Usually, an app that “won’t go full screen” is either only maximized, is using a separate in-app control, or does not support full screen on that device. Start by identifying what you see, then follow the steps for your platform. Black bars or a narrow layout can be intentional and may not indicate a fault.
First, identify what “full screen” means here
Full screen is not one universal mode. A maximized window fills the available desktop area but may leave the taskbar, Dock, menu bar, or title bar visible. True operating-system full screen hides some system controls and may place the app in its own workspace. Borderless full screen, common in games, fills the display without necessarily using the operating system’s formal full-screen mode. A video or document can also have its own full-screen control that affects only the app’s content.
| What you see | Likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Title bar and window borders | The window may simply need to be maximized. |
| The app fills most of the screen, but the taskbar, Dock, or menu bar remains | It may be maximized rather than in true full screen. |
| A video has an expand icon | Use the player’s control, not just the browser’s window control. |
| Black bars around a video or app | The content may be preserving its aspect ratio. |
| A narrow, phone-shaped app on a tablet | The app may not have a tablet-optimized layout. |
| Window controls appear on a tablet or connected display | The device may be using windowed or desktop multitasking. |
| Full screen starts and then disappears | A notification, overlay, display change, or app setting may be interrupting it. |
Try these checks first
- Click or tap inside the app so it has focus.
- Look for the app’s own Full screen, Maximize, Expand, or diagonal-arrow control. For video, use the video player’s control.
- Try the platform-specific steps below. Shortcuts such as
F11orAlt+Enterwork only in apps that support them; they are not universal. - Close and reopen the app, then check for app and operating-system updates.
- Test another app. If only one app has the problem, suspect its settings, design, or compatibility. If every app does, check the device’s windowing and display settings.
- If practical, disconnect an external monitor, dock, screen-sharing tool, or overlay temporarily and test again.
Windows
Maximize the window first
For an ordinary desktop app, click the square Maximize button in the title bar or double-click the title bar. If the button is missing, open the window’s title-bar menu and look for a maximize option. A maximized Windows window normally leaves the taskbar visible; that does not necessarily mean maximizing failed.

Check the app’s display controls
Games, media players, design tools, and remote desktop apps may have separate choices such as Full screen, Windowed, Borderless windowed, or Fit to screen. F11 is common in browsers and some apps, while Alt+Enter is common in games, but either command may do nothing in an app that does not support it.

Exclusive full screen can sometimes suit a game or app that needs direct display control, but it may be less convenient with multiple monitors, overlays, screen capture, or frequent task switching. Borderless windowed mode is often easier to switch away from, though it may behave differently with scaling or system UI. If one mode fails, try the other option in the app’s display settings.
Check the display setup
If the app is on the wrong monitor, appears unusually small, or changes size after docking, check which display is primary and whether the app is opening on the intended screen. Temporarily set the monitor to its recommended resolution and scale, then relaunch the app. Also test without a dock or secondary display. If the problem began after changing refresh rate, HDR, orientation, resolution, or scaling, revert that change briefly to see whether it is related.
Older apps may be restricted to a fixed resolution or aspect ratio. Check the app’s own compatibility or high-DPI options and its support notes before changing system-level settings. Avoid random registry edits or unofficial “fullscreen fixer” utilities as an early step.
If this is a remote Windows session
Remote-session display behavior depends on the client and session configuration. Microsoft’s Windows App has its own display options, including settings for maximizing across current displays and multi-monitor use; its documented limitations vary by client and session type. See Microsoft’s Windows App display settings and known issues and limitations.

On a supported app, move the pointer over the green button at the top-left of the window. Click it or hold the pointer over it and choose Full Screen > Entire Screen. The shortcut Control–Command–F also works in supported apps, though app settings or keyboard remapping can affect it.
Maximizing and full screen are different on macOS. A maximized window grows while keeping the menu bar and Dock available; a true full-screen app can hide them and occupies its own Space. Apple explains the distinction in its Mac full-screen and window controls guide. Hover over the green button to see which choices that app provides; current macOS versions may offer full screen, maximize, Split View, or window tiling. Some apps do not support true full screen.
If the menu bar or Dock appears while you are in full screen, move the pointer away from the screen edge; the controls may reappear when you point there. If the green button has no full-screen option, check that you have the main app window selected rather than a dialog or a window inside a remote session.

On supported iPad models with Apple’s Windowed Apps feature, windows may be the reason an app is not filling the display. To switch to full-screen apps, open Settings > Multitasking & Gestures > Full Screen Apps. You can also use Control Center: tap or hold the Windowed Apps control and choose Full Screen Apps. The controls and supported models are listed in Apple’s iPad windowing support page; not every iPad has this feature.

If the app is still narrow or has unused space, try rotating the iPad and updating the app. It may be an iPhone-only app or may not support the iPad’s size or orientation. Apple Community guidance describes phone-style layouts on iPad as an app limitation rather than a hardware fault; see the relevant Apple Community discussion. If the developer has not built a suitable layout, changing iPad settings or reinstalling the app cannot add one. Look for an iPad version, a web version, or a developer update.
An external display, Sidecar, or remote-desktop app can introduce separate size and aspect-ratio limits. Test the app on the iPad alone to see whether the external display or the remote-session settings are involved. For Microsoft Windows App sessions, consult its display settings documentation.
Android phones and tablets
On a phone, an app may already use all the space it is allowed to use while Android keeps navigation gestures, status icons, or space around a camera cutout visible. Those system areas do not necessarily mean the app failed to fill the screen.
On some tablets and connected displays, Android supports desktop windowing. If the app has a header bar, look for a maximize button or a window-state menu and choose Full screen. On supported implementations, double-tapping the header bar may maximize the app. Android’s controls and availability vary by device and manufacturer; see Google’s desktop-windowing guide.

If the problem is a website in Chrome rather than a native app, changing the site’s layout may help. In Chrome, open More > Settings > Site settings > Desktop site and enable the option globally or for the site as needed. This asks websites to show a desktop layout; it does not force a native app into full screen. See Chrome’s Desktop site instructions.
Browser pages and video players
A browser window can be maximized while a video remains inside the page; conversely, a video can be full screen while the browser itself is not. Click or tap the page first, then use the video player’s full-screen icon. If you want the entire browser interface hidden, use the browser’s own full-screen command. On desktop browsers, F11 is common on Windows, but commands vary by browser and platform.
If the player’s button is missing or does nothing, try another browser, temporarily disable extensions or content blockers, and check whether the video is embedded in another page or app. Some websites can request browser full screen only after a user action, and browser and mobile-platform support differs. See web.dev’s Fullscreen API guide. Installing a web app from a browser’s supported install or Add to Home Screen flow may give it a more app-like launch, but that depends on the site and browser; it does not guarantee a full-screen layout.

Black bars usually mean the content and display have different aspect ratios, not that the app failed to maximize. A video may be wider than a phone screen; a game may preserve the geometry it was designed for; or an app may be fixed to a particular resolution or device layout.

- Maintain aspect ratio: keeps proportions correct but may leave borders.
- Crop: fills the screen but cuts off some content.
- Stretch: fills the screen without borders but distorts the image.
Camera cutouts, rounded corners, and other safe-area insets can also leave space around content by design. If the app provides an aspect-ratio setting, choose the option that matches your priorities rather than assuming borderless output is always better.
If full screen keeps turning off
When an app enters full screen and immediately returns to a window, something may be taking focus, changing the display, or overriding the app’s saved state. Try this order:
- Switch to borderless windowed mode if the app offers it.
- Test with one display connected and without a dock, overlay, screen recorder, or other window-management tool.
- Close notifications or dialogs that may be stealing focus, then reopen the app.
- Reset the app’s saved display preferences if it provides a safe reset option.
- Try a different resolution or refresh rate, then update the app, graphics driver, and operating system.
- Check the developer’s support page or known issues for a problem tied to your app version or display setup.
Do not begin with unofficial wrappers, registry edits, or configuration changes from unverified sources. They may create new display problems and cannot reliably add a mode the app was not designed to support.
Check that this is not screen magnification
Accessibility magnification is separate from an app’s window mode. Windows Magnifier has a full-screen view that enlarges the desktop; Ctrl+Alt+F changes Magnifier’s view, not the app’s window state. See Microsoft’s Magnifier guide. Android also has a separate full-screen magnification feature, documented in Google’s Android magnification guide.
When there may be no setting to change
If only one app stays narrow, ignores rotation, or offers no full-screen control while other apps work, the app may restrict its size, orientation, aspect ratio, or supported device category. A setting cannot always override those design choices. Contact the developer if you need a fix, and include the device model, operating-system and app versions, a screenshot, whether other apps fill the display, what happens after rotation, whether an external display is connected, and the exact control or shortcut you tried.
Quick check: Is the window maximized? Does the app have its own full-screen control? Is the issue limited to one app? Is the device in a windowed mode? Are the bars preserving the content’s proportions? Does the behavior change without an external display or overlay? Those answers usually show whether to adjust a setting or ask the app’s developer.
