Twitter is now called X, but “Twitter won’t let me log in” can describe several different problems: a rejected password, temporary security lock, missing two-factor code, broken browser or app session, compromised account, or suspension. Match the exact message or symptom below before trying random fixes.
Start at the official X login page. If you see “Locked out!”, stop trying passwords and wait; if the issue is a password or 2FA failure, use the matching recovery route instead.
Quick diagnosis: find your exact X login problem
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| “Incorrect password” | Wrong password, account identifier, autofill entry, or a changed password | Use X’s password-reset flow |
| “Locked out!” | Too many failed sign-in attempts | Stop attempting login and wait about an hour |
| No reset email or text | Wrong identifier, filtering, delivery delay, or inaccessible recovery method | Check every mail folder and try another identifier |
| No 2FA code | Unavailable phone, authenticator, security key, or backup code | Choose another method or use the 2FA recovery form |
| “Verify your account” | Security check or suspicious activity | Complete the requested email, phone, or CAPTCHA verification |
| Suspended or limited account | Account-status restriction | Follow the notice or submit an appeal; a password reset will not remove it |
| Works on desktop but not the app | App data, network, VPN, or mobile-session problem | Update the app, test mobile web, and isolate the network |
| Login loops or will not load | Cookies, JavaScript, extensions, VPN, or network trouble | Try a private window and another network |
Try this five-minute fix first
- Navigate directly to x.com/login rather than using a link in an unsolicited email or direct message.
- Try a private or incognito browser window.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, proxy, ad blocker, privacy extension, or script blocker.
- Try another up-to-date browser and, if possible, cellular data instead of Wi-Fi.
- Confirm that cookies and JavaScript are enabled.
- If the password is rejected, start one password reset rather than repeatedly guessing.
If X displays a temporary lockout message, do not continue this checklist. Repeated attempts can prolong the lock.

A rejected password does not always mean the password itself is wrong. Autofill may be entering an old password or credentials for another account, the keyboard may be changing a character, or someone may have changed the password.

Use X’s password recovery procedure and try the account’s:
- username;
- email address; or
- phone number.
If several X accounts use the same phone number, phone-based recovery may be ambiguous or unavailable. Try the username or email address instead. X documents the password-reset code as valid for 60 minutes; use the newest code and avoid requesting several codes in quick succession.
When you successfully reset the password, expect active X sessions on other devices to require sign-in again. If the new password still fails, try another browser or computer, accept cookies, clear X-related cache and cookies, and then contact X through its login-help flow.
If you forgot your username, email address, or phone number
Try the identifiers in this order:
- Test each email address you may have used with X.
- Try a remembered username with the password you think is correct.
- Use the reset form with possible usernames, email addresses, and phone numbers.
- Search every likely inbox for messages from X, including spam, junk, promotions, and social folders.
- Check whether you are already signed in through the X app, mobile website, X Pro, or another browser.
An active session may show the username or allow you to update the email address before you lose access. Without access to the associated email or phone number, recovery options are limited. X says support may be able to help in some situations—for example, where you know the password but lost email access and have no mobile number—but recovery is not guaranteed.
If the password-reset email or text never arrives
- Search your inbox for messages from X instead of waiting for a notification.
- Check spam, junk, promotions, and social folders.
- Request recovery using the account’s email address when possible.
- If the email is uncertain, try the username or phone number instead.
- If SMS is delayed or unavailable, use email recovery.
- Do not submit repeated requests within a short period.
If you have confirmed the correct email address and still receive nothing, use the support link in X’s login-help page. Do not give your password or verification code to anyone claiming to provide paid recovery.

If X says “Locked out!”
This usually means X has temporarily limited sign-in attempts after repeated failures. It is not automatically a permanent ban, and even the correct password may fail during the lock.
X says the lock generally clears automatically after about one hour. The timing is approximate, so:
- stop trying to sign in;
- stop requesting additional password resets; and
- wait before testing the direct X login page again.
If the lock continues, close or disable connected services that may still be sending old credentials, such as X Pro, Hootsuite, widgets, or other third-party clients. Wait another hour and test directly at X rather than through a third-party app. See X’s guidance on temporary lockouts.
If two-factor authentication is blocking access
SMS codes are not arriving
Check cellular service, turn off airplane mode, and make sure messages from X are not blocked. Wait several minutes before requesting another code. If email recovery is available, use it. If you are still signed in elsewhere, review your phone and 2FA settings before logging out.
Your authenticator-app code fails
Check the authenticator app on the old phone or restore it using the app’s supported backup. Confirm that the device clock is set automatically; time-based codes can fail when the clock is substantially wrong.

You lost a security key or need another method
Select “Choose a different two-factor authentication method” if X offers it. Try an enrolled alternate method or a saved backup code. Backup codes are one-use credentials, and an inactive or previously used code will not work.

Use a login-code generator from an active session
On an iOS or Android X app where you are already signed in, X documents this path:
- Settings and privacy
- Account
- Security
- Login code generator
Enter the displayed code on the device where you are trying to sign in. Menu names can vary as X updates its apps.
Temporary passwords
X says a temporary password may be needed for certain devices or applications after 2FA is enabled. On desktop, the documented path is More → Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Security → Two-factor authentication → Temporary password. Temporary passwords expire after one hour. They are not normally needed for the native X iOS app, Android app, or mobile.x.com.
If none of these methods works, submit X’s 2FA problem form. It asks for your username and a contact email and may require an account-ownership acknowledgment.

If X asks you to verify the account
A security lock can follow suspicious activity or a possible compromise. Complete the requested phone, email, or CAPTCHA verification and change the password if X permits it. This is different from a temporary failed-login lock and different from a suspension.
If your account may be hacked
Treat a compromise as possible if:
- your password suddenly stops working;
- you receive reset messages you did not request;
- the email address, phone number, username, or 2FA settings changed;
- an unfamiliar active session appears; or
- posts or direct messages were sent without your permission.
Use only official X pages. If you can still access the account, change the password, review active sessions, revoke unfamiliar third-party apps, confirm the email and phone number, and check recent posts and messages. Never enter credentials into a recovery link sent by an unknown account.
For additional guidance, see X’s account-security tips.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the account is limited or suspended
Limited account
A limited account may still allow some access while restricting posting, visibility, likes, reposts, or app functions. If you can use X in a browser but not post or use a particular feature, the problem may be an account restriction rather than an app login bug.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSuspended account
A suspension is an account-status issue, not a password problem. Read the notice shown after signing in and follow its identity-verification or restoration instructions. If you believe the suspension is mistaken, use X’s locked or suspended account appeal form. Do not assume an appeal will succeed or expect a specific response time, and avoid creating replacement accounts if that could violate X’s rules.

When login works on desktop but not in the app
- Test direct login at x.com from a computer.
- Update the X app and phone operating system when updates are available.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Try the mobile website to compare app and account behavior.
- Test Wi-Fi and cellular data separately.
- Disable a VPN temporarily.
- Clear the app’s stored data or reinstall it only after confirming you have the password and 2FA method.
Reinstalling can remove the local authenticated session and may leave you needing 2FA again. On a mobile browser, X recommends clearing cache and cookies, checking that JavaScript is enabled, and restarting the phone when connection problems persist.
See X’s mobile login guidance.
Browser, cookie, extension, and network troubleshooting
Change one variable at a time so you can identify the cause:
- Open x.com/login directly.
- Try a private window.
- Disable a VPN or proxy.
- Try another network, such as cellular data instead of Wi-Fi.
- Confirm JavaScript is enabled and cookies are accepted.
- Clear X-related cache and cookies.
- Disable extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and password-manager overlays.
- Try another current browser.
If private browsing works, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the conflict. Clearing cookies can fix stale sessions or cookie conflicts, but it also signs you out of local web sessions. X’s broader web troubleshooting guidance covers these steps and third-party access.

- Change the password to a unique password that is not used elsewhere.
- Confirm the account email address and phone number.
- Review active sessions and sign out unfamiliar devices.
- Revoke unknown third-party apps.
- Re-enroll 2FA if its settings may have changed.
- Generate backup codes and store them offline.
- Check recent posts, direct messages, profile changes, and account settings.
- Use the genuine X domain before entering credentials.
A password manager can help prevent future password mistakes, but it cannot bypass a security lock, 2FA requirement, suspension, or ownership check. Be especially wary of paid “account recovery” services: legitimate recovery is handled through X’s own account-access systems, and no reputable helper needs your password or one-time codes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does X say my password is wrong when I know it is correct?
Autofill may be supplying an old password or credentials for another account, or the password may have been changed. Use X’s official reset flow with the username, email address, or phone number associated with the account.
Can I log in without my old phone?
Possibly. Try an authenticator app, backup code, alternate enrolled 2FA method, or a login-code generator from an active session. If none is available, use X’s official 2FA problem form.
Can X support unlock my account?
Support may help in some recovery situations, but access is not guaranteed—especially when you cannot access the associated email or phone or cannot demonstrate account ownership.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is a Twitter/X login-recovery service legitimate?
Treat paid recovery offers as a scam risk. Use only official X pages and never share your password, backup codes, or verification codes.
