If Windows move to another monitor, shrink, or lose their maximized state after sleep, the usual cause is a temporary change in the display setup—not Windows randomly forgetting every window. When a monitor or dock briefly disappears and reconnects, Windows recalculates the desktop; applications may then be moved or resized to fit the display configuration it sees.
Start by checking Windows 11’s multiple-display settings and each monitor’s resolution. If the problem persists, test whether it happens when only the monitor sleeps, isolate the dock and cable, and then choose a layout tool if you need automatic recovery.
Why do windows move or resize after sleep?
Windows places application windows within a desktop made up of the displays it currently detects. If a monitor powers down or enters a low-power state and is briefly treated as disconnected, the available desktop changes. When the display returns, Windows and applications respond to the new monitor arrangement, resolution, scaling, and usable work area. Some windows may move to another display, shrink to fit, or return without their previous maximized state.

DisplayFusion’s documentation describes sleep and resume as events that can trigger full display re-detection and window repositioning, including with some DisplayPort monitor configurations. That is not true of every monitor or connection: the result depends on the display, cable, dock, graphics hardware, driver, and power settings. The cause can sit at several layers: Windows’ display restoration, monitor firmware or power saving, a dock or adapter, a graphics driver, or an application that handles display and DPI changes poorly. If every application moves, suspect a change in the display setup first. If only one does, investigate that application’s saved window state and update history as well.
Try these Windows 11 checks first
- Open Settings > System > Display. Use the display diagram to confirm that the monitors are arranged to match their physical positions. Select Identify if you need to match a number on screen to a monitor.
- Expand Multiple displays. Turn on Remember window locations based on monitor connection.
- Decide whether Windows should minimize windows on displays that disconnect. Turn on Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected if that is preferable to having windows silently moved. Microsoft documents both controls for Windows 11 multi-monitor setups: Docking and multiple monitors in Windows 11.
- Select each monitor in the display diagram. Under Scale & layout, check that scale, resolution, and orientation are intentional. Prefer the option marked Recommended when it matches your needs; use the display’s recommended or native resolution where available.
- Test the settings through several sleep and wake cycles, including the connection state that normally causes trouble, such as docking or undocking.
The remembered-location control can help Windows restore windows for a particular monitor connection state, but it does not prevent a monitor from disconnecting or repair a faulty handshake. Its behavior can also interact with other work-area changes; DisplayFusion’s FAQ discusses that trade-off. Testing both states over several cycles is more useful than assuming either setting is always correct. DisplayFusion FAQ.
Find out what is changing
Use the symptom to narrow the cause before changing drivers or buying a utility. Check Settings > System > Display as soon as the problem occurs: does the monitor still appear, and are its arrangement and resolution what you expect?

- Windows move to another monitor: The original display may have temporarily disappeared from the desktop layout.
- Windows become smaller: They may have been resized to fit a lower-resolution display or a smaller usable work area. A change in scaling can also make the same window size look different.
- Maximized windows return as ordinary windows: The shell or the application may have restored window geometry after the display configuration changed.
- The display returns at the wrong resolution: Check the display connection, graphics driver, dock or adapter, and monitor identification. Microsoft notes that unexpected resolution changes can indicate a graphics-driver issue and advises checking for updates. Change your screen resolution and layout in Windows.
- Windows appear to be on a display that is not visible: Check Windows’ display diagram for a stale or unexpected monitor configuration before treating this as an application problem.
- Only one application moves or resizes: Check that application’s saved window state, recent updates, and DPI behavior. Applications differ in how they respond to display and scaling changes.
- The issue happens when the monitor turns off, but not after PC sleep: The monitor’s standby or reconnection behavior is a stronger suspect than system sleep itself.
Compare distinct conditions rather than treating them as one: let the screen turn off while the PC stays awake, lock the PC, enter full sleep, power off the monitor manually, and—if relevant—undock and redock the laptop. Note which condition reproduces the problem.
Check resolution, scaling, and the display connection
For each display, open Settings > System > Display, select the monitor, and check Scale & layout. Confirm its scale, resolution, and orientation, then repeat for the other screens. Non-native resolutions can make content look small, stretched, centered, or bordered; different scale settings can also make a restored window appear to have changed size. Mismatched scaling does not by itself prove why a window moved, but it can expose DPI-handling problems in applications.

- Graphics driver: Install the current driver offered for your exact GPU or computer model, then restart and check the reported resolution and refresh rate after wake. If the trouble started immediately after a driver update, consider testing a supported rollback instead. An update is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Dock or hub: Connect the monitor directly to the computer if possible, try another dock output, and check for dock firmware or relevant graphics/USB display-driver updates. If direct connection works reliably but the dock does not, the dock or its display-handshake path is implicated. USB-C and Thunderbolt docks add another layer of display negotiation.
- Cable and adapters: Test a known-good cable suited to the display’s resolution and refresh rate. Remove unnecessary adapters, KVM switches, or USB display adapters during diagnosis. If both are available, compare DisplayPort and HDMI. A successful cable swap narrows the cause; it does not establish that every similar problem is a cable fault.
- Monitor power options: Look for settings named deep sleep, eco mode, or similar power-saving behavior. Test changing them, or temporarily leave the monitor powered while Windows locks. Monitor input switching, slow wake, high refresh rates, HDR, and adaptive sync can complicate the reconnection behavior.
- One monitor at a time: Test each display and output separately. This can reveal whether a particular monitor, port, or adapter triggers the topology change.
For a quick display-mode check, press Windows + P and confirm that the intended mode—such as Extend—is selected. The available modes are PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only; Microsoft documents the shortcut on its Windows 11 multiple-monitor page.
Use monitor power settings as a diagnostic workaround
If windows stay put when the monitor remains active, but move after it enters standby, try temporarily increasing the monitor-off timeout or disabling its deep-sleep mode. You can also let Windows lock while leaving the display connection active. If the issue stops, the monitor’s power transition is likely part of the trigger.
This is a workaround rather than a repair: keeping a display awake uses more power and may not suit a laptop, an OLED panel, or an energy-conscious setup. A screen-off event and full PC sleep are separate conditions, so test the one that actually causes the problem.

Use FancyZones for repeatable layouts
Microsoft PowerToys’ FancyZones is a free, open-source option for organizing windows into repeatable zones. It is useful when the goal is to restore a known layout, not necessarily each window’s exact former coordinates. FancyZones can keep windows in zones when resolution changes, and offers settings such as Keep windows in their zones when the screen resolution changes, During zone layout changes, windows assigned to a zone will match new size/position, and Move newly created windows to the last known zone.
Press Windows + Shift + ` to open the FancyZones editor by default. You can also move or snap windows with Windows + arrow keys when the relevant overrides are enabled, or apply an assigned custom layout with Windows + Ctrl + Alt + number. These are zone-based behaviors, not a promise that every application will return to arbitrary coordinates after sleep. Some elevated applications may require running PowerToys with administrator privileges; see Microsoft’s administrator-mode guidance.

PowerToys Workspaces can launch or reposition a group of applications for a recurring context, such as coding or writing. It is not an automatic sleep/resume repair: applications launch first and may visibly move into position afterward, and Workspaces does not reproduce every Windows snapped state.

When a dedicated window-restoration utility makes sense
DisplayFusion is worth considering if monitors genuinely disconnect during sleep or docking, Windows’ built-in controls are insufficient, and you need automatic restoration of window positions rather than zone-based placement. Its documentation describes using triggers to save positions before sleep or idle and restore them after resume; it also documents saving and restoring positions around docking and undocking. It is a third-party background utility, so it may not suit a locked-down corporate computer or anyone who wants a free, Microsoft-only setup. If the underlying problem is an unstable dock, cable, monitor, or driver, position restoration can mask the disruption without fixing its source. Current pricing is not established here, so check the vendor’s purchase page before deciding.
What not to do first
- Do not assume disabling remembered window locations is a universal fix. It changes how Windows restores windows and can make docking or disconnect behavior worse for some setups.
- Do not start by deleting display-related registry data. Rebuilding cached display configuration is sometimes suggested as an advanced troubleshooting step, but it can erase remembered monitor arrangements and is not an established general remedy for recurring disconnects. If you consider it, first make a registry backup or restore point and use a current, authoritative procedure; do not delete keys casually.
- Do not blame one application if all windows move. When every application is affected, check display enumeration and the connection path first. Reserve application-specific fixes for cases where the behavior is limited to one program.
Windows 10 note
These instructions focus on Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; its display-settings page remains useful for identifying the relevant concepts, but Windows 10 should be treated as a legacy system. Microsoft’s display resolution and layout guidance.
