Website screenshots look wrong after resizing because several different “pixel” systems are being mixed: CSS pixels used by the browser layout, physical device pixels, and pixels in the exported image. Browser zoom, device-pixel ratio (DPR), viewport settings, and image aspect-ratio rules can all change how those units map to one another. A reliable fix is to identify which measurement is wrong before changing the image dimensions.
Start with the symptom, not the resize handle
First decide whether the problem is blur, unexpected dimensions, stretching, or a mobile layout that uses the wrong width. Each symptom has a different cause.
| What you see | Most likely mechanism | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Text and edges look soft | A bitmap was enlarged, or the capture used a different pixel scale than expected | Browser zoom, window.devicePixelRatio, and capture scale |
| Screenshot is about twice as wide or tall as expected | Device-pixel output instead of CSS-pixel output, often on a high-DPI display | Whether the tool captured CSS or device pixels |
| Photos or cards look fat or thin | Rendered width-to-height ratio differs from the source ratio | CSS width, height, and aspect-ratio |
| Mobile page appears roughly 400 CSS pixels wide on a 720-pixel device | Viewport scaling and the viewport meta setting, not a simple hardware-width limit | <meta name="viewport" ...> and browser viewport scale |
CSS pixels, physical pixels, and screenshot pixels
A browser lays out a page in CSS pixels. Your display has physical pixels. The exported PNG, JPEG, or WebP has its own pixel dimensions. Those numbers are related, but they are not interchangeable.
Recommended Free Tools
MDN defines window.devicePixelRatio as the ratio of physical pixels to CSS pixels for the current display. A DPR of 2 means a one-CSS-pixel line may be represented by two physical pixels in each direction. Page zoom can change this value; pinch zoom does not change it in the same way. Therefore, a screenshot taken at one zoom level can have different output dimensions from a screenshot of the same page taken at another zoom level.

Run this in DevTools Console on the page you are capturing:
console.log({
dpr: window.devicePixelRatio,
innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
innerHeight: window.innerHeight,
screenWidth: window.screen.width,
screenHeight: window.screen.height
});
innerWidth and innerHeight describe the browser’s CSS viewport. They are the useful values for reproducing a layout. screen.width is a screen measurement in CSS pixels in modern browsers, not a promise that the panel’s physical pixel count is the same number.
Why high-DPI captures seem “too large”
Capture libraries may output one image pixel for each CSS pixel or one image pixel for each device pixel. Playwright documents this distinction: scale: "css" produces one screenshot pixel per CSS pixel. Device-scale output multiplies the bitmap on high-DPI displays. A 1,200-CSS-pixel-wide viewport at DPR 2 can therefore produce an image about 2,400 pixels wide without the page itself becoming wider.

Decide what the image will be used for before capturing it.
- Web documentation or a design review: CSS-pixel output generally keeps dimensions aligned with the layout.
- Pixel-level testing or a retina asset: device-pixel output preserves more physical detail but creates a larger file.
- Print or PDF: define paper size, margins, and orientation instead of treating screen pixels as a print specification.
In Playwright, make the choice explicit:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page-css.png',
fullPage: true,
scale: 'css'
});
If your workflow requires device pixels, configure the browser context’s device scale factor and expect the resulting bitmap dimensions to increase. Do not “correct” a device-pixel capture by blindly shrinking it and then compare it with a CSS-pixel capture; you are comparing different coordinate systems.
Resizing cannot restore detail
Resampling a raster image changes its dimensions, not the information captured originally. Enlarging a 900-pixel-wide screenshot to 1,800 pixels interpolates new values between existing pixels; it does not recreate small text or edge detail. Shrinking can hide detail and introduce a softer appearance when the result is displayed at a non-integer scale.

For a sharp result, capture near the final display size. If you need several sizes, generate them from the original capture rather than repeatedly resizing an already-resized copy. Keep the original lossless PNG when text or UI edges matter, and use JPEG only when its compression artifacts are acceptable.
Fix stretched or squashed content with aspect-ratio checks
Stretching is a geometry problem, not a DPR problem. Compare the source image’s natural ratio with the ratio imposed by the page.
- Right-click the image and choose Inspect.
- In the Computed panel, note the rendered width and height.
- Check the element’s CSS rules for fixed
widthandheight, anaspect-ratiodeclaration, andobject-fit. - Compare the rendered ratio (
rendered width ÷ rendered height) with the image’s intrinsic ratio shown in the element inspector or image properties.
Chrome’s Lighthouse guidance describes incorrect aspect ratio as a case where the rendered ratio differs significantly from the natural ratio. Where possible, declare the image’s intrinsic width and height so the browser can reserve the right space, then use a deliberate rule such as object-fit: cover when cropping is intended. Avoid setting unrelated fixed width and height values that force distortion.
img.card-image {
width: 100%;
height: auto;
aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;
object-fit: cover; /* crops instead of stretching */
}
If the screenshot itself is being stretched in an editor, lock the editor’s aspect-ratio constraint and enter only one target dimension. A screenshot with a 16:9 source ratio must remain 16:9 unless you intentionally crop it.
Why a 720-pixel phone can show a roughly 400-pixel layout
Hardware width is not the same as CSS viewport width. Mobile browsers apply a layout viewport and a scale factor so desktop-oriented pages remain usable. The viewport meta element controls the relationship between device width and the layout viewport.

With width=device-width, the layout viewport is based on the device’s CSS width rather than an old desktop-style default. The final value still depends on browser scaling, orientation, zoom, and accessibility settings. A phone described as 720 physical pixels wide can therefore report a much smaller CSS viewport to the page. That is expected unit conversion, not evidence that the display has lost pixels.

When reproducing a mobile screenshot, record the CSS viewport width and height, device scale factor, orientation, and zoom. Setting only a physical resolution in an emulator or capture tool is insufficient.
Soft images on dense displays: check the source selection
An image can be correctly sized in the screenshot and still look soft because the page supplied an undersized source. Responsive-image techniques let the browser choose among multiple files based on rendered dimensions and device-pixel ratio.
<img
src="hero-800.jpg"
srcset="hero-800.jpg 800w, hero-1600.jpg 1600w"
sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px"
width="700"
height="394"
alt="...">
The browser uses the rendered size, the sizes condition, and DPR when selecting a candidate. Inspect the image’s Network request and its Current source in DevTools to verify that a suitable variant was downloaded. Supplying a 1× file to a 2× display can make edges appear soft even when no screenshot resize occurred.
A repeatable browser troubleshooting workflow
- Record the coordinate system. Write down CSS viewport dimensions, DPR, browser zoom, orientation, and whether the capture is full-page.
- Measure the exported file. Read its pixel width and height and compare them with the expected CSS dimensions multiplied by the intended scale.
- Check geometry. Compare the screenshot’s ratio and every visibly distorted image’s natural ratio with its rendered ratio.
- Inspect mobile metadata. Confirm the viewport meta tag and test at the target viewport rather than relying on the device’s physical resolution.
- Inspect image candidates. Confirm that responsive images provide a source large enough for the rendered size and DPR.
- Capture again from the original page. Do not use a previously resized bitmap as the new source.
Common failure modes and fixes
The screenshot is exactly twice as wide
Cause: device-pixel capture at DPR 2. Fix: select CSS-pixel output (for example, Playwright’s scale: "css") or set the desired device scale deliberately.
Text is blurry after export
Cause: enlargement, fractional display scaling, compression, or an undersized source image. Fix: capture at the final CSS/device scale, preserve PNG for UI, and verify responsive image candidates.
Only one card image is distorted
Cause: that element has conflicting width and height rules. Fix: inspect computed styles, restore its natural ratio, or use intentional cropping with object-fit.

Higher device scale multiplies pixel count and usually increases memory, encoding time, and file size. Full-page captures can be much taller than the viewport, so set a sensible maximum or capture sections when a single very tall bitmap is unnecessary. Wait for a stable state—specific selectors, a known delay, or network idle—rather than assuming the first paint is complete. For repeatable comparisons, fix the browser version, viewport, zoom, fonts, color scheme, and device scale.
Cache captured pages when the content is immutable, but invalidate the cache when CSS, images, or data change. Treat bot checks, consent dialogs, and chat widgets as page-state variables: they can alter dimensions and obscure the comparison.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF while applying the capture settings you would otherwise configure in a browser. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing CSS width change the screenshot’s physical pixel count?
It changes the layout in CSS pixels. The exported pixel dimensions still depend on the capture scale and device-pixel ratio.
Should I use PNG or JPEG for resized screenshots?
Use PNG when crisp text and interface edges matter; use JPEG when smaller files are more important and compression artifacts are acceptable.
Why does pinch-zoom not explain a changed devicePixelRatio?
Page zoom can change devicePixelRatio, while pinch zoom changes the visual scale without changing that value in the same way.
The Bottom Line
Correct screenshot resizing by keeping CSS pixels, device pixels, and exported pixels distinct; capture at the intended scale, preserve aspect ratios, configure the mobile viewport, and provide image sources large enough for the target DPR.
