For precise local-file searches in Windows 10, use File Explorer: choose a folder or This PC, search, then add filters such as kind:docs or datemodified:last week. Taskbar search is broader—it can mix files with apps, account content and web results—so it is usually less useful when you need to narrow files by location or metadata.
Windows 10 legacy note: Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Its search features may still work, but Windows 10 is no longer in normal support. See Microsoft’s Windows file-search guidance.
Choose the right Windows search

- Open File Explorer.
- Choose a likely location, such as Downloads, Documents, a particular folder or This PC.
- Click the search box in the upper-right corner and enter a filename fragment, phrase or keyword.
- Add a property query in the same box, such as
kind:docs. You can also use search controls shown by your Windows 10 build; their appearance varies. - Sort the results by name, date, type or size if that makes the remaining matches easier to scan.
The selected location is important: a search begun in Downloads does not search every folder on the computer. Start with a specific folder when you know the likely location; use This PC if you do not. Searching a folder is generally the clearest way to constrain scope for everyday searches.

Use Advanced Query Syntax for precise searches
Advanced Query Syntax (AQS) lets you combine a regular keyword or phrase with a file kind, property, location-related term and Boolean operators. The general patterns include <scope name>:<value>, <file kind>:<value> and <property name>:<value>. Microsoft documents these forms in its Advanced Query Syntax reference.
That reference describes legacy Windows Desktop Search 2.x technology and notes that later Windows versions use Windows Search. Treat its examples as useful Windows 10 File Explorer syntax, not a promise that every property works the same on every build, file type or indexed location.

Title-related property terms in Microsoft’s reference include title, subject and about. Metadata searches depend on usable metadata being present and indexed; a downloaded file, PDF, image or Office document may not have the property you are looking for. For size and date comparisons, use the documented syntax as a starting point and check how your Windows 10 installation interprets the query.

Other useful combinations include kind:docs datemodified:last week for recent documents, kind:spreadsheets size:>500 for larger spreadsheets under the documented byte comparison, and "annual report" kind:docs for documents matching that exact phrase. A query such as invoice NOT draft excludes matches for draft. If adding a condition removes the file you expect, remove that condition and test it separately.

These are Windows Search query examples, not universal web-search commands. Bing has separate rules for Boolean operators and quotation marks; see Bing advanced search options. Do not expect a File Explorer property query such as kind:docs to filter Bing results.

Fix a search that returns no results
- Search the selected folder with a simple, distinctive filename fragment.
- Check that the file is actually inside that folder. If its location is unknown, switch to This PC.
- Remove quotation marks unless you need an exact phrase, and check that quotes enclose only the phrase—not the whole query.
- Remove one restriction at a time, such as
kind:,author:, a date or a size comparison. - If a relative date such as
last weekfails, try a simpler keyword search and add the date again after confirming the file is found. - Review which locations Windows indexes using Start > Settings > Search > Searching Windows. Allow indexing to catch up if you recently added a large folder.
A file can be present but absent from search because its folder is not indexed, indexing is incomplete, the query targets metadata the file does not contain, or the file is stored in a cloud location that is unavailable offline. A word visible on a scanned page may be part of an image rather than searchable text. Windows does not guarantee full-text searching for every PDF, image, archive or proprietary format.

Change indexing coverage and search privacy
Open Start > Settings > Search > Searching Windows to review Windows 10’s search-location options, including whether it searches common folders or the entire PC and the controls for included or excluded locations. Windows indexing helps searches return faster, but broader coverage can take longer to build and may use more CPU or battery. If occasional searches are enough, avoid turning on broad indexing just for them.

Taskbar Windows Search can show local apps and files alongside personal OneDrive or Outlook content, work or school services such as OneDrive for Business, Outlook and SharePoint, and Bing-powered web results or suggestions. Cloud results depend on connected accounts and settings. For a local-file search, use File Explorer and a local folder; if you use taskbar search, review cloud-content and search permissions in Start > Settings > Search > Permissions & History. Windows 10’s AQS examples should not be confused with semantic indexing described for supported Copilot+ PCs; that is not a general Windows 10 search feature.

Run these property queries in the File Explorer search box. Their success depends on the search scope, Windows build, indexed locations, file type and available metadata.
