Windows 10 Enterprise version 20H2 was the October 2020 feature update for Enterprise-class Windows editions. It is no longer supported: Enterprise, Education, Enterprise multi-session, and IoT Enterprise editions reached the end of servicing on May 9, 2023. As of September 2026, 20H2 should not be newly installed or treated as a secure production baseline.
If you found “Windows 10 Enterprise Version 20H2” in winver, an inventory report, deployment media, or licensing records, the practical next step is to verify the device and plan migration to a supported Windows 11 release or an appropriate replacement platform.
What “Windows 10 Enterprise Version 20H2” means
The name combines four different concepts:
- Windows 10 is the operating-system generation.
- Enterprise is the edition designed for organizational licensing, security, deployment, and management.
- 20H2 means the second half (
H2) of 2020 (20). - Build identifies the specific technical build branch. Version 20H2 normally belongs to the
19042branch.
20H2 was also called the Windows 10 October 2020 Update. It was a feature-update version of Windows 10, not a separate operating-system family or a distinct product equivalent to Windows Enterprise LTSC.
A device can therefore be correctly activated as Windows 10 Enterprise while still running an obsolete version. Edition, activation, version, build, and support status are separate questions.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Enterprise and Education lifecycle lists the 20H2 release date and edition-specific servicing dates. Microsoft lifecycle pages display dates in Pacific Time, so organizations with formal compliance deadlines should account for their own time zone.
The May 9, 2023 date is the important date for ordinary Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2 installations. After that point, the release stopped receiving normal security and quality servicing. The later Windows 10-wide end-of-support date does not extend 20H2’s lifecycle.
What changed in Windows 10 20H2?
20H2 was a comparatively scoped release, particularly for systems already running Windows 10 version 2004. Its visible changes included:
- Chromium-based Microsoft Edge replaced the legacy Edge browser in the release.
- The Start menu received theme-aware, partially transparent tiles and refreshed icon presentation.
- Notifications received an updated appearance.
- Advanced display settings gained a refresh-rate control.
Alt+Tabcould show Microsoft Edge tabs by default, with settings available to change that behavior.- Some legacy System Control Panel functions moved into Settings > System > About.
- Compatible detachable two-in-one devices gained more automatic tablet-mode behavior.
Enterprise-relevant changes included additional mobile-device-management policy support for Local Users and Groups, Windows Sandbox policy additions, Microsoft Defender Application Guard support for Office documents, and Windows Hello improvements involving virtualization-based security on suitably configured hardware.
Microsoft also described a servicing change in which the servicing stack update and latest cumulative update were combined beginning with this release. These capabilities were part of the wider Windows management and security ecosystem; they were not all exclusive to the Enterprise edition.

Windows 10 version 2004 versus 20H2
Windows 10 20H2 had an unusually close technical relationship with version 2004. On compatible version-2004 systems, Microsoft delivered much of the change through a small enablement package rather than a full traditional feature-upgrade process.
The historical enablement package was identified as KB4562830 for suitable version-2004 deployments. This explains why some organizations saw 20H2 activate quickly after installing a relatively small package: the underlying operating-system components were already present, and the package enabled the newer feature set.
KB4562830 is historical deployment context, not a current security solution. Installing it does not make a 20H2 device supported today, and it should not be used as a migration plan for an arbitrary Windows installation.
How to check whether a PC is running 20H2
Use Winver
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Check whether the dialog reports Windows 10 and Version 20H2.
This is usually the quickest confirmation method.
Check Settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > About.
- Under Windows specifications, record the edition, version, and OS build.
The exact presentation can vary by cumulative update and management policy, so use winver when you need a simple version check.

Get-ComputerInfo | Select-Object WindowsProductName, WindowsVersion, OsBuildNumberA 20H2 installation normally has a build beginning with 19042. The number after the decimal changes with cumulative updates. A 19042 build is not evidence that the computer is current or secure; the entire 20H2 branch is obsolete.
Is Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2 still supported?
No. Ordinary Enterprise 20H2 support ended on May 9, 2023. Windows 10’s general support then ended on October 14, 2025, although specific Long-Term Servicing Channel releases have separate lifecycles.
Do not confuse the following:
- Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2: a regular Windows feature-update version that is obsolete.
- Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC: a separate servicing channel intended for specialized, fixed-purpose systems.
- Windows 10 ESU: an extended-security program with specific edition, version, licensing, and prerequisite requirements.
Microsoft’s current Windows 10 ESU instructions target Windows 10 version 22H2, not 20H2. An organization cannot make 20H2 eligible simply by purchasing ordinary Windows 10 ESU.
Enterprise 20H2 versus Enterprise LTSC

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021, for example, has its own lifecycle and is not another name for Enterprise 20H2. LTSC can be appropriate for narrowly controlled kiosks, industrial systems, medical devices, or other fixed-purpose workloads, but it may be a poor fit for general office PCs that need current Windows features and broad application compatibility. Microsoft’s release-health information for Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 should be checked for that specific release.

What organizations should do now
1. Inventory the affected devices
Identify every device, virtual machine, kiosk, and managed image still reporting version 20H2. Record the edition, architecture, OS build, hardware model, firmware state, encryption status, management platform, installed security agents, and business owner.
2. Test Windows 11 compatibility
For supported hardware, plan migration to a supported Windows 11 Enterprise release using the organization’s normal management platform. Depending on the environment, that may include:
- Microsoft Intune
- Configuration Manager
- Windows Update for Business
- Windows Autopatch where applicable
- Existing task-sequence, imaging, or deployment infrastructure
Do not assume every 20H2 device can upgrade in place. Check hardware requirements, firmware and security configuration, drivers, disk capacity, application compatibility, identity integration, VPN clients, endpoint-security tools, peripherals, and licensing rights.
3. Choose in-place upgrade, reimage, or replacement
- In-place upgrade: can preserve applications and user data when edition, architecture, language, policy, and compatibility conditions are satisfied.
- Reimage or reprovision: may be safer when the existing installation is heavily customized, corrupted, or poorly documented.
- Hardware replacement: is often the cleanest route when the device fails Windows 11 requirements or has an unsupported firmware and driver profile.
4. Handle devices that cannot run Windows 11
Evaluate hardware replacement and application modernization first. For a specialized workload, assess whether a properly licensed and supported Windows Enterprise LTSC release genuinely fits the device. LTSC is not a general-purpose escape route.
If a legacy system must remain temporarily, document it as a formal risk exception. Apply network segmentation, application allowlisting, restricted administration, strong monitoring, offline or controlled update procedures, and compensating controls appropriate to the workload. These measures reduce exposure but do not change Microsoft’s unsupported status for 20H2.

Licensing, activation, and pricing
Windows 10 Enterprise was generally obtained through organizational licensing programs, subscription-based enterprise rights, or qualifying commercial licensing arrangements rather than an ordinary consumer retail purchase.
A valid product key or digital entitlement may activate Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2, but activation does not restore lifecycle support. Licensing rights, activation, and security servicing are separate matters.
There is no meaningful universal retail price for “Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2.” Commercial pricing varies by country, agreement, user or device metric, qualifying license, and whether Windows is included in a broader Microsoft 365 or enterprise licensing arrangement. Current commercial decisions should begin with official Windows 11 Enterprise, Microsoft 365 Enterprise, Intune, or deployment-service documentation—not with unofficial listings for obsolete 20H2 media.

Organizations using Enterprise editions could connect Windows 10 to capabilities such as:
- Windows Autopilot provisioning
- Configuration Manager and Microsoft Deployment Toolkit deployment
- Windows Update for Business policy control
- WSUS servicing
- Delivery Optimization
- Update Compliance and related reporting
- Mobile-device-management policies, including Local Users and Groups
- Microsoft Defender Application Guard for Office
- Windows Hello and virtualization-based security on supported hardware
- Windows Sandbox policy management
These are capabilities of Microsoft’s enterprise Windows management ecosystem. They should not be interpreted as proof that every feature was exclusive to 20H2 or that the release remains suitable for current deployment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing 20H2 with LTSC: they are different servicing channels and product identities.
- Assuming activation means support: an activated installation can still be years out of support.
- Using the 19042 number as a security check: it identifies the obsolete 20H2 branch, not a current patch level.
- Applying KB4562830 indiscriminately: the historical package was intended for applicable Windows 10 version-2004 systems.
- Waiting for Windows Update to offer an upgrade: deferral policies, WSUS approvals, compatibility safeguards, hardware checks, and management policies can block or delay an offer.
- Assuming offline means safe: isolated systems still require vulnerability management, controlled servicing, segmentation, and application controls.
- Installing an ISO labeled 20H2 because it is convenient: old media may be unpatched, altered, or distributed without legitimate licensing.
- Treating LTSC as a universal fallback: its restricted servicing model is designed for specialized workloads, not every office endpoint.
Bottom line
Windows 10 Enterprise version 20H2 was a legitimate October 2020 release, but it has been unsupported since May 9, 2023. Verify the version with winver, inventory affected systems, and move compatible devices to a supported Windows 11 Enterprise release. Replace incompatible hardware or evaluate a properly licensed specialized platform for fixed-purpose systems; do not treat 20H2, activation, or ordinary ESU as a current security solution.
