Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food was removed from Netflix in January 2024 after complaints about scenes involving religion, food and an allegation of “love jihad.” Netflix said the title was taken down at the licensor’s request; co-producer Zee Studios apologised to the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and said edits would be made. The reporting available does not establish that a court ordered the film banned.
What is Annapoorani about?
The Nayanthara-led Tamil film follows Annapoorani, a young woman from a conservative Brahmin family who hopes to become a top chef. Her ambition brings her into conflict with family expectations and restrictions around professional cooking and meat. It opened in theatres on December 1, 2023, and began streaming on Netflix on December 29.

Why did the film face backlash?
After its Netflix release, Hindu groups and other critics objected to scenes and dialogue they said hurt religious sentiments. Coverage of the complaints identifies several points of dispute:
- A Muslim character reportedly tells Annapoorani that Lord Ram ate meat during his exile. Critics objected to the dialogue and its implication.
- Annapoorani, whose family background is associated with Brahmin and temple-cooking traditions, cooks and eats meat as she pursues her culinary ambitions.
- In a cooking-competition sequence, she is shown wearing a hijab and offering namaz before preparing biryani.
- Some complainants also alleged that the film promoted “love jihad.” That is an allegation made by critics, not an established description or legal finding about the film.
These were objections raised by complainants and critics; the fact that they objected does not establish that the film violated the law or that their interpretation was a judicial finding.

Complaints, an FIR and Netflix’s removal
The controversy escalated in early January 2024. Ramesh Solanki, founder of the Hindu IT Cell, publicly circulated a complaint on January 6. Separately, an FIR was reported in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on a complaint by the Hindu Sewa Parishad. News reports said it named Nayanthara, actor Jai, writer-director Nilesh Krishnaa, producers and personnel associated with Zee Studios and Netflix India, including Netflix India head Monika Shergill.
Reporting described the Jabalpur case as invoking Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code and another provision. The precise second provision should not be stated as settled here without checking the FIR or a court record. An FIR records allegations and begins a police process; it is not a conviction or a finding that the named people committed an offence. The Jabalpur FIR and the Mumbai complaint associated with Solanki were separate developments, not one case.
Netflix reportedly said it removed the film at the licensor’s request. That wording matters: it describes a withdrawal requested by the rights holder, not a court order or an announcement that Netflix had found the film unlawful.
What did Zee Studios apologise for?
In a letter to the VHP dated January 9, reported publicly on January 11, Zee Studios apologised for hurt caused to Hindu and Brahmin communities and said it had no intention of hurting their religious sentiments. The co-producer said the film would remain off Netflix until objectionable portions were edited, after which an edited version could be released. The apology was a company response to the controversy, not a judicial admission of criminal wrongdoing. Cinema Express reported the apology and proposed edits.
Nayanthara’s separate apology
On January 18, Nayanthara issued her own apology. She said she and the team had not intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments and described the film as a sincere effort to promote empowerment and positive values. She also said she had not expected a film that had passed theatrical certification to be removed from an OTT service. Her statement was separate from Zee Studios’ earlier letter. The Indian Express reported her response.

Was Annapoorani banned, and can you watch it now?
The evidence reported here supports saying that the film was removed from Netflix at the licensor’s request and that Zee Studios proposed edits before a possible re-release. It does not establish a court-ordered ban. Nor does the reporting confirm that the edited version was later released or restored to Netflix. Streaming catalogues vary by country and change over time, so check the relevant platform’s current listing for your location rather than relying on the 2024 reports for present availability.
The distinction is important: a police complaint or FIR is not a ban, and a rights-holder-requested platform withdrawal is not the same thing as a government prohibition. In this case, the confirmed account is a platform removal amid complaints, a proposed edit, and no established court order banning the film.
