A custom thumbnail is the still image you upload. A video preview is YouTube’s automatically selected, three-second moving clip. Fixing a missing or stale still image involves YouTube Studio, account eligibility, file requirements, and propagation time. A missing moving clip may simply mean YouTube did not select that video for previews; uploading a larger image cannot force it.
Use the symptom-first steps below, because the remedies are different.
First identify what is actually missing
- Still image missing or old: the custom-thumbnail upload, save state, account verification, image requirements, policy review, surface behavior, or propagation is the likely cause.
- Moving clip does not play: you are checking YouTube’s separate video-preview feature, whose eligibility is selective.
- An explicit upload error appears: diagnose the error itself instead of repeatedly changing the image.
Check the same video while signed in to the channel that owns it, then compare the video page with Home, search, Subscriptions, or other surfaces. A discrepancy on only one surface can be normal presentation behavior rather than a failed upload.
Fix a custom thumbnail that is missing or stale
1. Save the image on the intended video
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the exact video, then stay on its Details page.
- In Thumbnail, choose Upload file or select the intended frame.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Save. Reopen the video afterward to confirm the selected image is still shown in Studio.
YouTube documents the Studio workflow and saving behavior in Upload YouTube videos – Computer and Add custom thumbnails on YouTube – Computer. Editing a different upload, closing the page before saving, or checking a different channel are common reasons an apparently correct image never appears.

2. Confirm custom-thumbnail eligibility
YouTube says custom thumbnails are available when the account is verified. Check verification in your channel’s feature-eligibility settings before troubleshooting the file itself. A thumbnail can also be rejected or have thumbnail privileges affected when it violates Community Guidelines; changing dimensions will not bypass a policy restriction. Review the policy section of YouTube’s custom-thumbnail help if Studio displays a rejection or warning.
3. Export a compliant image
Use JPG or PNG unless your workflow requires another format explicitly supported by Studio. Keep the image at the recommended aspect ratio and within the device-specific size limit:

The dimensions and limits above are the current values in YouTube Help; the mobile and desktop limits are not interchangeable. A 50 MB file is allowed for desktop Studio uploads, but not for ordinary mobile video-thumbnail uploads. Compress an oversized file or upload it from a desktop rather than assuming the API limit applies to the app.

4. Allow for propagation
After you save a valid image, YouTube may still show the previous one temporarily. YouTube’s wording is precise: “It may take time for your thumbnail changes to appear on YouTube.” It does not publish a fixed number of minutes or hours on the help page, so do not treat a particular waiting period as a guarantee. Check again later from a private window or another signed-out surface, but do not keep re-uploading the same file while an update is processing.
When a vertical video appears to have the wrong thumbnail
For a vertical video, YouTube can generate a 4:5 thumbnail for Home, Explore, and Subscriptions when your uploaded custom image is 16:9. The 16:9 custom thumbnail can remain visible in other listed contexts, including the watch page. If the image is correct in Studio and on the watch page but looks different only in those feeds, this is surface-specific presentation, not evidence that the upload failed. For Shorts, use the separate computer-based thumbnail workflow described by YouTube rather than assuming the standard-video mobile steps apply.
Fix a missing moving video preview
What YouTube’s preview is
A video preview is an automatically selected three-second motion clip. It is not the custom still image and is not a replacement for one. YouTube says previews are available for most videos longer than 30 seconds, but not every video. “We use several criteria, including video topic and content, to figure out what videos can have previews.” There is no creator setting that guarantees selection.

Where previews can appear
YouTube identifies Home, Subscriptions, watch pages, and search results as preview surfaces. Browser support in the help documentation includes selected desktop versions of Chrome (version 32 and up) and Opera (version 19 and up); browser support can change, so verify the current help page when diagnosing a browser-specific case. A preview may be absent on one surface even when it is available on another.
Use the two-day eligibility test
If no preview appears within two days, YouTube’s guidance says, “If you don’t see a preview for a video within 2 days, the video isn’t currently eligible.” Re-uploading the custom image, increasing its resolution, or clearing a browser cache cannot force eligibility. Keep a compliant custom still thumbnail in place so the video has a normal fallback image.
Separate Studio uploads from Data API errors
Applications that set thumbnails through the YouTube Data API use a different path and different limits than Studio. The thumbnails.set endpoint accepts JPEG, PNG, or application/octet-stream media, with a maximum upload size of 50 MB. The documented quota cost is approximately 50 units per call. That 50 MB API maximum does not replace the 2 MB mobile Studio limit.

Match the error to the cause
- Invalid image: verify that the media is a readable JPEG or PNG, not a renamed or corrupted file.
- Missing media body: send the binary file in the request body and set the appropriate content type.
- Authorization or permission failure: use OAuth credentials for a channel that owns the target video and request the required YouTube scope.
- Video not found: check the video ID, visibility, and channel associated with the credentials.
- Upload rate limit exceeded: slow the queue and retry according to your API backoff policy rather than sending an uncontrolled burst.
Resource metadata and resizing behavior are described in YouTube’s thumbnail resource reference. Keep API diagnostics separate from the normal Studio interface: a successful API upload still may take time to propagate on public surfaces.
A symptom-based troubleshooting checklist
- Still or motion? Confirm whether the complaint is about a static image or a three-second clip.
- Right video and channel? In Studio, open the intended video under Content and verify its Thumbnail setting.
- Saved? Select Save, reopen the video, and confirm the image remains selected.
- Verified account? Confirm custom-thumbnail access before changing the asset.
- Valid file? Check JPG/PNG, ratio, dimensions, and the limit for the device used.
- Surface mismatch? For vertical videos, check whether only Home, Explore, or Subscriptions is showing YouTube’s 4:5 version.
- Policy notice? Resolve any Community Guidelines or thumbnail-privilege warning.
- Propagation? Allow unspecified processing time instead of promising an exact cache interval.
- Preview eligibility? For motion previews, check that the video is longer than 30 seconds and wait up to two days; no preview after that means YouTube currently considers it ineligible.
- Exact error? If the message is “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached,” YouTube advises trying again in 24 hours. Limits can vary by country or region and channel history.
