There was only one Premier League fixture on Boxing Day 2025: Manchester United v Newcastle United, which kicked off at 8pm GMT on Friday, 26 December and was shown live on Sky Sports.
This was primarily a fixture-calendar and player-rest issue—not simply a decision by Sky Sports or TNT Sports to show fewer matches. The Premier League had fewer available weekends after changes to European and domestic competitions, while the EFL operated under separate scheduling and broadcasting arrangements.
What happened on Boxing Day 2025?
The Premier League did not stage a normal full round of fixtures on Friday, 26 December 2025. Manchester United v Newcastle United was the only Premier League match played that day, with an 8pm GMT kick-off and live UK coverage on Sky Sports.

The published fixture changes show how widely the festive schedule was arranged.
Why was the Premier League schedule so sparse?
The Premier League said the main problem was pressure on the overall football calendar. European club competitions had expanded, while changes to domestic competitions—including the FA Cup—also affected when matches could be played.
The 2025/26 Premier League still had to accommodate all 380 fixtures, but the League described it as a 33-weekend competition. Fewer usable weekends meant more pressure on midweek and festive dates.

- Expanded European competition commitments used more midweek dates.
- Domestic-calendar changes reduced flexibility for rearranged matches.
- The Premier League had fewer weekends in which to fit 380 games.
- Festive fixtures had to be spread out rather than concentrated on Boxing Day.
That does not mean UEFA directly banned a full Boxing Day programme. The more accurate explanation is that the expanded European calendar reduced flexibility in the domestic fixture list.
Why did player recovery matter?
The Premier League said it arranged the festive programme so that no club would play within 60 hours of another match. That restriction made a conventional Boxing Day round followed soon afterwards by another full round difficult to accommodate.
Longer gaps help with player recovery, competitive fairness and the practical demands of travel and matchday operations. The trade-off is that supporters lose the traditional concentration of Premier League football on 26 December.
The League’s explanation of the 2025/26 festive schedule therefore points to fixture congestion and recovery time, rather than a broadcaster independently removing Boxing Day football.

Television selections did affect the exact dates and kick-off times. Matches can be moved for UK television coverage or because of domestic and European competition commitments, as the Premier League explains in its broadcast FAQ.
However, that is different from saying that Sky Sports or TNT Sports decided there should be no Boxing Day fixtures. Broadcasters select matches within the rights framework, but the League’s calendar determines when fixtures can feasibly be played.

Sky Sports and TNT Sports were the UK live Premier League rights holders for 2025/26. BBC Sport held highlights rights, not live UK coverage of these Premier League matches.
Did the Saturday 3pm blackout cause it?
No. The Saturday 3pm blackout was not the direct reason for the reduced Boxing Day programme.
In the UK, live television coverage is traditionally restricted for matches played between 2:45pm and 5:15pm on Saturdays. But Boxing Day 2025 was a Friday, so the blackout did not explain why only one Premier League game was scheduled on 26 December.
The blackout could affect whether a different festive fixture played on a Saturday afternoon was shown live in the UK. It did not determine how many Premier League matches were played on Friday 26 December.
Why was Manchester United v Newcastle the Boxing Day match?
Manchester United v Newcastle was the fixture retained on Boxing Day. The Premier League’s published explanation confirms the match and its kick-off time, but does not give a special reason why those two clubs were selected instead of another fixture.
It is therefore safest not to claim that the match was chosen because of audience size, commercial value or supporter demand. The official explanation concerns the overall calendar and recovery requirements, not a separate Boxing Day rationale for Manchester United and Newcastle.
Why did the change not affect the EFL?
The EFL is a separate competition structure from the Premier League, with its own calendar and broadcasting arrangements. The Premier League’s reduced Boxing Day programme did not require the Championship, League One or League Two to abandon their own schedules.
The EFL’s agreement with Sky Sports included live coverage of bank-holiday fixtures, including Boxing Day. That is why EFL football could continue even though the Premier League had only one match on 26 December.
The EFL also directed non-Sky subscribers towards a NOW Sports Membership for live EFL coverage during the festive period. Availability can depend on the specific competition, territory and package, so “the EFL is on TV” should not be interpreted as every match being available in every country or on every service.

The EFL’s published information on bank-holiday broadcast selections confirms that its arrangements were distinct from the Premier League’s fixture problem.
Where could UK viewers watch the football?
- Premier League: Manchester United v Newcastle was listed for Sky Sports.
- EFL: Selected Boxing Day fixtures were covered through Sky Sports and related Sky Sports+ arrangements, with NOW Sports available as an access route for eligible viewers.
- BBC Sport: Premier League highlights were available, but BBC Sport did not provide live UK Premier League match coverage.
For international viewers, broadcasters and availability varied by territory. There is no single global Premier League subscription that provides every individual match everywhere.
For a specific fixture, check the official listing first. Buying TNT Sports solely for Manchester United v Newcastle would not have been the appropriate choice because that match was listed for Sky Sports.
Was this a permanent end to Boxing Day Premier League football?
No. The Premier League said more matches would be possible on Boxing Day in the following season because 26 December 2026 falls on a Saturday.
That does not guarantee a complete traditional programme, nor does it mean every Premier League match will be played on Boxing Day. The date simply gives the calendar more scope for a larger fixture list. The exact schedule and television selections must be checked separately.

What was the real reason?
The simplest accurate answer is that the Premier League’s 2025 Boxing Day programme was a consequence of a crowded modern football calendar. Expanded European competitions and domestic-calendar changes left fewer available weekends, while the League sought to preserve at least 60 hours between matches.
Television affected the placement and kick-off times, but it was not the underlying reason there was only one Premier League fixture on Friday 26 December. The EFL was able to maintain Boxing Day football because it had a separate competition calendar and separate Sky Sports broadcasting arrangements.
