Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4367 (KB5044373) arrived in the Beta Channel on October 11, 2024, based on Windows 11 version 23H2. Its main user-facing change was a way to share local files directly with compatible apps from File Explorer or the desktop; it also included several Start menu, Live Captions, and taskbar fixes. This was a focused preview update, not a major Windows feature release, and the new sharing option rolled out gradually rather than appearing for every tester at once.

Microsoft’s release announcement describes this as an Insider flight for testing changes, not a full Windows feature update. It is a historical preview build, not a current Windows 11 release.
Share a local file from File Explorer or the desktop
The headline change adds a direct route from a file’s context menu to applications that support sharing through Windows. The intended workflow is:

- Right-click the local file.
- Look for the option to share it with a compatible application.
- Select an app, then finish the process in that app’s sharing interface.
This saves steps when sending a file through an integrated email, messaging, cloud-storage, or collaboration app. Microsoft did not publish a definitive list of supported apps, so an app should appear only if it supports Windows sharing and is available in the relevant scenario.

The option may vary with the file, installed apps, account state, and rollout status. The announcement describes sharing local files; it does not promise identical behavior for files that exist only online or are handled through every third-party shell extension. Nor does the feature’s presence in an Insider build mean it was ready for general-release Windows.
Fixes in the update
- Start menu: Corrected unexpectedly large gaps between some entries in the All apps list.
- Live Captions: Addressed a launch crash that affected some Insiders on the previous two builds.
- Taskbar window cycling: Fixed an issue where repeatedly pressing Windows key plus a number did not cycle through multiple open windows for the corresponding app. For example, repeated Windows + 1 presses should cycle among windows associated with the first numbered taskbar shortcut when multiple windows are open.
- Uncombined taskbar buttons: For users who keep taskbar buttons uncombined, corrected cases where the app icon appeared unexpectedly instead of the relevant window icon beside its name.
These are targeted corrections, not new Start menu, captioning, or taskbar features. Microsoft’s announcement does not claim performance, battery-life, or compatibility improvements.

Why the sharing option might not appear
Microsoft used Control Feature Rollout (CFR), so Beta Channel users could see different behavior on the same build. The changes in this announcement were gradually rolling out to Insiders who had enabled Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. At the time, the setting was under Settings → Windows Update; labels and placement can change between Windows versions and languages.
Enabling the option made eligible testers among the first to receive staged features, but it did not guarantee immediate delivery to every device. If the Share option is missing, plausible reasons include:

- The controlled rollout has not reached the device.
- The update toggle is off.
- No installed app supports Windows sharing for that file.
- The file or app is outside the supported local-file scenario.
- The PC is on a different build or Insider channel.
Not seeing the option is not, by itself, evidence that Windows needs to be reinstalled or that a registry change is required. Microsoft’s release notes do not prescribe either as a fix. In addition, some features under active development may not be fully localized, so wording can differ by language.
Who should consider a Beta Channel build?
Build 22635.4367 may have been useful to testers evaluating Windows sharing integration, app developers checking how their software works with the share flow, enthusiasts comfortable with changing preview features, or users affected by one of the listed bugs.

It was a poor fit for a production PC that needs maximum stability, business-critical work, or guaranteed feature availability. Insider builds can contain regressions, and the sharing option was staged. Microsoft also cautioned that preview features may change, be removed, or never reach a public Windows release.
If choosing an Insider preview, use a test or secondary machine where possible, keep a recovery plan, and be prepared to report issues through Feedback Hub. Do not install this historical build expecting it to be the newest preview or to receive every announced feature immediately.
