If Windows 10 is stuck on “Repairing disk errors,” the message does not prove the drive is physically damaged. Windows may be checking file-system corruption, trying to recover readable data, or failing to start for an unrelated reason. First protect important files: if the drive clicks, disappears, or contains irreplaceable data, stop running repair scans and prioritize recovery. Otherwise, let any scan showing progress finish, then work through the least risky recovery steps below.
Quick triage
- Progress is changing and there are no warning signs: leave the computer plugged in and allow the check to finish. A large or damaged drive can take many hours.
- The drive clicks or grinds, vanishes from BIOS/UEFI, or produces repeated read errors: power down and prioritize a backup, disk image, or professional data recovery. More scans may make recovery harder.
- No signs of hardware trouble: enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), try Startup Repair, identify the correct Windows volume, and back up files before running disk repairs.
What “repairing disk errors” means
The message can refer to several different problems, not just a physically damaged drive:
- File-system corruption: an improper shutdown or other problem may have damaged NTFS bookkeeping information. CHKDSK can fix some logical errors.
- Unreadable sectors: Windows may be trying to read areas of the drive that are difficult or impossible to access.
- Windows file damage: files required to start Windows may be missing or corrupted.
- Boot configuration trouble: the EFI boot files or other startup configuration may be damaged.
- A hardware or connection problem: an HDD, SSD, controller, cable, or power connection may be failing.
- A non-disk startup problem: a recent update, driver, or configuration change can send Windows into a repair loop even when the drive itself is healthy.
CHKDSK can repair some file-system errors, but it cannot fix a failing read head, damaged SSD controller, deteriorating NAND, or a loose cable. Even a successful scan does not prove the drive is healthy. Microsoft’s CHKDSK reference explains what its repair and sector-checking options do.

There is no dependable universal time limit. Duration depends on the drive’s capacity and type, how much data is in use, how many errors Windows encounters, and whether it is searching for bad sectors. A large HDD scan may take many hours. A percentage that has not changed for a while does not by itself prove the process is frozen, especially if the drive is still active.

Wait if progress continues and the drive behaves normally. Repeatedly reaching the same repair screen, no apparent disk activity for an extended period, increasingly slow reads, new I/O errors, or unusual noises are reasons to shift from repair attempts to protecting data and checking the hardware.
1. Open Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE contains Startup Repair, System Restore, Command Prompt, and other recovery options. Microsoft describes these tools in its Windows Recovery Environment guide.
- If Windows still reaches the sign-in screen: choose Start > Power, hold Shift, and select Restart. Then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
- If startup fails: Windows may open recovery automatically after multiple failed starts. If it does not, interrupt startup several times by powering off during early boot, then let the next start continue. Use this only as a fallback; do not make a habit of interrupting a disk check.
- With installation media: boot from a Windows 10 USB or DVD and select Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options—not Install now unless you have decided to install Windows.
Microsoft’s Windows 10 download page provides installation-media options. Its media-creation process specifies a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB; creating media erases the USB drive’s contents.
2. Try Startup Repair
In WinRE, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, select the Windows installation if asked, and follow the prompts. Startup Repair checks for common startup faults, including some damaged system files and boot-configuration problems. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.
If it cannot repair the PC, return to Advanced options. Do not jump straight to Reset this PC if you have not secured your files. Continue with the data-protection and diagnostic steps below.
3. Find the Windows volume letter before using commands
Drive letters often change in WinRE. The Windows installation that appears as C: during normal use may be D: or another letter here. Never run a repair command against a guessed letter.
- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
- Enter these commands to list volumes:
diskpart
list vol
exitLook for likely volumes, then inspect them one by one:

dir E:The Windows volume normally contains Windows, Users, and Program Files folders. A small FAT32 volume is usually the EFI System Partition, not the Windows volume. If you cannot identify the right volume, stop rather than guessing. If BitLocker shows the volume as locked, you will need its recovery key to access the files; use the key associated with your Microsoft account, workplace or school, printed record, or saved recovery record. There is no safe bypass for encryption.
4. Copy important files before repairing the file system
If the volume is readable, copy irreplaceable files to a separate external drive before running a repair that changes file-system metadata. Microsoft also advises backing up important files before using recovery options; see its recovery options guidance.
A simple WinRE method is to open Command Prompt, type notepad, then use File > Open in Notepad to browse the Windows volume and copy files to the external drive. Alternatively, use robocopy after checking both drive letters:
robocopy D:UsersYourName E:BackupYourName /E /COPY:DAT /R:1 /W:1 /XJReplace D: with the Windows volume, E: with the external backup drive, and YourName with the account folder. If the drive is clicking, repeatedly disconnecting, or becoming less readable, repeated copying can stress it; a professional recovery workflow or a sector-by-sector image may be safer. Do not save recovered files back to the problem drive.
5. Run CHKDSK cautiously
Once you have identified the correct Windows volume—and backed up important files if possible—start with the less extensive file-system repair:
chkdsk D: /fReplace D: with the actual Windows volume letter. The /f switch fixes logical file-system errors. If Windows says the volume cannot be locked or accessed, recheck the letter and make sure you are running the command from WinRE.
The more extensive option is:
chkdsk D: /r/r includes /f, searches for bad sectors, and attempts to recover readable information from them. It can take much longer, especially on a large HDD. The optional /x switch forces a volume to dismount first and also includes /f. These options do not restore physically damaged media or repair a failing device.

Use /r when there is a reason to check for unreadable sectors and you have considered the recovery risk. On a drive that may be failing, do not repeatedly run CHKDSK against the only copy of important data: it changes file-system metadata, and imaging the drive or seeking professional help may be preferable. Do not cancel a scan solely because its displayed percentage has not changed briefly.

If CHKDSK finishes but Windows still will not start, run System File Checker against the offline installation from WinRE. Substitute the verified Windows volume letter in both locations:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:WindowsIf SFC says it repaired corrupt files, restart and test Windows. If it cannot perform the requested operation, verify the volume letter, unlock BitLocker if needed, and address file-system errors first. If it cannot repair some files, try System Restore or update removal. DISM is another advanced option, but an offline repair can require installation files that match the installed Windows version; a generic /Online command from WinRE does not automatically target the offline installation.
7. Undo a recent change with System Restore or update removal
If the loop started after a driver installation, system configuration change, or update, try a rollback before considering a reset:
- System Restore: in WinRE select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore, then choose a restore point from before the problem began if one is available. It targets system settings, drivers, and installed programs; it is not a backup for personal files.
- Remove a recent update: select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Try Uninstall latest quality update first if the problem followed a regular update; use Uninstall latest feature update if that is the relevant recent change and the option is available. The choices may be absent or may not resolve a hardware fault.

8. Try Safe Mode if available
In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. After restart, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking, or 6 or F6 for Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
If Safe Mode starts, back up files promptly. Remove a recently installed driver, storage utility, or other likely cause; uninstall a recent update if appropriate. You can also review Event Viewer for disk-related warnings and run elevated CHKDSK or SFC after your files are safe. Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not proof that a drive is healthy or a permanent repair.

9. Repair UEFI boot files only when boot damage is likely
Do not run a list of boot commands just because Windows will not start. Boot repair depends on whether the PC uses UEFI or legacy BIOS, the disk’s partition layout, and the actual failure. On many modern UEFI systems, rebuilding startup files with bcdboot may be appropriate, but only after identifying the Windows volume and EFI System Partition correctly.
For an experienced user, a possible UEFI repair pattern—not a universal fix—is to assign the EFI partition a temporary letter such as S: and then run:

bcdboot D:Windows /s S: /f UEFIThis assumes that D: is the correct Windows installation and S: is the correct EFI partition. Stop if you are uncertain about the partition layout, firmware mode, or BitLocker state. Avoid destructive commands such as diskpart clean, formatting, or deleting partitions; they can erase data. 10. Use installation media only after protecting data
Boot from Windows installation media and choose Repair your computer to return to recovery tools. If recovery fails, you can consider reset or reinstall options, but first confirm that your files are backed up. Reset this PC can remove applications, and the outcome for personal files depends on the option selected; neither choice replaces a separate backup. A clean installation can erase files and apps, so do not choose Install now casually.
For a reinstall, verify the correct Windows edition and architecture for the device and license. If the storage device or controller is defective, reinstalling may fail or the repair loop may return. Microsoft lists Windows 10 22H2 as its final feature update on the Windows 10 download page.
When to stop and seek drive or data help
Prioritize data recovery and hardware diagnosis instead of further repair scans if any of these apply:
- An HDD clicks, grinds, spins down, or repeatedly reconnects.
- The drive intermittently disappears from BIOS/UEFI or is absent from
diskpart > list disk. - CHKDSK reports many unreadable sectors, or scans repeatedly fail at the same point.
- Files vanish, open unusually slowly, or produce I/O errors.
- The data is irreplaceable, or the drive is encrypted and the recovery key is unavailable.
If the internal drive is not detected, check whether BIOS/UEFI sees it. On a desktop, a qualified person can check power and data connections; do not open or reseat components unless you know how to service that device safely. Do not initialize or format a disk simply because Windows cannot read it. HDDs may give mechanical warning sounds; SSDs are silent, and failure can instead appear as sudden disappearance, read-only behavior, or widespread I/O errors. If the data matters more than the computer, consult a reputable recovery specialist before further attempts.

If Windows starts again, back up immediately and check the drive using the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility. Recurring repair loops, disk warnings in Event Viewer, or worsening performance merit a full backup and further diagnosis; one successful boot is not proof the underlying issue is gone.
After the repair: plan for Windows 10 support
Windows 10 reached the end of free support on October 14, 2025. Standard Windows 10 installations no longer receive free Windows Update security fixes or technical support. Can I turn off the PC while it is repairing disk errors?
Avoid interrupting a scan that is progressing normally. If the PC has been unresponsive for an extended period and the drive shows no activity, or you hear unusual noises, prioritize data recovery and diagnosis rather than repeatedly forcing repair scans.

It is intended to locate bad sectors and recover readable information, not to erase a volume. However, CHKDSK can change file-system metadata, and running it on a failing drive can complicate later data recovery. Back up or image important data first when possible.
Why is my Windows drive not C: in Command Prompt?
WinRE assigns drive letters independently from the running Windows session, so the Windows volume may appear as D: or another letter. Use DiskPart’s list volume command and check for the Windows, Users, and Program Files folders before running repairs.
Can Startup Repair fix a bad hard drive?
Startup Repair can address some common Windows startup and boot-configuration problems, but it cannot repair a physically failing HDD or SSD. Hardware warning signs require drive diagnosis and data protection.
What if BitLocker asks for a recovery key?
You need the recovery key for that encrypted volume to access it in WinRE. Check the Microsoft account, organization or school that manages the PC, or any printed or saved recovery record. Do not try to bypass encryption.
