That destination fetches title, description and image metadata, then may cache the result or choose not to display an image. An unfinished upload, private visibility, metadata changed after the first share, stale cache, or the recipient app’s own limits can all produce a text-only link.
Use this order: confirm the video is fully processed and public, set the final title and thumbnail, share the URL again, then refresh the destination’s cache if it offers a debugger. Facebook and X have documented tools; WhatsApp, Messenger, Discord and other apps can behave differently.
What actually creates the preview
When you paste a YouTube URL into another service, that service’s crawler requests information about the page. It may use Open Graph tags, YouTube’s integration, or an oEmbed response. The oEmbed specification defines an optional thumbnail_url field, so a thumbnail can be available without being mandatory. The receiving app decides whether to fetch it, which fields to show and how long to cache them.
That is why the same URL can show an image in one destination and only a title or plain link in another. A 2020 NDSS study found that, in its controlled tests, 11 of 20 platforms could omit an image in cases where image metadata was unavailable, and no preview field appeared on every tested platform. Those observations describe the tested platforms and conditions, not a current guarantee about any particular app.

YouTube’s own preview is a different feature
YouTube also offers short, three-second previews on some YouTube surfaces. Its eligibility and display rules are described in YouTube’s video-preview help page. Those clips do not control the link card generated by Facebook, WhatsApp, X, Messenger or another site.
Fix the YouTube-side causes first
- Wait for processing to finish. A newly uploaded video may not yet have all metadata available to external crawlers. Open YouTube Studio and confirm processing has completed.
- Make the video public. YouTube specifically lists a private video as a possible reason for wrong or outdated information on Facebook and X. Unlisted links may also receive different treatment from individual services; check the destination’s current rules.
- Set final metadata before sharing. Confirm the title, description and custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s guidance is to make the video processed, public and its metadata set before pasting the link elsewhere; see YouTube’s troubleshooting article.
- Copy the canonical URL again. Use the normal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...address or the current Shorts URL, rather than a partially edited message or a link with tracking parameters that the destination may parse differently. - Paste it into a new message or post. If the first fetch happened before processing or before the thumbnail was saved, the destination may retain that early response.
Why changing the thumbnail may not change an old post
Most link cards are cached. The receiving service may have stored the title, description and image when you first pasted the URL. Changing artwork or text in YouTube does not automatically rewrite an already-created card. YouTube warns that later metadata changes may leave old Facebook or X information unchanged until those services fetch the page again.
Refreshing a composer preview is not the same as editing a published post. Delete and repost only when that is acceptable; otherwise use the platform’s documented refresh mechanism and wait for its cache to update. YouTube does not promise a universal refresh time.
Destination-specific checks
For Facebook, YouTube directs users to Facebook’s Sharing Debugger. Submit the exact URL, inspect the fetched title, description and image, and use the available re-scrape option. The debugger can update what Facebook fetches, but it cannot make Facebook display an image when the service decides not to show one.

YouTube points to the X Card Validator for X posts. Validate the URL after the video is public and its metadata is final. If the card is still stale, allow X to recrawl it; a validator result does not guarantee that every client or post composer will render an image identically.
WhatsApp, Messenger, Discord and other apps
Do not apply Facebook or X instructions as if they were universal. These services can fetch at different times, suppress previews for privacy or performance, or use their own YouTube integration. Test the same URL in a fresh conversation and on another device or account. If it works elsewhere, the evidence points to destination behavior or cache state rather than the video file itself. Consult the app’s current help for any supported link-preview reset.

Common mistakes that waste time
- Confusing a YouTube watch-page preview with a shared card: the three-second YouTube feature is unrelated to another app’s link card.
- Changing artwork repeatedly: repeated edits do not force a destination to discard its cache.
- Assuming a valid image URL guarantees display: the oEmbed field is optional and each consumer controls rendering.
- Testing only your own account: logged-in sessions, prior cache entries and privacy settings can change what you see.
- Expecting a universal refresh button: YouTube documents Facebook and X tools specifically, not a reset for every service.
Performance and reliability considerations
External crawlers need to reach the page without an authentication wall, bot challenge or transient outage. A public video that opens normally in a logged-out browser is the best starting condition, but it still does not oblige a destination to show an image. Caches improve speed and reduce repeated fetches, at the cost of delaying metadata changes. For time-sensitive launches, publish and verify the final thumbnail before distributing the URL, then validate the card in the target platform.

Contact YouTube if the video is public but cannot be opened reliably, processing never completes, or Studio will not save metadata. Contact the destination app if its debugger retrieves the correct image but the published card remains wrong, or if previews fail only for your account or workspace. Include the exact URL, destination, time of sharing, device and app version, and whether a fresh logged-out test reproduces the issue.

Why does the link work on YouTube but not in a chat app?
Opening the watch page and generating a chat preview are separate operations. The chat app must fetch and choose to render the metadata.
