A WebDriver screenshot is captured from the browser’s visual viewport, not reconstructed from the page’s DOM. If a headed browser loses access to the interactive display context after a Windows lock, RDP disconnect, user switch, or service-session change, it may return a blank, black, stale, or otherwise unexpected image. The most reliable design for unattended captures is to run Chrome headlessly, set the viewport explicitly, and start a fresh automated browser session.

Why locking or disconnecting the machine can break a screenshot

The W3C WebDriver specification defines the Take Screenshot command as a capture of the top-level browsing context’s visual viewport. An element screenshot is also a visual capture: WebDriver scrolls the element into view and draws it from the framebuffer. The browser therefore needs a usable rendered image at capture time; having the page’s HTML in memory is not enough to guarantee a screenshot.

A headed browser runs with a visible user interface tied to a display and session. Locking a workstation, disconnecting Remote Desktop, switching users, or moving a browser into a service account’s session can change the display context available to that process. In some configurations, the browser can keep running while the framebuffer or compositor path used for capture is no longer the one the automation expected. That can produce an empty, black, frozen, or old-looking image even though the page’s DOM still exists.

This is not one universal Windows defect, and the same trigger does not produce the same result everywhere. Operating system, browser, graphics path, and whether the process is in a local, remote, or service session all matter. The right diagnosis is to test the actual session transitions on the machine where the worker runs, rather than assume that a lock screen always causes a particular screenshot failure.

Why checking the DOM is not enough

DOM checks can show that navigation succeeded or that an element exists, but they do not prove that the browser produced the expected pixels. A screenshot depends on the rendered visual viewport or framebuffer. Treat page readiness and screenshot validity as separate checks in a capture pipeline.

Why the failure may appear only after RDP disconnect

An RDP session is not simply a window left open on the same local desktop. Remote and local console sessions can have different display arrangements. Google Cloud’s VM screenshot documentation, for example, distinguishes display-adapter and local-console considerations from remote-desktop session choices and warns that capturing the local console has privacy implications. That is a useful reminder to check the session model of your own VM provider and operating system; it is not proof that every RDP disconnect changes every machine’s framebuffer in the same way.

Choose a capture architecture that matches the job

Approach Display dependency Best fit Trade-off to check
Headless Chrome Does not require a visible UI; Chrome runs in an unattended environment. Scheduled jobs, CI, and server-side screenshot workers. Validate viewport and rendering behavior against your target pages and browser version.
Headed Chrome in a persistent desktop session Depends on the display/session context remaining usable. Tasks that truly need a visible browser or headed-only behavior. Lock, disconnect, user-switch, and service-account behavior must be tested on the target OS.
Hosted desktop-browser testing Managed by the service rather than your worker’s local desktop. Teams that prefer managed browser infrastructure to maintaining their own desktop worker. Service capabilities and constraints vary. AWS Device Farm documents desktop browser testing with browser-specific WebDriver capabilities, but does not support multi-window or multi-session interaction.

Headless is the first option to try for a screenshot worker that should run while nobody is logged in. Chrome for Developers says Headless mode runs without a visible UI; since Chrome 112, it creates platform windows without displaying them. That makes it a supported unattended architecture, rather than a workaround that depends on keeping an RDP desktop open. It does not mean every page or workflow behaves identically to a headed session, so check any page that relies on multiple windows, visible prompts, downloads, or other browser behavior important to your job.

Run Chrome headlessly for unattended captures

For a direct one-page capture, Chrome documents a command-line path using --headless, --screenshot, and optionally --window-size. Replace the URL with the page you need to capture. The command writes screenshot.png in the current directory:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,900 https://example.com

Use the Chrome executable name and path available on your operating system. If the executable is not on your PATH, invoke it by its full path. Chrome also documents --headless=new; use the spelling supported by the Chrome version installed on the worker. The screenshot command is useful for isolating whether the page can be captured without the headed desktop involved. If it succeeds while a headed WebDriver run fails after lock or disconnect, that points toward the session/display path rather than a missing DOM element.

For a Python Selenium worker using ChromeDriver, the same headless mode can be selected when creating a fresh driver. The following example captures one URL and writes a PNG. It assumes Python, Selenium, Chrome, and a compatible ChromeDriver setup are already installed:

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options

options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless=new")
options.add_argument("--window-size=1440,900")

driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png")
finally:
    driver.quit()

The viewport argument makes the requested browser window size explicit. It improves reproducibility when a session is healthy; it does not create a missing display session or repair a broken framebuffer. If your installed Chrome requires the other documented spelling, replace --headless=new with --headless.

Keep the capture environment reproducible

  • Set a deliberate viewport instead of relying on whatever size a desktop happened to have when the worker started.
  • Run the same capture under the same operating-system account and session type used by the scheduled job. A test launched interactively as an administrator may not represent a service-account run.
  • When diagnosing a failure, record the browser mode, browser version, viewport, operating-system account, and whether the machine was locked or disconnected. This makes comparisons between successful and failing runs meaningful.
  • Check the saved image itself as well as navigation and DOM checks. A successful page load is not a visual-capture assertion.

Set the viewport, but do not mistake it for a display fix

ChromeDriver supports the window-size and start-maximized capabilities. An explicit size is generally easier to reproduce than maximizing a window, because “maximized” depends on the display available to that session. Neither capability supplies a desktop framebuffer if the headed browser has lost its usable display context.

Use the same viewport for comparable captures and verify the resulting image dimensions. If an image is consistently the wrong size, investigate window and viewport configuration. If it becomes black or stale only after lock or disconnect, changing dimensions alone is unlikely to address the underlying session transition.

Start a fresh ChromeDriver session instead of attaching to an old browser

ChromeDriver documents a limitation when it attaches to an existing Chrome process through debuggerAddress: because the automation extension is loaded only at startup, some commands may be unsupported in an already-running session. Its documented remedy is to launch a new Chrome session.

For screenshot jobs, prefer that fresh-session model unless you have a specific reason to attach to an existing browser. It reduces ambiguity about which process was started for automation and whether its startup support was loaded. It does not by itself solve every display/session problem in headed mode; combine a fresh session with headless execution for unattended work where a visible UI is not required.

If headed mode is mandatory, test the session transitions directly

Some workflows need a visible browser or behavior that you have not validated headlessly. In that case, avoid designing the worker around an assumption that a user’s RDP desktop will stay attached indefinitely. Run a small repeatable test on the target OS and account, capturing before and after each transition:

  1. Start a fresh headed ChromeDriver session and capture a known page while the desktop is active.
  2. Lock the machine, wait for the same interval your production job would wait, then request another capture.
  3. Unlock and capture again. This separates a temporary lock-state change from a persistent worker failure.
  4. Repeat with an RDP disconnect and reconnect. Do not treat disconnect as equivalent to signing out unless that is how your actual deployment behaves.
  5. Test a user switch and a service-account launch separately. Record the exact account and session type for each result.

If only the headed session fails during a particular transition but a headless run captures the same URL, move unattended jobs to headless mode where possible. If the application genuinely requires headed operation, keep the worker in a tested, persistent session and make that dependency explicit in deployment and recovery procedures. There is no evidence-based universal setting that guarantees a headed browser will retain a usable framebuffer through every lock or remote-session change.

When hosted browser infrastructure makes sense

A hosted desktop-browser testing service can remove the need to maintain the worker’s local display session, but it is a change in execution environment, not a universal compatibility fix. Compare options against the behavior your job needs: headed versus headless rendering, reliance on an interactive desktop, multiple windows or sessions, viewport control, graphics determinism, isolation, startup repeatability, and the maintenance you are willing to own.

AWS Device Farm documents desktop browser testing with browser-specific WebDriver capabilities. Its documentation also says multi-window or multi-session interaction is unsupported, which matters if the tested flow opens additional windows or depends on concurrent browser sessions. Confirm the constraints of any service against your workflow before moving a capture job.

Troubleshoot blank, black, stale, or missing screenshots

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next step
Blank or black capture only after lock or RDP disconnect Headed browser’s display/session context. Compare with a headless capture and test lock and disconnect separately on the target OS.
Image is the wrong size Window or viewport configuration. Set an explicit ChromeDriver window size or Chrome command-line --window-size, then inspect the saved image dimensions.
Some commands fail when using an existing Chrome process Remote-debugging attachment and startup state. Start a new Chrome session through ChromeDriver rather than attaching with debuggerAddress.
Interactive run works, scheduled run fails Different account, service session, or display path. Run the diagnostic under the scheduled job’s actual account and test its session transitions.
Headless capture differs from the headed result Rendering or workflow differences relevant to the page. Compare the specific behavior your task requires before switching the production job.

Use a short isolation sequence

  1. Capture a known public page with Chrome’s headless screenshot command and an explicit size.
  2. Capture the same page with a fresh headed ChromeDriver session while the desktop is active.
  3. Repeat the headed capture after one transition at a time: lock, RDP disconnect, user switch, then service-account execution.
  4. Compare image content and dimensions, not just command exit status or DOM state.
  5. Keep the successful headless path for unattended work, or document the persistent-session requirement if headed mode is essential.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need an image of a public web page rather than a locally controlled WebDriver session, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a repair for a local browser’s framebuffer or a drop-in replacement when your test must interact with your own WebDriver process. For a URL-based capture, one GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The response includes page-verdict and billing headers; cache hits and bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are not billed. Cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and each cleanup step can be turned off.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options:

Cost, reliability, and operational trade-offs

For an in-house worker, the main cost is operational: keeping Chrome and ChromeDriver usable, making the execution account and display/session arrangement predictable, and investigating failures that appear only after a particular transition. Headless execution removes dependence on a visible UI for an unattended job, while explicit viewport settings make image size more repeatable. Neither step guarantees identical rendering across every page and environment, so retain checks that detect an empty or unexpected image.

Managed browser services trade local desktop maintenance for service-specific capabilities and constraints. A URL screenshot API can be simpler when the job is to capture a public page, but it does not provide a local WebDriver session for tests that must exercise browser interactions. Choose by task: browser automation requiring a controlled session belongs in WebDriver or a compatible managed test environment; straightforward URL-to-image capture can use a screenshot API.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Windows lock always make Selenium screenshots blank?

No. The outcome depends on the operating system, browser, graphics path, and session arrangement. Test the exact lock and session transitions used by your worker.

Will an HDMI dummy plug fix a black WebDriver screenshot?

The cited documentation does not establish a dummy plug as a reliable fix for this framebuffer/session problem. Diagnose the browser mode and session first.

Can I use a screenshot API for an internal page behind my login?

The available ScreenshotNeo facts describe URL-based capture and custom authentication options, but do not establish that a particular private network or login flow is reachable. Confirm access requirements in its documentation before relying on it.
