If DisplaySwitch.exe /extend, /clone, /internal, or /external stopped working in Windows 11 22H2, try the numeric arguments instead. The reported mapping is 1 for internal display only, 2 for duplicate, 3 for extend, and 4 for external display only.
This behavior was reported on Windows 11 22H2 build 22621.1928, associated with the June 27, 2023 preview update KB5027303. It is a community-reported compatibility workaround, not a clearly documented permanent command-line contract, so test it on your specific build.

The mapping comes from reports in the Microsoft Q&A discussion about DisplaySwitch.exe. It may vary between cumulative updates, graphics drivers, docks, and monitor configurations.

Win+P and DisplaySwitch.exe are related but not identical. Win+P is the standard Windows shortcut that opens the Project panel with these choices:

Opening that panel is normal. The regression affected scripts and shortcuts that expected DisplaySwitch.exe with Windows 10-style switches to apply a mode immediately. On some Windows 11 22H2 builds, commands such as DisplaySwitch.exe /extend instead opened the Project interface or failed to change the topology.
Check your Windows build
Press Win+R, enter winver, and press Enter. You can also use PowerShell:

One participant reported the numeric syntax working on 22621.1928, while another reported that it did not work on 22621.1555. Later updates may behave differently. Build 22621.1928 is a historical 22H2 build, not a current Windows release target.

Test the commands manually
Run one command at a time in Command Prompt or PowerShell:

Rebuild custom hotkeys with AutoHotkey v2
After confirming the commands work interactively, you can assign them to hotkeys. This example uses AutoHotkey v2 syntax:

$^!4::Run displaySwitch " 4" ; Second screen onlyHere, Ctrl+Alt+1 through Ctrl+Alt+4 select the four modes. This is specifically AutoHotkey v2 syntax; AutoHotkey v1 scripts use different function and hotkey conventions. The explicit path avoids PATH and working-directory ambiguity.
Create desktop shortcuts instead
- Right-click the desktop and choose New > Shortcut.
- Use one of these targets:

%windir%System32DisplaySwitch.exe 4- Give each shortcut a descriptive name, such as Extend displays.
- Open the shortcut’s Properties and assign a shortcut key if desired.
Windows shortcut-key handling can be less predictable than AutoHotkey, and the shortcut may need to remain on the desktop or in the Start menu.

If the numeric commands do nothing
- Confirm display detection. Open Settings > System > Display, select Identify, and use Detect. Check the monitor input, cable, dock, adapter, and power.
- Try Win+P. Select the required mode from the Project panel. This is the safest graphical fallback.
- Use the full executable path. This rules out command-resolution or quoting issues.
- Try both shells. Run the command in Command Prompt and PowerShell to exclude shell-specific invocation errors.
- Restart Explorer or Windows. Docking, graphics-driver, and monitor state can temporarily prevent a topology change.
- Update Windows and the graphics driver. The behavior varied across 22H2 builds and later updates may have corrected it.
If DisplaySwitch 4 is used while no external display is available, it may appear to do nothing or leave you with no visible output. A closed laptop lid can create the same problem when the selected mode depends on an unavailable panel.
Recover from a blank or wrong display
Press Win+P and choose a visible mode. If you cannot see the panel, reconnect or power on the monitor, open the laptop lid, and try again. You can also use Settings > System > Display after restoring a visible display.

Remote Desktop sessions, virtual machines, USB-C or Thunderbolt docks, DisplayLink adapters, and GPU-connected monitors may expose a different display topology from the physical machine. Test the shortcut in the environment where it will actually be used.

Should you replace DisplaySwitch.exe?
A Microsoft Q&A participant reported copying a Windows 10 version of the executable as a workaround for the old slash arguments. This should not be the first choice. Replacing or overriding a Windows system executable can create version, signing, servicing, and compatibility problems, and a Windows-managed location may be repaired or overwritten by an update.
Use the numeric syntax when it works, retain the original Windows file, and avoid overwriting the system executable casually. If a later update changes the behavior, reassess the command on that build rather than assuming the 22H2 workaround remains valid.
Developer alternative: SetDisplayConfig
Software that needs a more controlled and maintainable solution can call the Windows SetDisplayConfig API with topology flags such as SDC_TOPOLOGY_INTERNAL, SDC_TOPOLOGY_CLONE, SDC_TOPOLOGY_EXTEND, SDC_TOPOLOGY_EXTERNAL, and SDC_APPLY. That approach is excessive for a personal shortcut but preferable for a dedicated administrative or developer utility.

- Win+P and the Project panel.
- Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays.
- The Project control in Quick Settings, where available.
- Manufacturer utilities when the problem is specific to a dock, adapter, or graphics device.
Microsoft’s guidance also uses Win+P, Display settings, and display detection for duplicate-display problems: duplicate-screen guidance and display-settings guidance.
