If Xbox messages will not send, first check Xbox service status, then test a different recipient. A failure with everyone points more often to an outage, account restriction, privacy setting, sign-in problem, or network issue. A failure with only one person is more likely to involve that recipient’s settings, account, or the specific conversation.
Start with this quick diagnostic
- Check the live Xbox Status page for communications, social, account, or Xbox Live problems.
- Send a short neutral message, such as “Can you see this?”, to a trusted second contact.
- Check Xbox Enforcement for a communication restriction or notice.
- Review your console’s communication privacy settings.
- Sign out, restart the console or app, and sign back in.
- Try messaging from another Xbox client, such as the console, Xbox mobile app, or Xbox app for Windows.
- Test another network if the problem appears network-specific.
- If nothing helps, contact Xbox Support with the exact error details.
If Xbox services are experiencing an outage, local resets will not repair the problem. Wait for Microsoft to restore service and avoid repeatedly sending the same message, since delayed retries can potentially create duplicates.
Identify what is actually failing
Note whether the message remains stuck on “Sending” or immediately displays “Message not sent.” Also check whether:
- You can receive messages but cannot send them.
- The problem affects one recipient or everyone.
- Party chat fails as well as text messaging.
- The issue occurs on an Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox 360, Xbox mobile app, or Xbox app for Windows.
- You are signed in on multiple devices or using multiple profiles on the same console.

Check account enforcement
An Xbox enforcement action can restrict communications without necessarily preventing you from signing in. Restrictions may be temporary or longer-lasting, depending on the action. Check the Xbox Enforcement portal and the official explanation of Xbox enforcement actions.

If the enforcement interface offers an appeal or case-review option, use the process shown there. Not every restriction is necessarily appealable. Do not create another account to evade a restriction or repeatedly contact someone through alternate accounts; that can create further enforcement problems.
Review communication and family settings
On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, the current path is generally:
Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → Account → Privacy & online safety → Xbox privacy → View details & customize → Communication & multiplayer

Review the setting for communication by voice and text and make sure it is not set to Block. Menu names can change with Xbox software updates, so use Microsoft’s online safety and privacy settings guide if the labels differ.
For a child account, a parent or Microsoft family organizer may control these permissions. The child account may not be able to change them independently. Also verify that you are using the intended Xbox profile; different profiles on one console can have different settings or enforcement status.
Check the recipient—but do not assume you were blocked
The recipient may have blocked you, limited communications through privacy settings, use a family-managed account, changed accounts, or have an account problem. However, a failed message does not prove that the recipient blocked you. Xbox may not disclose the precise reason for a recipient-side failure.

Message a trusted second contact. If that message sends, the original recipient or conversation is the likely source. If both messages fail, investigate your account, Xbox services, settings, app, and network instead. You cannot change another player’s privacy or enforcement settings.

Xbox console
- Quit the conversation.
- Open Profile & system → Sign out.
- Restart the console.
- Sign back in and try a short message to another contact.
- Install any pending console update if one is offered.
A factory reset is not an appropriate early fix. It cannot remove an enforcement action, change the recipient’s settings, or repair an Xbox-wide outage.
Xbox mobile or Windows app
- Force-close the app and reopen it.
- Confirm that the intended Microsoft account is signed in.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Update the app through its relevant app store.
- Try the same conversation on the console or another available Xbox client.
- Reinstall the app only if the simpler steps fail.
If messaging works on the console but not in the app, the problem is probably app-specific rather than an account-wide communication restriction. Reinstalling may affect local drafts or cached data, so do not assume every unsent local item will be preserved.

Test the network without blaming NAT first
General internet access does not rule out an Xbox service or account problem. Text messages use Xbox and Microsoft online services, so a network issue is possible, but NAT problems are more commonly associated with multiplayer and party chat than with one failed text message.
- On the console, open Settings → General → Network settings and run the available network test.
- Restart the router and console.
- If practical, test a phone hotspot or another network.
- If messaging works elsewhere, investigate the home router, DNS filtering, parental controls, VPN, or ISP connection.
Do not make port forwarding or DNS changes the first response. Consider advanced network changes only after an alternate-network test demonstrates that the failure is specific to the home connection.

Open Microsoft account security and check for required verification, password-reset prompts, unusual sign-in activity, or a locked or suspended account. If you recently changed the password, sign out of Xbox and sign in again. If the account may be compromised, secure it before continuing to troubleshoot messaging.

Test the message content
Rapid-fire or highly repetitive messages may trigger spam protections. Abusive, threatening, or otherwise prohibited content can be blocked or lead to enforcement. Unusual characters, excessive length, or copied formatting can also expose an app or conversation bug.
Try a short, ordinary message. If it sends while the original does not, rewrite the message or start a new conversation. Do not attempt to disguise prohibited content or bypass moderation systems.
Xbox 360 users: use separate legacy guidance
Microsoft has a documented “Message not sent” page for Xbox 360. It is legacy guidance under the Xbox 360 section and should not be treated as a universal solution for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or current Xbox app failures.
When to contact Xbox Support
Contact Xbox Support after checking status, enforcement, settings, another client, and another network. Provide:
- The exact error text or code.
- Your console model and Xbox software version, or the app platform and version.
- Whether the failure affects one contact or everyone.
- Whether receiving messages and party chat work.
- Whether Xbox Status reports an incident.
- Whether the problem occurs on another device or network.
- Any enforcement notice that appears.
Support may help diagnose your account or client, but it cannot be expected to reveal another player’s privacy settings or enforcement status.
