Monterey Wi‑Fi trouble can mean several different things: the Mac cannot turn Wi‑Fi on, it cannot join one network, it connects without internet, or the connection keeps dropping. Start by checking whether other devices work on the same network and whether your Mac works on a different one. That quick comparison helps separate a Mac problem from a router, ISP, or network-policy problem.

Start with the symptom

What you see First place to investigate Try first
Wi‑Fi is missing or will not turn on macOS configuration, extensions, or hardware Restart, then check System Preferences → Network
The Mac sees a network but cannot join it Password, saved profile, signal, or router access controls Re-enter the password and test another network
Wi‑Fi connects but websites do not load DHCP, DNS, VPN/security software, captive portal, router, or ISP Renew the DHCP lease and test without a VPN
Wi‑Fi is slow or drops Signal, interference, roaming, router firmware, or network-filtering software Test near the router and run Wireless Diagnostics
Only public or work Wi‑Fi fails Captive portal, certificate, or managed network policy Complete the login or contact the network administrator

Also note whether the problem began after a macOS update, a router change, an ISP outage, or installing a VPN or security app. A timing link is useful, but it does not prove the update caused the failure.

Check Monterey and your Mac model

Choose Apple menu → About This Mac to record the macOS version and Mac model. Apple lists macOS Monterey 12.7.6, released July 29, 2024, as the latest release in the Monterey branch—not as the latest macOS overall. See Apple’s macOS version guide and Monterey 12.7.6 security information.

Isolate the Mac from the network

  1. Test another device on the affected Wi‑Fi. If every device is offline, focus on the router, modem, ISP, or network operator.
  2. Connect the Mac to a phone hotspot or another known-working Wi‑Fi network. If it works there, the original router, ISP, captive portal, or network policy is more likely than a general Mac failure.
  3. If the Mac fails on several unrelated networks, investigate its settings, software, or hardware.

A full Wi‑Fi signal only means the Mac has a strong radio connection to the access point; it does not prove the router has internet service.

Try the low-risk fixes first

  1. Reconnect once: Turn Wi‑Fi off, wait several seconds, turn it back on, select the intended network, and enter its password carefully. If a router broadcasts separate 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz names, test each one.
  2. Restart the Mac: This can clear a temporary connection state and prompt macOS to request network information again.
  3. Check date and time: Set them automatically in System Preferences. An incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections and authentication.
  4. Restart the router or access point: Follow the manufacturer’s procedure, including for mesh nodes. Check for firmware updates. Do not factory-reset it unless you have the ISP credentials and the information needed to restore its settings.
  5. Check VPN and security tools: Temporarily quit or disable one VPN, firewall, antivirus, content filter, or network-monitoring component at a time, then test again. Re-enable protection after the test. Do not remove a managed work security agent without administrator guidance.

These checks follow Apple’s recommended sequence for troubleshooting a Mac that cannot connect to the internet over Wi‑Fi.

If the Mac joins Wi‑Fi but has no internet

Renew the DHCP lease

DHCP lets the router assign the Mac a local network address. If the address is missing, expired, or conflicting, the Mac may appear connected while traffic fails. In Monterey:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Apple menu → System Preferences → Network.
  2. Select Wi‑Fi, then click Advanced.
  3. Open the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease.
  4. Click OK, then Apply if it appears. Test again.

Renewing DHCP addresses an address-assignment problem; it will not repair weak signal, failed Wi‑Fi authentication, a broken router, DNS failure, an ISP outage, or defective hardware.

Distinguish DNS trouble from a broader outage

DNS translates names such as a website’s domain into network addresses. If the Mac has a valid network address and can reach network services by address but cannot resolve domain names, DNS is a reasonable next area to investigate. If it cannot reach anything, look first at Wi‑Fi association, DHCP, routing, or the router/ISP.

Changing to a public DNS provider is not a universal fix. It may bypass a failing DNS server, but it can interfere with workplace settings, parental controls, local device names, or expected privacy and filtering policies. On a managed network, ask the administrator before changing DNS.

Captive portals are another possibility on hotels, airports, cafés, and libraries: join the network, open a browser, and complete the sign-in page. If the portal does not appear, ask the operator rather than changing network security settings at random.

If the Mac cannot join or repeatedly forgets one network

For a stale saved profile, remove that network and join it again. In Monterey, open System Preferences → Network → Wi‑Fi → Advanced, select the affected preferred network, remove it, and apply the change. Reconnect and enter the password. Labels can vary slightly by Monterey build or on a managed Mac.

  • This network transceiver supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14

Removing a saved network also removes its stored password and may discard custom settings. School, workplace, and enterprise networks may need certificates, configuration profiles, or administrator-issued credentials; get help before removing a managed profile.

If the password is correct but only this network fails, check the router for device access controls, parental controls, MAC-address filtering, device limits, or an exhausted DHCP address pool. Update router firmware and review Apple’s recommended Wi‑Fi router and access-point settings. The right band, channel, and security mode depend on the router, nearby interference, and the Mac’s wireless hardware—there is no setting that is best for every network.

If Wi‑Fi drops or performs poorly

  • Test in the same room as the router. If performance improves, distance, walls, or interference may be involved.
  • Compare 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz networks if the router exposes them separately. Their range and interference characteristics differ.
  • Move away from possible interference sources such as appliances, cordless phones, and dense neighboring networks.
  • Update router firmware. If the problem occurs mainly while moving around a mesh network, test near the main router or with a node bypassed according to the vendor’s instructions.
  • If drops occur after sleep or waking, note the pattern and test another network; do not assume that a Monterey update is the cause.

Use Apple’s built-in Wi‑Fi tools

Wi‑Fi Recommendations: Click the Wi‑Fi icon in Control Center or the menu bar and look for Wi‑Fi Recommendations. Follow any suggestion shown. Apple notes that Recommendations are not available for personal hotspots and some enterprise security protocols, including WPA Enterprise and WPA2 Enterprise.

Escalate carefully if basic checks fail

These steps can help determine whether the fault is limited to one user profile or caused by third-party software, but they are not first-line fixes:

  • Create a new network location in System Preferences → Network → Location and test it. Custom network settings may need to be recreated.
  • Test in Safe Mode to check whether startup software or extensions are involved. The startup procedure differs between Intel and Apple-silicon Macs; follow Apple’s instructions for your model.
  • Try a temporary macOS user account. If Wi‑Fi works there, the issue may be specific to the original account.
  • Run Apple Diagnostics if hardware failure is plausible. Back up before reinstalling macOS or changing system configuration.

Avoid deleting random Wi‑Fi preference files as a routine fix: it can erase configuration without addressing the cause. Likewise, disabling privacy features such as a private Wi‑Fi address is not a general cure; only test such a change when a specific network’s registration or access-control system calls for it.

When hardware or outside support is more likely

Contact Apple or a qualified repair provider if Wi‑Fi is absent from Network preferences, cannot be enabled, fails on multiple known-good networks, or diagnostics indicate a hardware fault. Combined Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth failures, physical or liquid damage, and problems that persist after a clean software test also justify service. If only one network fails, contact its administrator or ISP first. A USB Wi‑Fi adapter is not a guaranteed workaround: Monterey driver support, compatibility, and security vary by adapter.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

  1. Check whether other devices work on the same network.
  2. Test the Mac on a hotspot or another known-working Wi‑Fi network.
  3. Restart the Mac and router; verify date and time.
  4. Install available Monterey updates.
  5. Renew the DHCP lease if connected without internet.
  6. Temporarily test without VPN or third-party network filters.
  7. Forget and rejoin the network if one saved network is affected.
  8. Run Wireless Diagnostics and share its report with the right support contact.
  9. Escalate to the ISP/network administrator for network-wide problems, or Apple/repair service for persistent Mac-side failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does renewing the DHCP lease delete anything?

It requests a fresh local network address from the router; it does not remove your saved Wi‑Fi password or files.

Should I delete Wi‑Fi preference files?

Not as a first-line fix. Deleting configuration files can erase useful settings and does not reliably address router, DNS, signal, or hardware faults.

Why does Wi‑Fi work on a hotspot but not at home?

That points toward the home router, ISP, saved profile, access controls, or router compatibility. Check other devices on the home network and review its router settings.

Is Monterey 12.7.6 the latest Monterey version?

Apple lists 12.7.6 as the latest release in the Monterey branch. It is not the latest macOS branch overall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I suspect a failed Wi‑Fi card?

If Wi‑Fi is missing or cannot be enabled, fails across multiple known-good networks, or diagnostics indicate hardware trouble, seek Apple or qualified repair support.
