Press Windows key + V to open Clipboard History in Windows 11. If it is off, select Turn on. The feature keeps up to 25 recent entries, with a 4 MB limit per item; ordinary entries are cleared when the PC restarts, while pinned items are retained. It can sync supported content between devices when configured with the same Microsoft or work account.
What Clipboard History does
The clipboard holds the item you most recently copied. Clipboard History is a short list of recent copied items that you can open with Windows + V. Use Ctrl + V to paste the current clipboard item; use Windows + V to choose an earlier one.
Microsoft lists text, HTML, and bitmap content as supported formats. Clipboard History is not a permanent archive or a backup for files and documents. Its capacity is limited to 25 entries, and each item must be no larger than 4 MB. What a destination app can paste also depends on the formats that app accepts. Microsoft’s clipboard guide documents these limits and behaviors.
Turn Clipboard History on
Fastest method: press Windows + V, then select Turn on if Windows prompts you.

Or open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and turn on Clipboard history. The labels or layout can vary somewhat by Windows 11 release and by whether the device is managed by an organization.
Paste an older item
- Place the cursor where you want to paste.
- Press Windows + V.
- Select the entry you want.
The panel shows recent items, but it is not an unlimited chronological record. New copies add entries, older unpinned items eventually fall out, and ordinary history is cleared when Windows restarts. If an item appears in the panel but does not paste as expected, the destination application may not support that item’s format.

Pin, delete, or clear entries
Pin an item
- Open the panel with Windows + V.
- Select the … menu beside the item.
- Choose Pin.
Microsoft says pinned items are excluded from routine history clearing and restart cleanup. Pinning is useful for reusable snippets, but it should not be treated as a backup guarantee.

In the Windows + V panel, select … beside the item and choose Delete. This is the targeted option for removing a copied password, token, or other sensitive text.

Clear history
Open Windows + V and select Clear all, or go to Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and select Clear under Clear clipboard data. Pinned entries are excluded from the clear operation according to Microsoft; unpin and delete them separately if you want them removed too.
Sync Clipboard History between Windows devices
On each device, sign in with the same Microsoft account or work account. Then open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and enable Clipboard history across your devices or Sync across devices, depending on the wording shown.

For automatic text syncing, select Automatically sync text that I copy if that option is available. With manual syncing, open Windows + V and use the sync control on an individual item. Simply enabling sync does not necessarily upload every entry if manual mode is selected.

Do not assume every copied file or application-specific object will sync. Microsoft specifically describes automatic synchronization for copied text and lists text, HTML, and bitmap among supported clipboard formats. Work or school administrators can restrict sync, and a local-account setup may not offer the same cross-device experience. See Microsoft’s instructions for the current settings and account details.

Limits at a glance

Fix an empty or unavailable history
- Open the right panel. Press Windows + V; Ctrl + V only pastes the current item. If the panel offers Turn on, select it.
- Check the setting. Go to Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and confirm Clipboard History is enabled.
- Test with plain text. Copy a short phrase from Notepad, then open the panel. This helps distinguish a general history issue from an app- or format-specific problem.
- Check size and format. The documented per-item limit is 4 MB. Try plain text rather than a large image or specialized content.
- Consider a restart. If entries vanished after reboot, that is expected for ordinary unpinned history. Only pinned entries are intended to remain through restart cleanup.
- For sync, verify both devices. Check that sync is enabled on each PC, both use the same account, and manual sync has not been selected without syncing the individual item. A work or school policy may block it.
- Try a practical reset. Turn Clipboard History off in Settings, restart Windows, turn it on again, and retest with plain text. This is a troubleshooting measure, not a guaranteed fix.
- Temporarily close clipboard-related utilities. Clipboard managers, remote-access tools, password managers that clear the clipboard, virtual-machine integrations, and automation utilities can affect clipboard behavior. Close them one at a time and retest.
- Restart Windows Explorer if needed. Open Task Manager, find Windows Explorer, and choose Restart. Microsoft Q&A community guidance has suggested this and checking clipboard-intercepting software; results are not guaranteed. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion.
- Ask IT about managed PCs. If the setting is missing, locked, or local history works but sync does not, an organization may control the feature. Avoid registry changes unless you are an administrator working from guidance for the exact Windows edition and policy.
Privacy: treat copied content as data
History may include passwords, one-time codes, API keys, payment details, addresses, or confidential work text. Delete sensitive items promptly and avoid pinning secrets. If you do not want copied text sent between devices, leave cross-device sync off or disable automatic text syncing. On a work or school device, follow organizational policy.
Local Clipboard History and cross-device synchronization are separate choices: the history feature can be useful without enabling sync. Installing a third-party clipboard manager also means trusting another application to observe clipboard activity, so review its storage and sync behavior before using it with sensitive material.
Is the built-in feature enough?
- Use Windows Clipboard History if you need quick access to a few recent items, mostly short text or small images, and want no extra installation.
- Consider PowerToys Advanced Paste if you want transformations such as plain-text, Markdown, or JSON paste, local OCR, or paste-as-file features. Microsoft documents its features and options in the Advanced Paste guide and PowerToys overview. Some transformations run locally; optional online AI providers require configuration and may involve additional data-sharing and usage-cost considerations. PowerToys adds capabilities, but does not automatically remove every limitation of Windows’ built-in history.
- Consider ClipboardFusion if you need configurable history, hotkeys, macros, or triggers. Its vendor documentation describes local and online clipboard sections and other manager features: see the Clipboard Manager help guide and feature comparison. Check current licensing and data-handling details before choosing it.
For most people, start with the built-in panel. Add another tool only when a specific limit—such as the small history, lack of automation, or need for transformations—actually gets in the way. None of these tools should be treated as a guaranteed permanent backup for important information.
