A wkhtmltopdf segmentation fault has no single universal cause or fix. The useful first step is to identify the exact version, operating system, package build, command, and input that fail; then check runtime compatibility and reduce the document to a reproducible case. A warning printed before the crash may be relevant, but it is not proof of the cause.
What a wkhtmltopdf segfault does—and does not—tell you
A segmentation fault means the process accessed memory incorrectly and terminated. It tells you that the program crashed, not which document feature, library, or system condition triggered the crash. The same caution applies to wkhtmltoimage, which uses the related rendering stack but is a separate command-line tool.
Keep the actual result distinct from the label. An assertion failure or an abort during PDF printing is not necessarily a segmentation fault. Save standard error, the exit status, and—if your operating system reports one—the terminating signal. That evidence helps distinguish a rendering crash from a failed assertion, a timeout, or an ordinary conversion error.

Why the build and host operating system matter
wkhtmltopdf’s downloads guidance explains that “static” packaging does not mean the program is independent of every host library. Packages can still rely on system-provided components, and library versions and libc can differ between distributions. A package made for a different operating system release or architecture may therefore behave differently from a compatible build. Check the project’s downloads and FAQ page against the actual host instead of assuming that a binary will work because it starts on another machine.
The project identifies 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, as the stable series on the reviewed downloads page and recommends the latest stable release. This is a release statement on that page, not evidence that a newer release appeared in 2026. The project status page also says Qt 4 has not been supported since 2015 and its WebKit has not been updated since 2012. That aging rendering stack is a reason to assess compatibility and workload fit, but it does not diagnose any particular crash.
- Record the distribution and release, CPU architecture, package source, and whether the build reports patched Qt.
- Check that the package is intended for that system and inspect its runtime dependencies rather than swapping libraries at random.
- Do not treat a “static” label as proof that libc and other host requirements no longer matter.

1. Capture the exact environment and failure
Run wkhtmltopdf --version and save the complete output. Record the operating-system version, architecture, how the package was installed, the entire conversion command, and all standard error output. If the failure is in wkhtmltoimage, capture that tool’s version and command instead. Preserve the input files and note whether the same command succeeds on another host; a difference is a clue to investigate, not proof that the document is at fault.
The project’s issue-reporting guidance requests version and operating-system details along with a detailed description and reproducible test case.

2. Check package and runtime compatibility
Compare the installed package with the operating-system and architecture guidance on the downloads page. Review required runtime libraries and libc compatibility for the distribution where the crash occurs. If the package is mismatched, test a package intended for the actual host in a controlled environment. Avoid copying a library from another machine or changing system libraries without first identifying a specific dependency mismatch; that can introduce new failures without addressing the original one.
3. Reduce the input to a minimal reproducer
Work from a copy of the failing document. Remove unrelated content in stages—scripts, stylesheets, images, fonts, external resources, and conversion options—while keeping a record of each change. Find the smallest version that still fails and the smallest change that makes it succeed. Save both variants and all locally referenced assets. This is a diagnostic method, not a guaranteed fix; a reproducer gives you evidence to test and something useful to report.
For web pages, test whether the failure requires network access or a particular resource. If you can reproduce it with a local HTML file and local assets, that can help separate document behavior from network, certificate, or remote-service conditions. Do not assume that a remote resource caused the crash merely because it appears in the log.
4. Treat warnings as leads, not verdicts
Note which warnings appear and in what order, then change one suspected resource or condition at a time and repeat the conversion. An archived 2018 wkhtmltoimage issue reports font-size warnings and an SSL warning before a segfault in one conversion with version 0.12.5 and patched Qt. The report does not establish that those warnings caused the crash or that the same trigger applies to another installation.
5. Test a compatible build or a different renderer
If your package does not match the host, compare behavior with a package intended for that distribution and architecture. If you are considering a different renderer, test representative documents for layout, pagination, fonts, images, JavaScript behavior, and deployment requirements. A changed renderer can remove one compatibility problem while creating differences in output; do not assume it is a drop-in fix.

6. Report the smallest reproducible failure
When you cannot isolate or resolve the crash, report the exact version, OS and release, command, full error output, and minimal reproducer as requested on the project’s support page. Include what you removed or changed during reduction and whether the failure changes across builds or hosts. Avoid describing an assertion abort as a segfault unless the observed termination supports that diagnosis.

The assertion example comes from archived issue #1806, dated June 24, 2014. It is evidence of one historical assertion failure, not a diagnosis for current crashes.
Alternatives when wkhtmltopdf is the wrong fit
The project status page suggests considering WeasyPrint or Prince for reports generated from controlled HTML, and Puppeteer for pages that depend on dynamic JavaScript. These are options to evaluate, not guaranteed replacements. Compare the actual needs of your output: JavaScript execution, CSS and pagination fidelity, font and image handling, supported deployment platforms, security isolation, operational support, and the effort required to migrate.

A segfault investigation should not obscure the risk of rendering hostile input. The project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” The project recommends considering AppArmor or SELinux as part of protecting the environment. Sanitizing input and isolating the process are security measures; they do not establish or fix the cause of a crash.
For HTML that comes from users or other untrusted sources, limit what the renderer can access and execute, and keep it away from sensitive files and credentials. Apply the security controls appropriate to your deployment rather than treating a successful conversion as proof that the input is safe.
