Windows 11 24H2 does not have one universal “internet bug.” Connectivity failures after the update can come from a narrow DHCP compatibility problem, a damaged driver, DNS or TCP/IP configuration, VPN software, a router or ISP outage, or an app falsely reporting that the PC is offline.
Start by determining whether the entire computer is disconnected or only one service is failing. Test another device on the same network, check the PC’s IP address and gateway, and record the exact Windows build and recently installed KB number. Those three steps usually identify the correct troubleshooting branch faster than resetting everything.
Check Microsoft’s current 24H2 issue status first
Before changing advanced settings, check Microsoft’s Windows 11 24H2 Release Health page. It lists known issues, affected builds, safeguard holds, mitigations and resolutions. Microsoft’s statuses distinguish between reported, confirmed, mitigated, resolved and externally resolved problems.
The available August 2026 release-health information does not indicate a broad, unresolved internet outage affecting every 24H2 computer. However, the list changes as cumulative updates are released. A problem described as a “24H2 issue” may actually have been introduced—or fixed—by a later monthly update shared by Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2.

To capture the relevant version information:
- Press Windows+R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Open Settings → System → About to see the OS build.
- Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history.
- Record the KB installed immediately before the connection failed.
Also record whether the problem began after a feature update, cumulative update, driver update, VPN/security-software update or an attempted upgrade to 25H2.
Identify what actually stopped working

Five-minute checks before changing Windows
- Test another phone or computer on the same router.
- Connect the affected PC to a phone hotspot.
- If possible, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet.
- Restart the modem/router and the PC.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on, or unplug and reconnect Ethernet.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN.
- Open Start → Get Help, search for Network and Internet troubleshooter, and follow the prompts. Microsoft directs Windows 11 users to the automated Get Help troubleshooter for Wi-Fi and Ethernet problems.
These tests separate Windows from the network around it:
- Another device also fails: investigate the router, modem, ISP or shared DNS service.
- The hotspot works but home Wi-Fi fails: investigate the router, DHCP, DNS or a compatibility issue.
- Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails: investigate the wireless adapter, driver, radio, band or Wi-Fi profile.
- Wi-Fi works but Ethernet fails: check the cable, router port, Ethernet adapter and driver.
- Websites work but a Microsoft app fails: do not assume the computer is offline; investigate authentication or the app.
Check the IP address, gateway and DNS
Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run:

ipconfig /allLook for:
- A private IPv4 address, commonly in
192.168.x.x,10.x.x.xor172.16.x.xthrough172.31.x.x. - A Default Gateway, normally the router’s address.
- One or more DNS servers.
An address beginning with 169.254. is a diagnostic clue that Windows did not receive a DHCP lease. It is not, by itself, proof of one particular cause. The router, adapter, cable, driver or DHCP service may be responsible.
Test the connection in layers. Replace <default-gateway> with the address shown by ipconfig /all:

ping <default-gateway>
ping 1.1.1.1
nslookup example.com- Gateway ping fails: focus on Wi-Fi/Ethernet, the adapter, router or local IP configuration.
- Gateway works but
1.1.1.1fails: focus on the router, ISP, firewall, VPN or routing. - The IP ping works but
nslookupfails: DNS is the likely problem. - Everything works but a browser or app fails: check the proxy, VPN, firewall, browser, certificate, account or application.
A successful ping does not prove that web browsing will work because some networks block ICMP traffic. Similarly, changing DNS cannot repair a missing IP address or default gateway.
Refresh DHCP, DNS, TCP/IP and Winsock
If the adapter is present and the problem appears to be local configuration, run these commands in an elevated Command Prompt:

ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip resetRestart Windows afterward. ipconfig /renew should obtain a fresh DHCP lease, while the Winsock reset may explicitly say that a restart is required.
If ipconfig /renew repeatedly returns an error, stop repeating the command. Investigate the router’s DHCP service, the adapter, the driver, the cable or the network’s access controls. These commands cannot repair a failed adapter, defective router or ISP outage.
Repair or reinstall the network driver
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a yellow warning icon, disabled adapter, changed adapter name, unknown device or missing wireless adapter.
- Choose Action → Scan for hardware changes.
- Open the adapter’s Properties → Driver tab.
- If the problem began after a driver update, try Roll Back Driver.
- Otherwise install the current Windows 11 driver from the PC or adapter manufacturer.
Prefer the support page for the actual computer—such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Microsoft Surface or another OEM—or the actual adapter manufacturer, such as Intel, Realtek or MediaTek. Avoid generic third-party driver-updater utilities.

If the adapter is absent from Device Manager, a normal reinstall may not be enough. Check the laptop’s hardware switch or OEM hotkey, WLAN AutoConfig and related services, BIOS/UEFI wireless settings, hidden devices and unknown devices. A physical adapter or motherboard fault is also possible.

Test VPNs, proxies, firewalls and virtual networking
Temporarily disconnect the VPN and test again. If permitted on a personal computer, briefly test without third-party firewall, endpoint web-filtering or traffic-shaping software. Restore protection immediately after the test.
Also consider virtual adapters and switches created by VPN clients, Hyper-V or other virtualization tools. On a corporate computer, do not remove security software or change managed settings without the administrator’s approval. Proxy settings, 802.1X, certificates, Group Policy and endpoint controls can be essential to the organization’s network.
Use Network reset only after simpler fixes
Network reset is a broad reset, not a special 24H2 patch. Use it only after checking the network, IP configuration, drivers and interfering software:
- Open Settings → Network & internet.
- Select Advanced network settings.
- Choose Network reset.
- Select Reset now and restart when prompted.
Windows removes and reinstalls network adapters and returns networking components to their defaults. Record static IP settings, VPN names and credentials, certificates, Hyper-V virtual-switch details and other special configuration first. Microsoft warns that VPN software and Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be reinstalled or configured again afterward.

If Network reset fixes the problem only temporarily, look for the underlying driver, VPN filter or recurring configuration failure rather than repeatedly resetting the PC.

DHCP duplicate-option and IPv4 compatibility issue
Microsoft’s update notes, quoted in a Microsoft Q&A discussion, described a fix for a small number of devices that could not connect when a DHCP server response contained duplicate DHCP options. The result was failed IPv4 connectivity on certain networks.
This should be treated as an early, narrow compatibility issue that was addressed through servicing—not as proof that every 24H2 computer remains affected. If your PC has no valid IPv4 address or cannot renew its lease, compare it with another device on the same network and inspect the router’s DHCP behavior.
March 2026 false “no internet” message in Microsoft apps
After KB5079473, released March 10, 2026, some Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 users saw a message similar to “You’ll need the Internet for this” while signing in to Teams Free, OneDrive, Edge, Office apps or Microsoft 365 Copilot. Normal internet access could still work.

Before the fix was available, Microsoft’s temporary workaround was to restart while the PC remained connected to the internet; restarting offline could return the device to the problematic state.

KB5085516 does not fix every Wi-Fi, Ethernet, DHCP, DNS, VPN or driver problem. If browsers and other services also fail, use the network diagnosis above.
Historical Remote Desktop disconnections
Some Windows 11 24H2 clients experienced unexpected UDP-based RDP/RDS disconnections, including sessions ending after approximately 65 seconds when connecting to Windows Server 2016 or earlier environments. Microsoft marked the issue resolved by KB5053656, released March 27, 2025.
This was a remote-connectivity problem, not a general web-browsing outage. If only RDP fails, update the client and check the server environment rather than resetting the home router.
If the failure began immediately after an update
- Install all available Windows updates, including later cumulative updates.
- Check the 24H2 Release Health page for a matching issue, mitigation or safeguard hold.
- Install the latest OEM network driver, or roll back the driver if it was the trigger.
- Review Settings → Windows Update → Update history and identify the specific KB.
- Create a restore point or backup before major changes.
- Use update removal only as a controlled fallback when the triggering KB is identified and the device is protected.
Do not casually remove a security update or block updates indefinitely. If Microsoft has documented the issue, prefer the documented cumulative update, Known Issue Rollback or vendor driver. A safeguard hold means Microsoft has withheld an update because of a compatibility risk; forcing it can reproduce the problem.
Should you upgrade from 24H2 to 25H2?
Because 25H2 is the latest Windows 11 version and 24H2 Home and Pro reaches end of updates on October 13, 2026, upgrading may be the sensible long-term choice when the PC is eligible. First back up important data, confirm application and driver compatibility, check Release Health for safeguard holds and ensure you have a way to restore the system.
Do not treat 25H2 as a guaranteed connectivity fix. If the real cause is a bad router, missing DHCP lease, DNS failure, VPN filter or defective adapter, the same problem can remain after the upgrade.
When to contact support
- The adapter remains absent from Device Manager after hardware and driver checks.
- Several devices fail on the same router or modem.
- The computer is managed by an employer or school.
- VPN, proxy, certificate, 802.1X or endpoint-security authentication is involved.
- A BIOS, firmware or OEM-specific update may be required.
- Windows cannot repair networking services or other system components.
When escalating, provide the winver result, OS build, installed KB, adapter model, connection type, ipconfig /all output and the results of the gateway, IP and DNS tests. Redact public IP addresses, usernames, certificates and other sensitive information.
