Microsoft released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27868 to the Canary Channel on May 29, 2025. It mitigated a previous-flight problem that kept some apps—including Spotify—from launching and caused some Microsoft Store installations to fail with error 0x80070032. The build also added a Voice Access feature-discovery experience and several input, Group Policy Editor, and crash fixes. It is an experimental Insider build, not a general Windows 11 update; Microsoft also listed notable sign-in, audio, virtualization, and Task Manager issues.
What Build 27868 changes
Build 27868 is a Windows 11 Insider Preview for the Canary Channel, part of Microsoft’s early 27xxx development branch. Canary builds expose platform work early and are not tied to a particular future Windows release. Microsoft said at the time that it did not plan to release SDKs for 27xxx builds. The date matters: Microsoft released this build on May 29, 2025. It should be read as a report about that Insider flight, not as news that the same build is rolling out to ordinary Windows 11 PCs now. If you are already on a later Canary build, Windows Update is not a normal route back to an older build.

Microsoft said it mitigated an underlying issue from the previous Insider flight that could prevent some applications, including Spotify, from launching. Some apps could also fail to install through the Microsoft Store, sometimes with error 0x80070032.

This is a specific Canary regression fix, not a universal repair for app problems. Microsoft did not publish a full list of affected apps or say that every instance of the error code has the same cause. If an app still will not launch, the cause could instead be a damaged app installation, a Store issue, or an application-specific problem. The announcement does not provide a general repair procedure, and retail Windows users should not assume this Insider fix applies to their system.
Voice Access adds feature discovery
The Voice Access change is an immersive, in-product experience intended to introduce users to new Voice Access features and improvements and show them how to try those capabilities. Microsoft said it can be launched or dismissed from the Voice Access settings menu.

This is a discovery and guidance update—not a documented change to speech recognition, dictation accuracy, languages, or the command set. Voice Access itself lets users control Windows and author text by speaking; it is distinct from Voice Typing. Microsoft’s Voice Access guide explains its control and dictation capabilities.
If the experience is not visible, first check whether the device is running the relevant Insider build and whether Voice Access setup is complete. First-time setup requires an internet connection to download the speech model; after setup, Voice Access can work offline. Availability can also vary by language or region. Other fixes in the flight
- Pen and touch: Microsoft fixed an issue that made pen input unresponsive on some PCs that support inking; some touch interactions may also have been affected.
- Group Policy Editor rendering: The update addressed large blank areas seen in the editor in some display languages, including Chinese, in recent Canary builds.
- System crash: It fixed another underlying issue that caused some Insiders to hit the
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLEDbugcheck.
These are useful corrections for affected testers, but they do not make the build a general stability release.

- Windows Hello on some Copilot+ PCs: Moving a new Copilot+ PC into Canary from Dev, Release Preview, or a retail installation could make PIN and biometric sign-in unavailable. The reported error was
0xd0000225, with the message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available.” Microsoft said selecting Set up my PIN should let users recreate the PIN, but losing normal sign-in remains a significant risk. - Audio: Devices using high sampling rates—192 kHz was Microsoft’s example—and multiple channels might produce no sound after upgrading.
- Virtualization: With Virtualization Based Security enabled, virtualization-dependent software such as VMware Workstation could stop running unless the optional Windows Hypervisor Platform component was installed. Microsoft noted that it had not previously been required in the affected scenario.
- Task Manager: Search and other options, including filtering, might not work.
- Taskbar appearance: The taskbar might unexpectedly fail to show its acrylic material after upgrading.
- Group Policy Editor warning: An Administrative Templates error could still appear when opening the editor. Microsoft said clicking OK should allow users to proceed normally.
Should you install Build 27868?
For most people, no: treat it as a test build, not a recommended upgrade for a work, school, or accessibility-critical PC. Its fixes may be worthwhile if you already use Canary and were affected by the app-launch regression or pen-input problem. It may also interest users who want to try the Voice Access discovery experience on a noncritical test device.

How Canary enrollment works—and why availability is different now
At the time of release, the standard enrollment route was Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program: link or select a Microsoft account if prompted, choose Canary Channel, then return to Windows Update and check for updates. Enrollment puts a device on an experimental update track; it is not simply a way to obtain one isolated fix.
Because Build 27868 dates to May 2025, do not expect it to be offered as a current update in 2026. Check the Windows Insider release-notes index for later builds and current channel information. If you are not an Insider and see 0x80070032, this announcement alone does not identify or fix the cause on your retail installation.
