No—the standard Google Pixel 4a did not receive an official Android 14 update. Google’s support period for it ended in August 2023, before Android 14 began rolling out. The similarly named Pixel 4a (5G) is a different phone and is included on Google’s Android 14 device list.
No: the standard Pixel 4a is not eligible for Android 14
Google’s Android 14 device list names the Pixel 4a (5G), but not the standard Pixel 4a. The regular Pixel 4a therefore has no official Android 14 over-the-air update. Google’s current Pixel software-update page lists the Pixel 4a among devices that no longer receive Android version or security updates.
The standard Pixel 4a’s last officially supported major Android version was Android 13. Google included it in its Android 13 Pixel update announcement. A phone’s ability to run newer software in theory does not change Google’s official eligibility list.

Why the Pixel 4a missed Android 14
When the Pixel 4a launched, Google promised at least three years of Android version and security updates from the phone’s availability on the Google Store in the United States. Its support window ended in August 2023. Android 14 began rolling out to supported Pixel phones in October 2023, after that window had closed.

Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a (5G) are not interchangeable

Listings and search results sometimes shorten both model names to “Pixel 4a,” which can lead to a misleading answer. If you are checking your own phone or evaluating a used one, verify the exact model under Settings → About phone. Do not rely only on a seller’s listing or the phone’s appearance.

What was the Pixel 4a update in January 2025?
Some Pixel 4a owners received a later update because Google introduced a battery-related program. That update, which began rolling out on January 8, 2025, was an automatic update to Android 13 with battery-management changes—not Android 14 and not a return to normal software support. Google describes the program and its update details on the Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program page, which gives January 8, 2026 as the program’s end date.

An update notification can also refer to a delayed installation or a Google Play system update. Those are not the same as upgrading the phone’s main Android version. To see what is installed, open Settings → About phone and check Android version, Android security update and Google Play system update separately.

How to check for any remaining official update
- Open Settings.
- Tap System → Software update.
- Follow the prompts if an update is offered.
Menu wording can vary slightly by software version or region. An offered Android 13 update does not make the standard Pixel 4a eligible for Android 14.

Google does not offer an official Android 14 update for the standard Pixel 4a. Android’s Android Flash Tool is not a workaround for unsupported hardware; it cannot make this model officially eligible.

Advanced owners may encounter unofficial custom-ROM projects, but those are community software, not Google-supported firmware. Installing one can require unlocking the bootloader, wiping the phone and manually flashing files. Compatibility and ongoing maintenance vary; features such as the camera, modem, DRM or banking and enterprise apps may not work as expected, and using the wrong files or steps can leave the phone unusable. A custom ROM should not be treated as a simple upgrade or as a guarantee of complete, current security support. Check a project’s current device list and release notes before considering it.
Should you keep using a Pixel 4a?
The phone may still work for everyday tasks, and the lack of updates does not mean it becomes unusable overnight. But it no longer receives Google’s normal Android version or security updates. App updates from Google Play do not replace missing Android and device security patches.
- Keeping it as a low-risk secondary phone: May be reasonable if its apps still work, the hardware is reliable and you accept the absence of current security updates.
- Using it for banking, payments, work accounts or sensitive information: Replacing it with a device still within its update-support period is the safer choice.
- Important apps no longer work, or the battery or hardware is unreliable: Those are practical reasons to replace it. App compatibility depends on each app’s requirements; not every app will stop working at once.
If you buy a replacement, check the exact model’s remaining update-support period before purchasing—especially for a used phone. A newer supported device addresses the software-support issue; a battery change alone does not extend Google’s update commitment.
