received broadly described performance and reliability improvements.
- Testing model: Gradual rollout meant that the build number alone did not determine the complete user experience.
The most important limitation is that these were Insider changes. Microsoft explicitly warned that features could change, be removed, or never reach a public Windows release. The later disabling of the File Explorer labels reinforces that warning.
