Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4291 (KB5043166) was released to the Beta Channel on September 30, 2024, for Windows 11 version 23H2. It added targeted Task Manager and privacy-interface improvements, updated Snipping Tool behavior, and several reliability fixes. It also had important preview-build limitations, including a Live Captions crash and unexpected spacing in the Start menu’s All apps list.
This was not a stable-channel release or a major Windows feature upgrade. It is now a historical Insider build, superseded by later Beta Channel releases such as Build 22635.4300 on October 4, 2024.

Microsoft’s official announcement describes Build 22635.4291 as a Beta Channel preview based on Windows 11 23H2. It should not be confused with the Windows 11 24H2 Insider branch, which used the 26100-series build numbers.

What changed in Build 22635.4291?
Task Manager gets limited dark-mode and accessibility improvements
Microsoft began gradually rolling out dark-mode and text-scaling support for Task Manager’s Disconnect and Logoff dialogs. The change helps those dialogs better match a dark Windows theme and makes their text more usable with larger display scaling or accessibility settings.

This was not a complete Task Manager redesign. The announced change applied specifically to these dialogs.
Disk types appear in Task Manager’s Performance section
Task Manager’s Performance section gained disk-type labels as part of the gradual rollout. The labels can make it easier to distinguish storage devices when a computer contains multiple drives, such as an SSD and a hard disk.
Because this was controlled through Microsoft’s staged feature rollout system, not every Beta Channel computer necessarily displayed the labels immediately.
“Tailored Experiences” was renamed “Personalized offers”
Microsoft renamed the Tailored Experiences setting to Personalized offers. The related control was presented on the Recommendations and offers page under:
Settings → Privacy & security
Microsoft said the setting controls whether Windows can use information about a device and how it is used to enhance the Windows experience. This was a terminology and privacy-control change, not a new subscription, Windows edition, or paid feature.
Snipping Tool can use a custom save folder
Microsoft announced an updated Snipping Tool for Insiders in the Beta and Release Preview Channels. With Snipping Tool version 11.2408.15.0 or newer, users could select a different default folder for automatically saved original screenshots and screen recordings.
The option was accessed through Snipping Tool’s app settings. It is important to distinguish this from an operating-system-only feature: Snipping Tool is updated separately through the Microsoft Store, so installing Build 22635.4291 did not guarantee that the control was present.
To check, open Snipping Tool, open its settings, and verify that the app is version 11.2408.15.0 or newer. If the option is missing, check for app updates in the Microsoft Store. Microsoft did not promise that every device would receive the feature at the same time.
Copilot-key configuration was temporarily disabled
The ability to configure the Copilot key, which had started rolling out in Build 22635.4225, was temporarily disabled in Build 22635.4291 while Microsoft addressed issues and refined the experience.
This was a temporary rollback, not a permanent abolition of Copilot-key customization. A later Beta Channel announcement said the functionality was being enabled again with refinements.
Rollout status: why features could differ between PCs
Microsoft divided the announcement into changes that were gradually rolled out and changes delivered to everyone in the Beta Channel. The company used its Control Feature Rollout system, meaning two PCs showing Build 22635.4291 might not have identical interface features.

At the time, the relevant Windows Insider control was:
Settings → Windows Update → Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available

Enabling that option could make eligible gradual-rollout features appear sooner, but it did not guarantee immediate access to every experiment.
Fixes included in the update
Explorer and Alt+Tab reliability
Microsoft fixed several issues that could cause explorer.exe to crash, including a reported sporadic crash associated with using Alt+Tab in recent builds. The fix addressed specific reported scenarios; it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every Explorer or Alt+Tab crash was eliminated.

The build fixed a problem where selecting a letter in the Start menu’s All apps list could cause the list to break or render incorrectly.
That fix was separate from a newly documented known issue involving unexpected spacing between entries in the same list.
Work Folders synchronization with Defender for Endpoint
Microsoft fixed an issue in which Work Folders files failed to sync when Microsoft Defender for Endpoint was enabled. This is especially relevant to managed and business devices. The announcement does not establish that the issue affected every consumer cloud-storage or synchronization application.
Repeated PIN prompts for encrypted email
The update addressed a problem affecting Outlook and other encrypted email applications that could prompt users for their PIN every time they opened an encrypted email.

Microsoft Edge IE mode
The build fixed an issue that could cause Microsoft Edge to stop responding when users worked with sites in Internet Explorer mode. This improved compatibility for legacy web applications; it did not restore Internet Explorer as a separate browser.
TCP diagnostic data consistency
Microsoft corrected inconsistent data between TCP_INFO_v1 and GetPerTcpConnectionEstats. The correction mattered to file-synchronization services and other software that analyzes TCP connection performance.
It improves the consistency of diagnostic information. It is not a general network-speed upgrade.

Cellular operator profiles
The update brought certain Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA) profiles up to date for mobile operators. COSA changes are mainly relevant to cellular-capable Windows devices and do not affect every PC or mobile network.
Task Manager high-contrast transition
Microsoft fixed a problem that could cause Task Manager to stop responding when switching from a high-contrast theme to a normal theme. This was an accessibility-related reliability fix rather than a general performance improvement.
Known issues
Unexpected spacing in the Start menu
Some users could see an unexpected amount of spacing between entries in the Start menu’s All apps list. This was a documented preview defect and was not, by itself, evidence of corrupted system files.

Live Captions could crash
Microsoft listed a new issue in which Live Captions crashed when users tried to use it. This is the most consequential known issue for users who depend on Live Captions for accessibility.
If Live Captions is essential on a primary computer, Build 22635.4291 was a poor choice unless the device had a separate recovery plan and the user accepted the risk of losing that function temporarily.
Preview features could change or disappear
Insider features are experiments. Microsoft warned that features can be changed, removed, replaced, or never released outside the preview program. The Task Manager refinements, privacy wording, Snipping Tool behavior, and Copilot-key configuration should therefore not be treated as promises about all future Windows 11 editions.

How to get and verify the build
Check whether it is installed
Open:
Settings → System → About → Windows specifications
Check the listed Edition, Version, and OS build. A matching OS build identifies the installed Windows build, but it does not prove that every staged feature or Store app update is available.
Check for the update
At the time of release, eligible users needed to be enrolled in the Windows Insider Program and assigned to the Beta Channel. The update was checked through:
Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates
The exact wording of Windows Update controls can change in later Windows releases, but the historical Insider announcement used the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” wording for the gradual-rollout setting.
Prepare a recovery path
- Back up important files before installing an Insider build.
- Record the existing Windows build and versions of critical applications.
- Test the update on a non-primary device where possible.
- Keep a supported Windows recovery or rollback option available.
- If problems appear, use the recovery or rollback choices supported by the device and installation state.
Rollback is not guaranteed indefinitely. Its availability depends on installation history and Windows retention settings.
For reproducible problems, Microsoft asked Insiders to use Feedback Hub. The shortcut is Win + F, including for feedback about the Snipping Tool change.

Build 22635.4291 was quickly followed by later 22635-series Beta Channel builds, including Build 22635.4300 on October 4, 2024. Microsoft’s older Windows Insider Preview Builds archive is the appropriate reference for its historical position.
In other words, Build 22635.4291 is useful as a record of the 23H2 Beta Channel development track, but it is not a current preview target as of September 13, 2026.
Bottom line
Build 22635.4291 was a modest Windows 11 23H2 Beta Channel preview: useful Task Manager refinements, clearer privacy terminology, a separately updated Snipping Tool, a temporary Copilot-key rollback, and targeted reliability fixes. Its documented Live Captions crash and Start menu defect made it unsuitable for many primary PCs, especially accessibility-dependent systems. Install it only for controlled testing—not as a routine update for a stable Windows installation.
