Yes—the offer is genuine, but the original “one year” headline is no longer the whole story. Microsoft’s ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Eligible personal PCs running Windows 10 version 22H2 can enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU). In the European Economic Area (EEA), Microsoft offers a no-additional-cost enrollment route tied to using a Microsoft account.
Microsoft’s newer ESU pages now say coverage can continue through October 12, 2027, while an older Irish regional page still shows October 13, 2026. Check the date shown in Windows Update and your ESU enrollment experience rather than relying on the original one-year description.
What Microsoft is offering
Windows 10 ESU is an official Microsoft program—not a loophole, antivirus promotion, or third-party workaround. It provides eligible consumer PCs with additional critical and important security updates after normal Windows 10 support ended.
ESU does not restore full Windows 10 support. It does not add new features, provide ordinary bug fixes, improve performance, add hardware support, or guarantee standard technical support. Microsoft says the updates are delivered through the normal Windows Update channel.

The important date correction

Microsoft’s regional documentation is inconsistent. The safest conclusion is that the original one-year offer has been extended according to newer Microsoft pages, but the exact end date attached to an individual enrollment should be verified in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and on Microsoft’s enrollment page.
Do not describe the offer simply as “one year of free updates” without this qualification. Also note that the dates differ by one day across Microsoft pages, so quote the exact date displayed by the relevant page or device.

Consumer ESU is not automatically available to every Windows 10 user in Europe. The typical requirements are:
- The PC runs Windows 10 version 22H2.
- It uses a supported consumer edition, such as Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Pro for Workstations.
- The latest Windows updates are installed.
- Enrollment uses an administrator Microsoft account.
- The account is not a child account.
- The device is being used personally rather than managed as a commercial or organizational computer.
Microsoft excludes or restricts consumer enrollment on devices that are in kiosk mode, joined to an Active Directory domain, Microsoft Entra joined, enrolled in mobile-device management, or already covered by another ESU license. An Entra-registered device is treated differently from an Entra-joined device and may still qualify under Microsoft’s stated rules.

“European users” is also too broad. This no-additional-cost route is described for consumers in the European Economic Area, not automatically every country in Europe.
Does it cover Windows 10 Home and Pro?
Yes, eligible personal PCs running supported Windows 10 22H2 editions—including Home and Pro—can use the consumer program. The edition alone is not enough: version, update status, account type, geography, and device-management status also matter.

For EEA consumers, “free” means no additional payment under the account-based enrollment route. It does not mean that enrollment is automatic or that a local account can be used without conditions.
Microsoft’s EEA documentation ties the no-cost route to signing in with a Microsoft account and continuing to use that account on the PC. If the user stops signing in with the enrolled account, Microsoft says updates may be discontinued after a period of up to 60 days. Re-enrollment may then be required.
This is separate from Windows Backup or settings synchronization. Microsoft’s general consumer documentation lists settings synchronization as one possible no-cost enrollment method and also mentions a route using 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Where offered, Microsoft lists a one-time purchase of $30 USD or the local-currency equivalent plus tax for users who do not want to remain signed in. Options vary by region, so do not assume every EEA user will see all of them.

How to enroll
- Open Start > Settings > System > About and confirm the Windows edition and version.
- Confirm that the PC is running Windows 10 version 22H2.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart when requested. Repeat until Windows Update reports that no further updates are available.
- Return to Windows Update and look for the Windows 10 end-of-support or Extended Security Updates notice.
- Select the enrollment control, which may be labelled Enroll now, Get updates, or similar wording.
- Sign in with an administrator Microsoft account.
- Choose the no-additional-cost EEA route if it is offered.
- Accept the terms and complete enrollment.
- Return to Windows Update and confirm that ESU enrollment or continued protection is shown.
Take a screenshot of the confirmation and record which Microsoft account was used, particularly on a shared family computer.
If the enrollment option does not appear
An absent enrollment notice does not by itself prove that the PC is ineligible. Check the following:
- The system is on Windows 10 22H2.
- All cumulative updates have been installed and the PC has restarted.
- Windows Update is working normally.
- The Windows edition is supported.
- The Microsoft account is an administrator account and not a child account.
- The PC is not domain-joined, Entra-joined, MDM-managed, or in kiosk mode.
- The device is not already covered by another ESU license.
- The PC is physically located in an eligible EEA country.
- Microsoft’s phased rollout or regional availability is not delaying the offer.
Do not use registry hacks, unofficial activation commands, or third-party “ESU unlockers.” They can create licensing, update, security, and recovery problems.
What ESU includes—and what it does not

ESU lowers exposure to known vulnerabilities covered by Microsoft. It does not make an unsupported Windows 10 installation equivalent to a fully supported operating system, and it does not protect unsupported third-party software such as browsers, VPNs, printer utilities, accounting packages, or antivirus products.

Can you upgrade to Windows 11 later?
Yes. Microsoft says ESU enrollment does not block a later upgrade to Windows 11. Check Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update for an upgrade offer or compatibility message, and use Microsoft’s official Windows 11 specifications and PC Health Check guidance where available.
Use an officially supported Windows 11 installation as the default route. Installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware may introduce compatibility, driver, update, and support risks.
Which option makes sense?
Choose ESU when:
- The PC cannot officially run Windows 11.
- It is reliable and still receives updates normally.
- You need time to migrate applications or back up data.
- You accept the Microsoft-account sign-in condition.
- The computer is personal, not organization-managed.
Choose Windows 11 when:
- The PC passes Microsoft’s hardware requirements.
- You want ongoing support and new features.
- Your applications, peripherals, and accessibility tools work with Windows 11.
Replace the PC when:
- It fails Windows 11 requirements and is slow, unreliable, or has failing storage.
- You need long-term Windows compatibility rather than a temporary bridge.
- Repeated troubleshooting costs more time than the computer is worth.
Consider Linux or ChromeOS Flex when:
- Your work is mainly browsing, email, documents, media, and other web-based tasks.
- You are willing to learn a different desktop environment.
- You have verified support for printers, scanners, specialist software, games, and accessibility hardware.
Ubuntu Desktop and Linux Mint are free Linux options. ChromeOS Flex may suit browser-centric use, but check Google’s supported-model list and peripheral compatibility first.
Home users versus businesses
A company-owned computer, domain-joined PC, MDM-managed device, or enterprise installation should not be assumed to qualify for the consumer offer. Commercial Windows 10 ESU is a separate licensing program with different rules and costs. Small businesses should assess commercial licensing or migration options rather than enrolling an organization-managed PC as though it were a household device.
Security precautions still matter
ESU is not a complete security plan. Keep browsers and applications supported, install updates promptly, use strong unique passwords and multi-factor authentication, avoid pirated software and unsafe remote-access tools, remove malicious browser extensions, and maintain tested backups. Security updates cannot compensate for phishing, weak account security, unsupported drivers, or missing backups.

Do I need to upload my personal files?
Microsoft-account sign-in is required for the EEA account-based route. Do not assume that all personal files must be uploaded or that full settings synchronization is mandatory; enrollment conditions can differ by region and by the option displayed on your PC.
Can I keep using a local Windows account?
The EEA no-cost route is tied to continued use of the enrolled Microsoft account. Microsoft describes a paid route, where available, for users who want to continue with a local account without remaining signed in.
What happens after ESU ends?
Windows 10 will remain installed, but it will no longer receive the ESU security coverage. Plan to upgrade, replace the PC, or move to a supported alternative before the end date shown for your enrollment.

No. It provides limited security servicing for covered Windows vulnerabilities. It does not guarantee protection from malware, phishing, unsupported applications, unsafe downloads, or compromised accounts.
